Been through loads, IRM -> GLPI & OCS -> Spiceworks. Gotta say spiceworks is the absolute dogs danglies.
-
Not that you need to learn vim because you already know it, or that you don't think you will ever need to know it ?
-
Which version of Fog you using, I think the new version has this fixed.

Another vote for spiceworks, and this is from one of the developers who used to work on IRM.

Anybody used Phihong or Planet midspans / PoE injectors?

Seems a sensible price for a single port POE injector -

NOOB question : What is the default gateway used for?
budgester replied to kennysarmy's topic in Wired Networks
Basically if a device is trying to connect to a resource, it will see if it is in the same address range, if not, then the IP packet is sent to default gateway address, this will likely be a router or firewall of some sort. Which will then try and forward the IP packet onto a network that does have the IP address that you are looking for. Quite a good animation/movie is here... Warriors of the Net give it a try, it was used on my Open University CCNA course. -
NOOB question : What is the default gateway used for?
budgester replied to kennysarmy's topic in Wired Networks
The default gateway is an address that will allow a device to connect to other IP address outside of it's own network range. This could be to gain access to a website, ftp, ssh, or access to another vlan on your network. -
FOG here as well

Another vote for the Motorola defy here, both me and the girlfriend have one.

With all them pigeons, at least it'll be well fertilised :-) From my own allotment experience, get a plot with a few nasty perenial weeds as possible.

Depends what you want the shed for.... if it's just tools then get some old pallets, a big bag of nails and build a tool box.

Installed SOLUS 3 here, and so far other than a pretty interface I've not managed to get it to do much, only managed to get the client installed on about 4 machines out of 100, and that was more work than installing SIMS manaually.

Gotta agree with what everyone else is saying, most of the time it's not the network that gets swamped it the Disk I/O on the server. And of course there is only one way to find out, and that is to monitor the hell out of your network to find where the bottle necks are.

If your squishing Cat 6 cabling in with power, then your are unlikely to get the correct radii on the corners, effectively making it just expensive cat 5. So probably best not to bother with the extra expense of Cat 6.

Block all scheduled tasks in GPO ?

If the kids can run network sniffing software, change network settings and spoof macs on normal classroom PC's I'd still say you have bigger problems than unfiltered internet access. And if the kids are bringing there own laptops in, then the chances are they probably have a smart phone or mobile dongle, that will give them unfiltered internet access anyway.

Seriously in a secondary school,if someone.. A. has the time to do this B. has the skills to do this C. has the access to the network to do this D. Can be bothered to do this E. Manages to do this. Then... A. Why aren't they doing there own job ? B. Employ them as an IT tech pretty damn sharpish. C. There are probably more things to worry about on your network than unfiltered internet access.

Arcam Alpha 7 Amp Michell transcriptor hydraulic reference turntable - As seen on a clockwork orange. Replacing speakers at the moment. Also worked in a HiFi shop for 2 years back when I was in my early twenties.

Depends how you network is set up. But couldn't you just use a different default gateway for your laptop ? I.e Rest of the school default gateway = LEA Broadband Router IP settings Allocated by DHCP. You laptop default gateway = belkin router. IP static and manually entered into your laptop.

Yup, check the bind user/password. Had an issue with this when we updated all our admin passwords, and forget to change it in the moodle config.

Ok, when I set my terminal server up I bought a copy of Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services Resource Kit , this really helped, talks you through setting up the server and other consideration, I have my terminal server in a seperate OU, with some specific Group Policies applied. This give a good overview on how loopback policy works and how to implement it, which in my opinion is pretty critical for a terminal server. Getting it working well is non trivial in my experience.

So what IP address would you give it ? If you give it one from the curric network then the admin network would need to know how to route to it.

Future proofing/ improving our network
budgester replied to networkingNut's topic in Wireless Networks
What problems are you trying to overcome ? Are some of the switches overloaded ? Where are your bottle necks ? Is it network fabric or server hardware. What do you want to achieve ? Will it provide a better service ?
