I think it's a piece of glass that lets you see inside the desk where the computer's innards are located. Just like a window on a normal case.

It looks nice, but it's Lian Li. They don't exactly have a reputation for low-cost goods, even if they're generally very good. Looking at other vendors (as your site doesn't have a price on it without logging in), it's £1600 at OCUK. I can't imagine you're selling it for much less. How many schools are going to swallow that kind of cost? I don't think any of the ones I worked for would have done. I'd also imagine that tempered glass would become a target for the less well behaved students. Are there similar desks which don't cost as much?

I found the novelization of Star Trek movies 2 to 4 in an omnibus in the Kindle store just recently (Link). I've read Wrath of Khan and am about halfway through Search for Spock. These things are nuts and I'm thoroughly enjoying them.

Royal Mint unveils new coin design inspired by King Charles
Norphy replied to 6Foot2's topic in General Chat
I quite like those. Like the article says, it’s nice to see something other than heraldry on the coins. -
Link: New Scottish poppy gets rid of plastic Actually, not such a bad idea. Probably cheaper too.

Updating Applications in Cofiguration Manager
Norphy replied to mitchell1981's topic in O/S Deployment
I'd say that ConfigMgr is flexible enough to say that if you find a method of managing something that works for you, do it like that. That said... I would personally not use a single Application and put in different deployment types for new versions of the app. I can see that being a headache. I've always used Deployment Types to deploy the same version of the app with different options; for example with something like NetSupport I'd have one Deployment Type for computers which need the Teacher Console and another for ones which just need the agent. I would continue what you're doing with creating new Applications for new versions of a piece of software and make sure you use Supersedence rules to make sure that you always deploy the current version. -
On the last one, I managed to nab a 27" monitor. I'm half wondering whether I should get a matching one, assuming the same one is on sale again.

Transaceivers - Original vs Compatible - Thoughts
Norphy replied to maxrebo's topic in How do you do....it?
I swore off compatible transceivers after a firmware update on the switch knocked out half our network because the switch detected the transceivers were third party after the update. It’s a crappy tactic from HPE/Aruba, I won’t deny it, but after that I always used genuines for peace of mind -
There are Dell Latitude 7320 laptops on eBay going for less than £300 from refurb sellers. That’s a lot of laptop for the money.

The other option to consider, maybe, is using Storage Spaces instead of RAID volumes. That way, you could use tiered storage and use a mixture of SSDs and 15k spinning rust

What sort of drives are you using, and how big are they?

Socktober is back! Get your hands on free socks and great prizes!
Norphy replied to VeryPC's topic in Our Advertisers
I kid, I kid In all seriousness, I no longer work in edu but I wouldn't say no to another pair of VeryPC socks. Can I still enter? -
I think SNW is the best of the new Treks, overall. The cast is stellar, they seem to have good chemistry and overall the writing has been good. They're not afraid to be silly (See 'These Old Scientists', 'Subspace Rhapsody') but they have had some powerful dramatic turns too. It's been really good and I hope it continues for a long time. Picard had a very strong Season 3 but even that was marred in places; making the Borg the big bad again was a mistake; they should have stuck with the Dominion. Seasons 1 and 2 were a lot weaker, they had their moments but I don't think I'd bother rewatching them. I liked some of Discovery, but I found the last season a real slog and almost didn't make it through. I love Lower Decks but it's very much for the fans and anyone who isn't versed in the lore won't get the references in it. Prodigy was surprisingly good as well; it's criminal that the second season was prevented from being released on P+ and that the first one was taken off. Favourite trek is still DS9.

More a ‘son joke’ but it was quite funny for a seven year old. Our son was telling us that the teachers were going bowling tomorrow, because they’re striking.

Out of curiosity, what made the 12 mini so bad? My work phone is a 12, apart from the bigger notch and slightly different camera layout, it doesn’t seem significantly worse than my 13.

What, would you rather they were formatted for a Mac, an Amiga or an Archimedes instead?

I suspect the base iPhone 15 only supports USB 2 because it uses the SOC that was in last years iPhone 14 Pro, which was also USB 2. The iPhone 15 Pro has a full 10gbit USB 3.1 controller in it so that will probably propagate down to the base models next year. I'll admit that it's a crummy move from Apple, but at the same time I can't remember the last time I connected my phone to a computer to do any kind of data transfer and a 10gbit connection is only going to help those who are transferring large video files, which makes more sense for the Pro models than it does for the base ones. As for charging standards, those seem to be an utter mess at the best of times and the faster charging speeds in a lot of the Android phones seem to use proprietary standards of their own.

I've got a standard 13 which is coming up for a year old at this point. Got that instead of the 14 as the two are near enough identical, so why bother spending more? I plan to keep it until Apple don't support it with new iOS releases any more, like I did with the 3GS, the 5 and the 7 I had. The USB C ports on the iPhone 15s do conform with USB standards? Yes, the base 15 only has USB 2, which is a bugger if you're transferring large files to and from it, but it still uses a standard USB-C port which connects to USB-C peripherals and chargers.

How to get a list of Workstation OS versions
Norphy replied to maxrebo's topic in How do you do....it?
In PowerShell on a computer or server with the AD management module installed: Get-ADComputer -filter * -properties operatingSystem, operatingSystemVersion | select name, operatingSystem, operatingSystemVersion | export-Csv -noTypeInformation -path .\OS.csv That will do it. You won't get the precise build number that you're on, so you won't get patch level but you'll at least get the OS name and branch. It will dump the results in a CSV file called os.csv in the folder that you're running the command from.- 1 reply

Didn’t someone in an earlier thread say that their vape detectors were triggered by boys spraying deodorant?

First two episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 have appeared on P+ (No longer on Prime... boo) and by crickey the first one is a blinder. Absolutely fantastic.

Latitudes are business machines. They come with more business orientated features like the Dell Command Suite, and frequently come with more ports like ethernet and USB-A. I have two Latitudes sitting on my desk right now, a 5420 and a 5430 and both have two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, an ethernet port, an HDMI port and a headphone jack. They're both compatible with a wide range of docks and other accessories. You can download driver packages for them to integrate into your endpoint management system. They're more robust, come with better warranties and Dell used to guarantee spare part availability and interoperability for a certain amount of years. I don't know if they still do. Inspirons are OK home machines and will function for you in an education setting but if you're managing a lot of computers, you're best going with business lines like Latitude, Thinkpads, Elitebooks or whatever.

Don't get me wrong, Thandiwe Newton is great but why did they replace Julia Sawalha for the voice of Ginger? She doesn't sound right.

I've driven through central London a few times and ended up regretting it every time I did it. It always takes longer than the satnav tells you as traffic is so unpredictable. I concur with the previous advice, drive to a station and get the train the rest of the way. If you're coming from Suffolk, I'm guessing that the A12 or A/M11 would be the route you'd be coming in. If so, Stratford seems like a relatively sensible place to stop as already suggested.
