It's unfortunate that you've had bad luck with your device because it's clearly given you a negative view of the whole OS. Many Nexus 7 owners are extremely happy with their purchase and lets not forget that it costs a lot less than an iPad mini. I bought my N7 for £179 for 32GB. Compare that to the £269 for 16GB iPad mini. Unless prices have changed recently. It's not the best that Google can do with its own hardware, but it is probably the best they can do for that price point. You don't have to have an active wallpaper but the option is there for those that do. You don't even have to have icons on the homescreen if you prefer to use widgets. I have a Win 7 laptop, an iPhone and a Nexus 7 so I'm not a fanboy of any platform- they all have pros and cons. But it sounds like you've made up your mind so just take the N7 back and get something else. Life is too short.

Ah, well I think that's down to Facebook, rather than Google. The iPhone Facebook app has adverts in the timeline now aswell, and loads of free apps have the 'iAds', so Apple isn't exactly perfect either, as much as they'd like us to believe. Regarding your charging issues- I'd still return it if it's playing up. I've not had any issues with charging at all. And as X-13 said above- Rooting doesn't void warranty and it's dead simple to revert back to factory settings if you need to return it to store.

Hi, Yeah I updated to the latest version within half an hour of turning it on for the first time. The battery was already half charged so I just used it for a few hours till it died and then charged it up fully before using it again. If you had to turn settings off just to allow you to charge it, it sounds like a major fault and you should return it. I don't think it's full of ads at all, but that might be because I've rooted mine and installed AdAway and Adblock Plus.

Hope you don't mind me adding another question to this thread- What happens if I purchase 16 iPads- 15 to be used by the pupils (shared around the school on a rota basis) and 1 for the teacher of whichever class is using them. I'd like to use one iTunes account to sync the same apps/settings to all of them, but I might also want the teacher one to have some extra apps. But how is this possible unless I use a different iTunes account for the teacher? Because when I plug them all in to charge 'n' sync, they'll all be made identical again. However, if I've bought a bunch of apps for the pupil ones, I don't want to have to buy the same ones again with the teacher iTunes account. Hope that makes sense!

I agree with FragglePete. Got one for Christmas myself and I'm impressed with it. I've had an iPhone for a long time and did have my heart set on an iPad mini but couldn't justify the extra money for something that does less, quite frankly.

If you'd like to keep some separation between accounts then just use the mail app for your work email and the gmail app for your personal stuff, no?

The sad thing is that a lot of people will blindly walk into CW and buy it at that inflated price!

Aswell as the above, the copied iPod has restrictions set to off, whereas the original had them enabled. For some reason, restoring from backup did not copy this across.

Hello, I've currently got 2 iPod Touches (with probably more on the way soon) and I'm just trying to get them set up identically. I thought I'd be able to set one up exactly how I want it, back it up with iTunes and then plug the other one in and restore from that backup. Unfortunately it hasn't quite worked... - The 'original' one has 3.9GB available, the copied one has 4.0GB available - The original had FaceTime disabled (and not visible on any homescreen), but the copy has FaceTime on the first homescreen. - Some of the Wifi settings were copied across but not the password - The email has also lost it's password in the copied device - The wallpaper was transferred ok, and it looks like all of the apps are there in the correct folders, but because FaceTime has appeared on the first homescreen, it's pushed the folders that should be on the second screen onto the third screen! - The Safari homepage has copied across nicely though Apart from that, the devices are identical! Way to go iTunes! Anyone else had this problem? I guess the iPhone Configuration Utility or Apple Configurator should be used to backup and restore instead of just iTunes? James.

