I've not had a TV licence for 11 years, but I don't watch TV or iPlayer, and I don't have a subscription to any live streaming channels. I get sent an email every couple of years asking if anything has changed. I say 'no' and they say 'OK'. I feel a bit guilty, though, as I have BBC Radio 3 and 4 on pretty much all the time I'm at home and the 'TV' licence helps to pay for that, too. I did ask if I could pay for a radio licence instead, but they don't do one anymore.

Perhaps your area hasn't been upgraded yet. Once it has, you should be able to get fibre from the telegraph pole in the same way that your copper does currently. (That was another reason I was loathe to have it installed. My house had just been retro-fitted with external insulation and rendered and it looked amazing. Now it has two small dents where the ladder was pressed against it, a dirty smear further down and a thick black fibre cable running down it.)

Plusnet offered had really good deal to renew my copper broadband, last year, but when I applied it wasn't available. When I called customer services, they told me that they couldn't set up a new contract for copper as fibre was now available in my area. It was only a couple of £ more for the cheapest fibre option, but I begrudge paying it as I hardly use it.

Thanks, all, for your comments. I was in a bit of a hurry, when I posted, and forgot to include some important details. Firstly, the email address would be accessed by multiple people, both inside and outside the organisation, and I had been asked to provide the password to all of them. Secondly, the address was required to go live almost immediately, so I wouldn't have had time to set up address book policies (although that is something I would like to configure at some point). Thirdly... I can't remember the third thing! Either way, everyone is happy with the solution I have implemented. I added the external user as a guest in AAD, created an M365 group and included them as a member along with SLT. This way, emails are still sent to a school address and each member of the group receives a copy. I've also set up a mail flow rule that adds a prefix to any message sent to the group address to make them easily identifiable.

I've been asked to set up a school email address and give the password to a consultant from an external company. I'm really not comfortable with this and am going to create a M365 group and invite the external user so that emails sent to the school address will also be sent to them. However, this means that if they reply, the email will come from their own company address. From a Data Protection/Security point of view, I think I'm going about it the right way. I just wanted to canvass opinion in case I have SLT coming back to me insisting that I just set up a normal username and password. So, am I right? TIA

It's still hot here in Liverpool, but not quite as hot as last week - and there's also quite a strong breeze. We had a torrential downpour with loads of thunder and lightning on Saturday evening with some more rain through the early hours this morning, so it's been really humid for the last couple of days. More thunder forecast for this evening.

The question for me would be, "How much do you value your eyesight?" While it may be (a LOT!) cheaper to send your prescription off to an online retailer, the fact is that they won't know your individual requirements and you may end up with glasses that do you more harm than good. For example, I've just bought a new pair of varifocals from a local independent optician after breaking the arm off an old pair. As well as having a thorough eye-test, after I had chosen the frame, careful measurements were taken so that the optical centre of each lens was in exactly the right position. We also discussed my individual needs to determine the correct type of lens and the position and gradation of each area of the varifocal to give me the best vision possible. Yes, it cost me a few hundred quid, but now I can see everything! I can look straight ahead at my monitor, down at my keyboard, out of the window and it's all crystal clear. Like many things, if we switch to buying glasses online because it's cheaper, then we'll lose these crucial services altogether. Sorry, if that reads like a rant, but 'Won't somebody please think of the opticians!'
