I guess you just have to bear in mind if something fails. You then need to know the powershell to retrieve information/fix the issue. Most people are fimilar with the GUI.

I've tried to use the maintenance scheduler to wake the PC out of hours both for feature updates and Windows updates. Laptops are difficult. I'm about 50% there in my environment. Annoyingly the default profile has not migrated properly so I'm having to push out a powershell command for the language settings.

Well either you have SCCM and do a in place upgrade out of hours. For laptops you may need to configure them to go straight to Microsoft for updates if you want the control you have to setup a DP/MP in a DMZ to push out upgrades for internet clients. You could just push out 1607 via WSUS but would need a script to get rid of the apps. You can configure Windows Updates to only allow reboots after business hours. Basically unless your setup for zero touch with all software re-imaging is going to be a pain every 6-8 months even if done via SCCM client. Also user data will need to not be on client PC/laptops.

Upgrade to Windows 10 flash is pushed out via WSUS/Windows update. Or every patch Tuesday Adobe release a new version. Have a test group of PCs then push out to all after a few days if no issue.

I would advise against GPO deployment as it's no longer supported. However you deploy autodesk software it will take a long time. Also installers will reboot PCs if there's a reboot pending. So if you don't have SCCM or want to create an image try pdqdeploy. You'll need 2/3 hours for the installer to complete.

Are your gpp settings user or.computer? Also Windows 10 sets the last used printer as default. Which may be why they keep coming back.

You have to be careful with path lengths with autodesk software. Sometimes you get error 3 because the folder structure in the deployment is so deep.

I think sticking to the CBB release is best. However trying to doing upgrades mid year with reliable WOL out of hours needs to be done slow and steady. LTSB is really for healthcare and power stations not education.
