Is anyone here doing this? If so, are there any special considerations you've noticed? I'm running into an issue where the object at the base DN cannot be found even though the test connection to the LDAP server works. Thoughts?

X2 We have that same issue on our network due to a .local domain and we are not yet at a point where we can rebuild.

We currently filter our student devices both on and off campus and require students to use their LDAP credentials to be assigned the correct filter set. Of course, when students move from class to class, they often change IP addresses and are required to re-authenticate. Are there any drawbacks or land mines associated with using the radius server on the Lightspeed appliance?

For email addresses we use graduation year as part of the address. You could use "class of 20xx" as your email group names and never have to change them.

Why use a split delivery system instead of just using the migration tool and moving your staff to GAFE?

Talk to me a little about the issues involved in having a .local domain other than the lag time with logging on with Macs due to the mDNS issues. Seems our IT services provider doesn't think it's a big deal. I understand some of the issues but articulating them is another matter.

Only if the device is deployed using DEP.

Put it in a bag and stick it in the freezer overnight. Pull it out and immediately plug it in. If it works, immediately retrieve all data. If it does not, you'll need a third party.

Gotta disagree here, seawolf. Windows Phone market share is almost 12% in the UK and growing in most other markets. For the real skinny look here. There was no need to exclude any phone with an awesome camera that could be considered an iPhone competitor other than "fanboy-ism". That said, my Lumia 920 does take better pictures overall than my iPhone 5 which was released around the same time.

Use configurator to supervise and apply an image along with the MDM profile. Then use Lightspeed to assign to groups. I don't know how the current setup on 7.1 works, as I'm just now testing it myself, but this is how we've done it in the past.

We actually had an opposite situation at our school where we are 1-1 Mac. A coworker said we needed 15 Windows desktop computers to run our engineering academy software (Autodesk Inventor) as well as a switch and cables to outfit the room. This would have cost in the neighborhood of $15K. I simply suggested charging the students $100 a year over three years and bought them MacBook Pro's with 8GB of RAM and a BootCamp partition. Problem solved for no extra money (we already had licenses for Windows 7 installations). The co-worker wanted to go fisticuffs, LOL. I told him he could talk to my boss, and that was the end of it.

Two years ago, we began a move from a fragmented, Windows-based environment to an Apple environment. During that move, our former server died and we were forced to purchase a new server on which the old setup was simply migrated. The network was kept as a .local domain. Yes, I hear your groaning and will address this as our login process with our Macs is glacial and unreliable We currently run two Windows domain controllers that are virtualized on a single server. One of those runs Exchange, DHCP and DNS, while the other runs file and printer sharing, AD and DNS. All teachers and students as well as most staff members have migrated to Apple computers, and those that need Windows, run Parallels. Only the business manager and her assistant as well as the school nurse run PC’s. Most of the faculty and staff Macs are bound to AD with plans to bind all of them this summer, as we are eliminating the use of local accounts altogether. On the Apple side, we run a single Mac Mini Server with 16 GB of RAM. This device also runs profile manager for approximately 400 devices and hosts our Open Directory against which our students authenticate to a Lightspeed Bottle Rocket. I run a small WebDAV folder for student books off this server as well. Student devices all have local accounts. We have the Mac Mini set up in a magic triangle and most devices are bound to the open directory as well. Our faculty and staff members are embedded in OD groups so their devices can receive settings from WGM. I know Apple, in favor of PM, is demoting WGM, so it is not a permanent solution. We are definitely eying Casper Suite in the next year or so in order to manage devices, so we will reduce the load on that server quite a bit. In the interests of cost savings, I am pushing to have the school drop our Exchange server in favor of Google Apps, which, from my experience, works a bit more seamlessly with Apple Devices. This would save us $10K/year in licensing and SLA fees alone. Questions: If we do this, would we need to destroy everything and rebuild our AD or would we be OK to rename our domain using our FQDN since we no longer have to worry about the Exchange server? Also, we are moving from a .com to a .org domain, so I’m curious as to if any of you have migrated to Google apps and have experience redirecting mail from one domain to the next. I have another Mac Mini server that is used as our configurator. I’m considering using it for an OD replica, as it is in a static location and is unused otherwise. Is this possible or even a good idea? I’m hoping this thread will give me some other ideas so feel free to ask questions and give advice. I can’t guarantee I’ll heed it, or even listen to it, but given that I’m pretty much a network newb, experienced voices are welcome.

Proactive measures are key. Convincing your admin to encourage teachers to go paperless is one way to knock down costs quite a bit. I hounded our curriculum director and academic support staff to no end, but until the head of school stepped in and said "we will conserve resources", it was much adieu about nothing. We've also convinced our admin to allow us to offload printer ink from the the tech budget for next year to provide a little "extra" motivation. We're probably going open source on directory, DNS, DHCP and file sharing as we are FINALLY ditching our exchange server for Google Apps for faculty and eliminating licensing for locally installed Office software. We will likely go Office 365 for Education for staff members that need it. That's $10k+ in SLA and licensing. We utilize open source for imaging and deployment. I am a huge proponent of gifts and donations, but make sure they go toward your long term goals. (E.g. Donating paper is only prolonging the print issue if you're going paperless)

App availability is overrated at this point, IMHO. However, I have a feeling that if MS buys Xamarin, app availability will no longer be a negative perception or reality.

Given my 920 has an outstanding track record as my personal smartphone and an awesome camera to boot, I could see the 1020 with its similar form factor and even better camera being an outstanding choice for you.

It actually is a proxy. One of our students didn't get a filtering policy the other day and was using it to search "suck my $:%#" in Spanish.
