Hi, I have just installed Karoshi on a test machine and it all looks good. A couple of questions, does it have any way of automating the Windows client installs ? Maybe unnattended or something similar. How about package installation on windows clients wpkg The online documentation is a bit scarce so any pointers would be good. Regards Budgester.

If the switch hasn't had a manual IP address allocated, it will normally pick on up via DHCP.

Try the 60 day trial HP Network Manager software plus. Software Summary B.02.20 - HP ProCurve Networking Then let it drop back to the basic version of the software. If you have more that a couple of HP switches it is worth investing in the full Plus version of the software. Regards Budgester

So I can understand what you propose can you confirm: You store the host images stored on the SAN. On the virtualisation host you mount the SAN and run the image. And could the virtual servers also point to another storage area on the SAN e.g. user areas. I'm assuming something like iSCSI for the SAN ? Regards Budgester

Yup prefer horseshow here as well. If the horseshoe is "U" shaped when "W" shaped also works. [ ] [_][_] Anthing else truly is a pain in the backside and will cause agro, not only with teaching but cabling as well. Regards Budgester

You could use Dokan And mount a directory over ssh onto your windows machine.

Helpdesk Call Monitor or something alike
budgester replied to EduTech's topic in How do you do....it?
IRM has an alert page, that does exactly what you want. So I would suggest having a look at the code there and seeing if you can port it as a module to GLPI. Failing that GLPI is Open Source, you could always contribute back. -

Programatic data extraction from SIMS.net Data Base
budgester replied to NetworkGeezer's topic in MIS Systems
Please don't say this, I am moving from a CMIS school to a SIMS school in a month, and I was hoping the SIMS database might have been a bit better written than the CMIS one, in fact I didn't think you could get much worse. -
Virtualize Terminal Server
budgester replied to techie08's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
So for the virtualisation to work well, you need to have a 64bit base OS, with 32bit guest OSs, otherwise you will still run into the same memory issues. And what is it that you can't do on a 64bit os that you can on 32bit. And if you had a 64bit server why wouldn't you want to run the thin clients on 64bit if you could. And surely then its gotta be easier to run 1 physical server that can manage all the clients rather than a VM server with 2 guests. Plus you've got the network bandwidth to take into account. I could understand if you had Two host servers each with a guest TS, then if one failed you could transfer the guest to the other host while you are waiting for replacement hardware. -
Gotta ask, if your running all this free software stack why you don't go the whole hog and install it on *nix box. I mean if you can manage to install Apache, PHP, MySQL and moodle, then surely you've got the skills to install a debian box.

Virtualize Terminal Server
budgester replied to techie08's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Hold on I don't get this at all. How many clients can you get on a Terminal Server ? is there a limit ? Lets say you can get 30 clients on your current Terminal Servers, and you have 3 terminal servers. Now you want to virtualise all three of them Terminal Servers so you go out and buy a BIG server. You now have a server that can either run 1 Terminal Server OS Terminal services for 90 clients. or 1 Host OS Virtualisation Software 3 * Terminal Server OS Terminal services for 90 clients Unless you are using ESX to migrate the virtualised servers to under utilized hardware on a dynamic basis then you are taking a performance hit straight away. -
Fronter is irritating me already
budgester replied to GenieNitro's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
First thing to check, is how much you are paying for it now, and how much will it cost in the future. Then look at other VLE's it may be a case that you are being subsidised for Fronter for the first year but will have to pay for it after that. Then you can take them figures and look at a hosted solution of another VLE is you want to. http://www.pteppic.net/course/view.php?id=2 How much integration has been done with your MIS ? We are a london secondary school that has foregone Fronter and is using moodle. -
Admin and CC3 netowrk on 1 machine.

Or you could be on a VLAN with routing to both networks. Either way your gonna have to make sure that you are not routing unwanted traffic between the networks. -
Are they using a particular PHP package ? Drupal, Wordpress ? MYSQL and PHP on a windows server with IIS ? Thats a recipe for a PITA to start with.

Just when you think it's all going to plan . . .

Is there a reason for getting rid of RM at the moment ? Have you had RM in for a quote ? Thats your first step. 3 days down time, I'm sure ripping and replacing with vanilla is gonna take you a hell of a lot longer than 3 days. Get your rolling replacement plan sorted, that will actually allow the people with the money to budget correctly, and give you the money you need. Good plan but have you let Senior Management know that this is what you are planning, and have you documented how you would likely go about it. I notice you say you are only renewing existing workstations, there is no mention of expansion. I.e. once you have X amount of workstations/users you will need X amount of storage. Also will the network infrastructure hold up with all new machines running at 100mb if you have a lot of old kit running at 10. Here is a lesson for you right here, you wanted to do some work so you asked for the correct amount of money, in the past people have always been told to go away and do it cheaper (we haven't got the money) so over budget then you might actually get the money you want, or if it's over a certain amount then you are probably required to get 3 quotes, if they are all within 10% of each other then it becomes fairly obvious your not trying to get money for the sake of it. Your basic 5 year plan might look something as simple as below if you have 200 PC's and 4 servers. Year 1 50 PC's * £400 = £20000 1 Server * £5000 = £5000 Licenses £10000 = £10000 (MS, MIS, Software etc) Consumables = £2000 (Printing) Maintainence = £2000 (Mice, keyboards, dead HDs) Total = £39000 Year 2 50 PC's * £400 = £20000 1 Server * £5000 = £5000 Licenses £10000 = £10000 (MS, MIS, Software etc) Consumables = £2000 (Printing) Maintainence = £2000 (Mice, keyboards, dead HDs) Total = £39000 Year 3 50 PC's * £400 = £20000 1 Server * £5000 = £5000 Licenses £10000 = £10000 (MS, MIS, Software etc) Consumables = £2000 (Printing) Maintainence = £2000 (Mice, keyboards, dead HDs) Total = £39000 Year 4 50 PC's * £400 = £20000 1 Server * £5000 = £5000 Licenses £10000 = £10000 (MS, MIS, Software etc) Consumables = £2000 (Printing) Maintainence = £2000 (Mice, keyboards, dead HDs) Total = £39000 So thats a bare minimum of £40K a year just to keep you network running. Now if you said £20000 per year for special projects, e.g. whiteboard and projector rollout, network infrastructure upgrade, new ICT suite, laptop trolley replacement, you are looking a figure of £60000 a year. The bursar/school business manager is used budgeting these figures on a yearly basis (this is probably the cost of an Assistant Head) so if they now know they will need to budget £60000 a year for ICT every year and they have the documentation to prove it to governers and the head it is far more likely that you are gonna get your money every year, and it won't seem like you are going cap in hand for £500 every week just to keep a knackered old network just about running. Oh, and see where you are on the FITS framework. You are the network manager, you need to manage it and not firefight. -

budgester replied to maniac's topic in Wireless Networks
How do this all fit in with your existing 5 year rolling replacement plan ? You do have one don't you ? As you want to replace all of this in one year, it is likely to have an impact in 5/10/15 years. Why not have a rolling plan of one or two servers a year to spread the capital investment and allow the business manager/ SLT to see good planning. I would image they are seeing 55k and he'll probably want to same next year for something else like switches or projectors. -
That would be if he decided to go Gentoo everywhere then ?

Unless it's during the holidays, someone stays with them at all times. If they have a CRB check, then they can go round the school on their own. It's not worth the risk of for them or us, if a student accuses them of something or even if a student tries to nick their tools.