It is all terribly confusing. Everyone is saying different things. Some say use Apple Configurator, some say use iPhone Configurator (stupid name when it does iPads and iPods too, but I guess that's why they came out with Apple Configurator), some say use Meraki, some say don't use Meraki because it's awkward to get working properly (I'm on SWGfL like a few others on this forum). Another 'problem' is that a lot of schools are setting up iPads as 1:1 and essentially loaning out iPads to students for the whole year and then writing articles about how they set everything up. But that's not really helpful for those that just have 15 or 20 devices that get shared around the whole school like we intend to do. Then there's the bug with the volume licensing which someone else has just created a thread about, whereby an error is shown if more than 20 copies of a paid app is purchased. I've not experienced this first hand because I'm yet to buy anything from the VPP but it's not something I'm looking forward to. Clearly not everything that Apple creates "just works" or is as easy to setup and use as they'd like to believe. EDIT: Also just read that using Apple Configurator (which can only be used on a single machine), the 'supervised' iPads cannot be recognised by any other computer so you can't copy photos or videos off without it being hooked up to the original computer. I guess you have to email from the device or put everything into Dropbox?

Thanks. Yeah I've applied for volume licensing and we've been accepted but I haven't used it to buy anything yet. The thing which has confused me slightly is reading this- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5188 Under the 'Purchasing VPP Apps' section it says: "Use an Apple ID that is not the ID of the VPP program facilitator or designated purchaser to log into the iTunes Store." I don't understand why you use a different Apple ID to the one you've registered through the volume license programme??

Hi, Sorry to hijack the thread. Like the original poster, I'll soon be getting a number of iPads at our Primary school and am looking into the best ways to manage them. Been reading through the iOS Education Deployment Guide and there's no mention of the Apple Configurator, but I guess it could have been written before March 2012 (I believe the program was released then). Am I right in thinking that the Configurator is an improved version of the iPhone Configuration Utility? (I know it's not PC compatible like the iPhone one). There's also threads about Meraki and other MDM solutions but I'm not sure that we will need that level of control. Just being able to setup a group of iPads (to all be identical), send a selection of apps to them and set some restrictions will be good enough I think. James.

Hi SimpleSi, We don't have iPads but our Touches work with the app store when connected to the school proxy connection. I can download apps from the device. However, I was having trouble downloading apps from my laptop (connected to the same wifi). I'm having to use Proxomitron to get around the issue that the proxy server is creating.

I see. So does that mean that no students are using the iPads at your school? How are you downloading and syncing apps to those? Are the teachers with the iPads just downloading and syncing whatever apps they like on their own computers? Thanks, James.

Hi kennysarmy, Can I ask what devices you have in school (and how many)? We seem to have shifted away a little bit from my original questions at the start of the thread. There's other threads on the forum about Meraki already but it's nice to hear that Meraki is causing problems for other people too. At the moment we only have 2 iPod Touches but there's plans to get more and at least 15 iPads too in the near future, so I'm trying to plan the best way to manage them before they arrive! Some people are saying that a Mountain Lion Server machine is necessary. Others are saying you just need a macbook (as the Windows version of iTunes doesn't sync to multiple devices?) to act as the app-purchasing machine and hook it up to a charge 'n' sync trolley. Hi jlucas, According to page 19 of the 'iOS 5 Education Deployment Guide', you're able to use purchase order, credit card or PCard. See the quote taken from it below- "Institutions can choose from a variety of methods for purchasing apps, books, and iBooks textbooks. Education users, like all iTunes users, can use credit cards or gift cards to fund individual purchases. To purchase apps and books in volume, education institutions can use the Volume Purchase Program (VPP) and fund purchases via purchase order, credit card, or PCard. If an institution is tax exempt, it is not charged sales tax when purchasing content through VPP. An institution may choose one or more purchasing methods depending on its needs." Having said that, I've not tried it out myself yet so can't help you any further than that. James.

Thanks for the advice. I've seen some posts about Meraki on these forums. A friend of mine who already has a number of iPads at his school has recently tested Meraki but had problems with it. He's up around Sheffield but the location tracker said he was in London. My main query in the post above is to find out about managing iPod Touches AND iPads. Do I just use one iTunes account? Is it easy to control which apps go to the iPad and which ones go to the iPods? And does syncing all devices from one 'master' backup mean that their device names are identical? James.
