Staff: + So 'Malcolm Reynolds' would become 'mreynolds'. Should there be username collisions (say a 'Michelle Reynolds' existed), we'd disambiguate by adding another letter from the first name in, e.g. 'mireynolds'). Students: + + . So a 'William Riker' in intake year 2013 would become '13rikerw'. Extra letters from the first name are added to disambiguate. This is something of a hold-over from our (soon to be!) old CC3 system. Works perfectly well though, and reduces the chance of username collisions.

I thought the 32 GB limit was just for the free ESXi, not things like vSphere Essentials. Maybe they lifted the limit with 5.1 (what we have).

Out of curiosity, what does this relic of an application actually do?! As for closing the popup window, I'd go for @Steve21's solution of looking for the specific window icon is a good one as long as it's unique. Alternatively, you could check the dialog text for the specific string it displays.

Is your internal domain (e.g. whatever.internal) on the 'Trusted Sites' zone in IE - you can put it there with GP, but I'd try putting it there manually first to test.

Or Gumtree, they're not bad - can get some decent bargains there too from a buyer's perspective.

The 5744 is the interesting one there, that means the DC couldn't register SRV records (1004 is related to Terminal Services licensing, and irrelevant). Not sure what it means diagnostically, not knowing anything about your environment, but have a look at this anyway: SRV Records Cannot Be Registered on a DNS Server

Did anything interesting show up in the Event Log during the period when the server hung?

What client/server OS versions are we talking about? If it's 2008(R2)/2012, have you got 'maintain compatibility with Windows XP/2000' ticked on the redirection policy for any of the OUs?

Just thought I'd document this here in case anyone else comes across this curious glitch in MDT 2012, and to see if anyone has a better solution than the one I've found. We were having problems imaging some new machines - they'd fail with a 'failed to service reboot request 0x80004005' error after applying the OS image and unattend.xml. The task sequence worked fine on other machines, just not these ones. We tried faffing about with drivers, added some different ones and tried again. Yay, it worked! All good, right? Yeah, until we tried imaging another one of the same machines with the same setup and it failed in the original way. What? It didn't make sense. Until I realised that the only thing different about the working machine was that the drive had an existing partition (created by the failed TS). This was also true of the old machines we imaged, as they had a pre-existing OS. A solution is to do the following: When WinPE loads, press F8 to get a command prompt. Run 'diskpart', then the following commands to create and format an NTFS partition. select disk 0 clean create partition primary select partition 1 active format fs=ntfs quick Now restart the computer and run your TS. We found that you have to reboot, you can't just continue with the TS after creating the partition. Not a big issue IMO, as it's very rare that you'll be imaging a completely blank disk, but I thought it worth discussing as it's apparently something of a known issue with MDT 2012.

If I ask for something impossible, tell me so at the start, rather than three weeks in. And just because this actually happened once: + Thou shalt not try to convince me that outdated technology is better than the latest version in order to offload a load of old stuff you have sitting around. This shall earn you a place in the Ninth Circle of Supplier Hell. No, Windows Server 2003 is not 'better hardened against threats' than 2008 R2, nor does it 'work better with Windows XP'. Whut? (2008 R2 was the latest version at the time)

Exactly this. We 'have' Fronter, but it is universally disliked, and almost nobody uses it. We'll probably replace it with a few separate solutions that are best for that individual task (handing in work, online course content, etc.). No solution is any good if the users don't want to use it!

Capaldi could work, although I think he'd fit better as the Master or a Sherlock Holmes-type character than the Doctor. Then again, I believe the bookies and papers were totally wrong about Matt's appointment, so who knows? (hehe... 'Who' knows? Geddit? )

Oldest PC in use currently: RM-branded P4s with 512 MB of RAM. Oldest in use by September: custom-build Core 2s with 4 GB. Oldest server currently in use: RM-brand... thing from 2006 with a single Xeon and 2 GB RAM. Oldest by September: HP DL580 G5s w/quad-core Xeons and 16/32 GB RAM (old, but still powerhouses). Oldest thing we have: Probably an OMR machine from 1984 that I found under a desk. Apparently came as part of the school's first(?) SIMS contract; what really got me was that it's still sealed in packaging!!

Anyone know of any companies that will buy printers? They're in good working order, some with toner - we're standardising our stock to reduce toner costs. We could put them on eBay, but that'll involve a lot of faff, I'd rather they all just go. Thanks in advance.

Could see if the IT teaching department wants to use one as an internal web server for student projects (we have an old PC doing just that) - that spec will be sufficient to run a light Linux flavour w/httpd. Use one as a kiosk-type machine for... something? Hook them all up into a Beowulf cluster and make an (admittedly somewhat wimpy) parallel computing system?

Looking forward to seeing this, giant mecha vs alien... things is always good. That and it seems to have been inspired at least somewhat by Neon Genesis Evangelion, an anime that I absolutely love.

To be honest, now I re-read it all, I'm not sure. There's no reason why it should pose problems if done right (which I have absolutely no doubt it will be) - I suppose I've just seen so many drunken-monkey DB desings that my brain conflated 'one massive database' with 'one massive table' or other WTFs on instinct.

This: good! This: bad! (I think... maybe I'm too used to SIMS, but something about this gives me that 'do not want' feeling. I'm guessing there will be SQL server clustering going on, etc?)
