Explain managed wifi to staff and governors
CyberNerd replied to cooper's topic in Wireless Networks
Compare home wifi (10 devices) to airport wifi: hundreds of devices in close proximity all competing against each other for bandwidth. -
That, or increasing the scope are the best options. The others are workarounds.
-
That might be a bit too short - a DHCP client will attempt to get a new lease after half the time of the lease.
-
To be honest I'm not sure this would work well anyway. We have a guest wifi that re-directs to an SSL page. Every day we have 30-40 connections on it ; and all kids can connect to the main school network. Even if you kick them the operating systems will just re-connect, and issue another DHCP lease - it may make the problem worse.
-
You would have to combine that with a low lease time, even if the Wifi kicks them the DHCP server won't
-
We did this too (but allow all devices). I'm suprised the controller allows them to get a lease, is it a login page re-direct? perhaps you can change your auth methods. Also check the DHCP fail-over as there is a 80:20 split of addresses so it is worth adjusting your scopes.

Training courses for SAN/data connectivity/infrastructure?
CyberNerd replied to howartp's topic in How do you do....it?
A "cheap" way of doing this is to hire a specialist engineer for the day with the agreement that you get to pick their brains. We've done this on a number of occasions: usually the supplier is more than happy to take the money; especially for a new installation. Just make sure you agree it with the engineer before hand. As far as SLT is concerned it's "free" training because the £1000 per day engineer is paid as part of the initial fee. -
[sims] So, is InTouch down for anyone else? (farm3)
CyberNerd replied to pete's topic in MIS Systems
Has anyone seen the Major Incident Report yet ? -
linux.
-
yeah, like I said - it's normal for other operating systems to boot fast. Only windows users seem to find sub-ten sec boot times a "new" thing
-
That's nothing to write home about; a sub £200 Chromebook (linux) will boot in just over half the time. With Windows you just get used to things being slower - even when it's the 'best version yet'
-
As long as it is web based, and operating system independent! A couple of things l'd like: SIMS, obviously a web based interactive whiteboard system similar to realtimeboard, but with downloadable content. ChromiumOS to be PXE bootable. this: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/educational-software/160225-hot-potatoes-bit-old-now.html A web based analytics system that takes syslog details from our proxy servers and correlates web data with grades etc from SIMS. We should do more metadata analysis in schools.

Thanks, that makes perfect sense.

I thought that would apply to Lancasters, hurricanes and Spitfires too - or is it I guess just because it is a much more complicated Jet ?
-
Does anyone know why they can't fly it. I heard that it was because manufacturers wouldn't support it - but there is still an Avro Lancaster flying that is 10 years older - so how does that work ??

You can buy one if you want though, we got one via vidahost.

Moving Staff shares/home drives to Google Drive - Thoughts?
CyberNerd replied to Moog1982's topic in Cloud Services
It's all down to probability. Probability of me or one of the techs screwing up vs Google screwing up. Probability of My DR plan failing vs Google's. Does your DR plan get audited to ISO27001 and SOC2 every year ? Google does. -
Moving Staff shares/home drives to Google Drive - Thoughts?
CyberNerd replied to Moog1982's topic in Cloud Services
It is about as likely as Micsosoft issuing a file system update that corrupts all my data, then issuing another that corrupts all my backups. It Just isn't going to happen: Google would bankrupt themselves. You have put trust in your storage provider, even onsite, that they won't loose your data. Unless you're going to only use open source, and read every single line of code before you do something then we are in exactly the same situation. -
It's not currently available in GAFE, the conversation moved onto Google compute engine, Amazon web services and Azure.
-
Google Compute Engine only stores data in the EU of you tell it to.

Could you expand on this? We have done this with a lot of (not all) staff data and I haven't experienced any of these problems. I know where the data is (clearly I've never "seen" the disks that it is held on), I can access it, I can recover it, I can change permissions. -
We link to a URL for the "corporate" signature - It saves tonnes of paper for when staff over-zealously print. We then let everyone add their own in gmail.

Best avoid playing with people who can't cope with games mentality! If you like Deck building games then star realms is a must: Star Realms | Star Realms Deckbuilding Game For a seriously good but insane game then fluxx - the rules change depending upon the cards https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluxx
