We have 6 Panasonic copiers connected for printing, a print room, and a stackload of other printers around the building. A load of our printers are managed with CUPS on Ubuntu. The bursar wants to be able to bill by department for printing costs for the print room and the copiers. I'm looking at Pcounter and linking it in with our Mifare RFID cards, I want simple management. Any one got any good ideas on the best way to do this ?

This really sounds like you have another DHCP server on your network that you don't know about. Could something connecting wirelessly have it own DHCP server ? Have you tried wireshark ? Run wireshark and do a DHCP relase and renew on a workstation, then see which IP addresses are offering up IP addresses.

I do a presentation to SLT once a year on what we've done and what we are planning, and any issues we are up against. This presentation is then given to governors about a month later. I go to the Head of Faculty Meeting once a week, this allows me to listen to the challenges facing the teachers and if appropriate make suggestions on how technology may help. After the first week of general IT bashing it settled down to actual constructive discussion.

Debian all the way. We are monitoring all the PC's in the building. I am working on a script/plugin at the moment that sends a WOL packet if a classrom PC get turned off. It will only report to me if the machine is down for more than 15 minutes. This should hopefully allow me to identify unplugged/failed PC's relatively quickly, as the teachers never seem to report them.

Debian, Apache, MySQL and PHP. It makes sense.

Runnig debian VM with 128mb ram for a basic webserver

Another vote for Zimbra here, moved our old linux/exim/cyrus/squirrelmail to zimbra at easter and the teaching staff love it. Also authenticates against our AD as well.

We use a splicecom system, really quite good, and you don't have to invest in VOIP phones. maximiser - Unifying Voice, IP TV, Video & IT Applications
-
Or you could try Zimbra, it's got an Outlook plugin IIRC

The power of open source will eventually roll straight over this outfit unless they get a clue very quickly.

The one thing that really bugs me with building clients is why can't they get it to build using PXE ? I've used unattened.sourceforge.net to build machines with a boot usb/floopy/cd, so it's not difficult.

We are going with EasyTrace this summer. The ID cards will be used for cashless catering, as well as library and access control. Plan in the future will be to use these for: Computer Logon. Registration. Pull based print control Copier control. Car park access. Mass privacy invasion - didn't really mean that one. Some point on the future mobile phones will have RFID in them, then the kids will have to have there phones on them.

Thanks for that. We had a server fail on wednesday, and have been recommisioning the services since then.

Planning it for the next financial year.

We use Unattended, A Windows deployment system: Welcome

We are going to be implementing this module during the summer.

When do you create a ticket for tracking an issue?

Yup, everything gets ticketed, well except for posts on edugeek. Our exams officer doubles up as our helpdesk, not technical but she can change passwords. -
View source is a wonderful thing. o Content Management System is Website Baker o The template is a modified "andreas02" o Web server is Apache2/Linux running on Dual-PIII at the school o Please direct comments/feedback etc. to *** o Most of the site should validate against the W3C for XHTML and CSS

You could try If you currently use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 then you will only get 255 addresses, if you change the subnet to 255.255.252.0 then you will get 192.168.0.0 -> 192.168.3.255 That'd give you 1022 address' The broadcast address will be 192.168.3.255 with a network address of 192.168.0.0 Hope this helps

Have a look at The SchoolTool Project — The SchoolTool Project

Go with Mythbuntu. Real easy setup. I have one setup at school here, I am looking to roll out the MythPLayer on the desktops in the next couple of weeks. Then teachers can schedule there own recordings. Muwhahahaha.

Oh no, that'd be hiding something.
-
If you've got nothing to hide, I'll expect you to be be walking around naked at the BETT show :-)
-
Just watch out for bandwidth flooding, with broadcast packets. And make sure you have a reliable switched network and no hubs.

Imperium - Ideas & help?
budgester replied to stratisphere's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Get it up into some sort of version control repository e.g. svn, cvs, bzr. Any one who can manage to download the source using version control should know that it is generally development code. However before putting stuff up I would decide on the license, what restrictions if any do you want to put on it. If your going down the open source route pick a fairly well known license, see the OSI website, however most people think GPL when they hear open source. Then wait for RM/Viglen/AN Other company to pick up you software and employ you as a consultant on megabucks :-)
