Schoolsbroadband, speed issues, connectivity?

A timely update there - even just to say non-specifically that there might be an issue - would have avoided posts here. Just sayin' -
Schoolsbroadband, speed issues, connectivity?

I can login to the Netsweeper Portal but have no connection to the Policy Servers, so no Category Lookups or Trace requests. -
Apologies, and I totally agree but it’s not obvious to a certain ISP who whitelists it and a number of ad servers and trackers for everyone by default

After some advice regarding Vimeo being used by a website.
sigma replied to jmcdermott's topic in Educational Software
We have a similar thing. I manage it by having Vimeo as such blocked for pupils so they can’t just go there and watch any old thing, but create an overriding allow rule based on the referrer header of the site that embeds the videos. This only allows the Vimeo videos embedded on the site and to be viewed only embedded in the site. This means that when the site adds or removes videos I don’t have to keep changing my rules and it keeps the filtering setup overhead to a minimum - about half a dozen lines. I do this for a site that embeds YouTube as well. Shout if you want a hand and a pointer to some tools. -
Why would you whitelist Googletagmanager, you do know what it’s for?
-
I only have the domain nytimes.com allowed. The rest is advertinsing and site analytics -sentry.io, googletagmanager and googlesyndication which I have blocked. Other trackers and advertisers don't load when those domains are blocked. Plays normally for me - but I'm, not on a Smoothwall.

Smoothwall and Adult Mixed Content reports

If you are with SBB (Netsweeper), they have whitelisted gstatic.com which includes all the google image search thumbnails. That overides any category or share list blocks you or SBB may have in place, but Local List blocks (however defined) are still effective. Overall it means that it is Googlesafesearch that determines what is seen in image thumbnails in Google searches, though if pupils click on the lnk to go to the site, category and shared list blocks will be fully functional. -
Do you block Youtube for Students?
sigma replied to Driftingashore's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Just to say, and I assume it is true for other filters, not just Netsweeper. You can easily allow embedded videos hosted on any platform such as YouTube or Vimeo, by adding an "allow" for the Referrer Header of the domain of the embedding site. (Sparxmaths, CorbettMaths, etc) without needing to either open up the whole platform or allowing the many video urls individually. (One day, SBB might understand this). -

Having worked for a vendor, however it's packaged to you, somewhere there is the "cost of money", sales commission (on finance part of a leasing deal), as well as the cost of the kit which you will be paying for. This maybe back loaded based of the projected resale value of devices at the end of the lease, or spread into the leasing payments. If you haven't done so, do draw up a full lifetime cost of ownership spreadsheet to compare - purchase, lease and refurb for 3 and 5 years when you know all the numbers, and see where that leaves you. Having said that, leasing can be useful for accounting reasons, but in my experience, it is rarely cheaper. I have seen exceptions though.

I realise BitDefender might not float your boat, but if you've not seen it, this is available for "all" educational establishments: https://swgfl.org.uk/products/security-software/

I had a personal licence once. After it almost bricked my computer after a bad update, I won't touch it with a bargepole.

Not the specific coding obviously, but the analysis skills from those days - all the time. I've never stopped. Things change and move on, they go round in cycles, I've been round enough times. Nothing ever quite fully works, that's what's kept me employed all these years.

Em. I can still write IBM COBOL and JCL, it was my day job in the early 1980’s…back in the days of paper coding sheets and punched cards.

Age inappropriate apps mainly.

That’s going to be a Safeguarding issue for many apps for particular age groups - under 13’s and under 16’s depending.

Smoothwall not allowing Replits to work

Nothing to do with the original problem, but be aware that LOTS of web proxies are hosted on replit. -
School Filtering - Pornography False Postitives.
sigma replied to sigma's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
There's too much in the "Adult Mixed Content" that gets returned by Safe Search to evaluate in complete detail because it fits the pattern of "search for an image of a Coca Cola tin and get an appropriate image returned from a site that also sells alcohol", so it gets an alcohol block, which is an FP in my book, and images that do not match what was searched for. I do check, alcohol, porn, drugs, weapons and web proxies in detail daily, and anything else that is out of the regular pattern that I've not been warned about. During the last year there has been a noticable increase in interest in weapons - guns and knives. Anyway, todays blocks (FP's) for porn are: and -
I was in a similar position with frail elderly parents before they passed. It took my sister and I about a year to clear the house, that was an experience. My sister lives closer and had been keeping the garden tidy. Standard 1930's semi that we grew up in. We had it done up and let it. It was a bit of a project, but we had a new roof put on, lots of new loft insulation, rewired and central heating re-piped throughout, new radiators except for those in the bay windows, new boiler relocated, all windows replaced, the sliding patio doors with bi-folds with one opening as a door, new porch, original door and fittings retained, mostly replastered, some ceilings redone, kitchen and dinning room knocked together, new kitchen and appliances installed, back door bricked up, old kitchen doorway to hall bricked up, loo and bathroom knocked together and new loo, bath basin and separate shower installed, fully tiled and underfloor heating under tiled floor, hot water cylinder and airing cupboard demolished. Downstairs loo and basin installed in what was the pantry. New stair carpet, new flooring etc. New curtains fittings, curtains and blinds - some made by us in fabric we'd like to live with. Original 1930's door handles re-installed as we found them. Outside, new front wall, new block pavers in the front and drive. Rear garden titivated with extra shubs and perennials propagated from my garden. Let (via an agency who manage for us), for the asking price in 2018 and lovely tenants still there. Outlay re-couped.

Assess the trees, especially around the boundary as they can provide shade, privacy and a bit of structure. Sounds like the proposal is to lift the canopy so that they don't take up so much room at ground level.

Have you looked in (system Information) msinfo32.exe /components / problem devices to get the exact details of the missing driver (PNP Device ID)? Have you tried searching on HP using one of the serial numbers of the affected laptops as you probably won't find it just on HP 255 G8 as the range is too big? Have you tried downloading it directly from Intel?

Is that because we've conflated 2 problems in this thread? 1. Not being able to change a password. 2. With 2FA and the authentication app.
-
We have the problem, but no Smoothwall.
