  1. Some of those points are quite dubious: our Clevertouch are 10 point touch, driverless (and work perfectly on chromebooks, linux and osx) and have anti-glare, multiple VGA and HDMI and does freeze screen etc. Perhaps the link is out of date ?
  2. And you do get to keep it super secure and away from the eyes of the NSA
  3. Yes I see it is a very different situation. You should probably not do it. I can see that it clearly wouldn't work for you. It does work for some people though, with minimal expenditure.
  4. Just follow the advice from the government and ICO and you'll be fine. One is comparing a multinational company that gives a contract and model clauses being forced to give information (or being infiltrated) by a government agency, the other is an SQL injection organised by children.
  5. If any government agency wants our data they will get it and there is absolutely nothing you'll be able to do about it. That is why I don't worry.
  6. No I don't trust the US, or the North Koreans. I'm still not worried if the NSA knows about Timmy's Specific Learning Difficulty. The UK government (DfE) has said certain services are OK, and the ICO has said they will not prosecute us anyway. I don't 'like' governmental spying, but I don't think a school has to worry about it much either - esp when we are following government guidelines.
  7. http://static.urbanoalvarez.es/blog/?download=badwords NSFW Will need some adjustment. Best done with beer.
  8. Do you really care if the US authorities see any data though? If they don't get it themselves they will just ask GCHQ, who I am sure will oblige. It's scary from a big brother PoV, but no less so than the rootkits in our phones already /tinfoil.
  9. You probably won't need to increase your line speed, because the bandwidth is tiny - unless you are on the absolute brink already when you'd already be looking for the next upgrade anyway. And if redundancy for internet/comms was at all important you would have a backup line already. If you can't get to this point then you are not putting enough money into the infrastructure vs the number of clients. You should really be arguing for either LESS clients or MORE money because it sounds like it's running on a knife edge.
  10. Not at all, my point was comparing internet usage with creating and storing documents online. It is a tiny amount of bandwidth we didn't even notice the increase over the 'normal' increase of double every 3 yrs - which, given a half decent TCO strategy, you would be budgeting for anyway. I think people are really overestimating the costs of storage online, it does work well and at minimum cost.
  11. True, if you're not planning on having an internet connection. The reality is that the bandwidth/cost for online documents is negligible. When you calculate the TCO it's best to factor in the infrastructure. A 20k/year investment for an internet line capable of allowing online documents is a fraction of the cost of half a million pound investment in 1500 computers !
  12. We have 1200 KS3 and KS4 devices and another 400 for KS5. We've not rolled out 1:1 across the school for year 11 yet so we'll expect another 270 next year. ALL of our documents are online and all students (except yr 11) use laptops (chromebooks) every day in most lessons. We don't have MSOffice in school, all our spreadsheets, presentations and email are cloud based (GAFE) yet we are using fractionally more bandwidth than you. We peak at 120Mb/s for about 10 minutes per day, the rest of it is in the 75-90mb/s bracket. Running in the cloud is LESS bandwidth than most would expect.
  13. Working in the cloud uses LESS bandwidth than transferring large documents to and from servers. It's not really comparable.
  14. Ours just says: I would double check that it's the FQDN certificate. One interesting thing (and I double checked our "user settings", and no cert is deployed there) is that when students bring in their own BYOD chromebook that isn't in the domain management console, the certificate also gets deployed to their user profile, thus if they loginto their own chromebook with a school account they also get the certificates, but don't if they login with a home account. My understanding was that "network settings" should only apply to devices, but we deploy to users too, so it might be worth checking that.
  15. You can deploy the SSL cert via the admin console. It's in devices > network >certificates I see that you say it has these settings, but that is all we did. Check whether it is FQDN
  16. Band steering is a great idea, but in practice what tends to happen is that clients get a poorer 5Ghz signal when a 2.4 Ghz would be more appropriate. It's good in some situations particularly if you have very good 5Ghz coverage. If the coverage isn't guaranteed it can cause more problems. Also consider that in a high density environment you may actually want to use both the 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz channels simultaneously; otherwise it's wasting those antenna/channels.
  17. If you don't have any influence with the cloud app company to setup VPN, then you will have to expose your ldap at some level. At the minimum use ldaps, and only open the ldaps from the ip of the cloud provider.
  18. We did it for 200 staff. The compatibility is actually pretty good, and better than some past migrations between different versions of office. It was 95% hot air about change and very, very few actual difficulties. It has brought about a huge pedagogical change and saved us tens of thousands of pounds.
  19. Named after a quality brand :-) Google classroom might also be a good way to store/mark online.
  20. One Course; owned by co-ordinator. Add the cohort of students. Sections divided into: EPQ Student Toolkit TAUGHT SKILLS Project examples Teachers- Getting started How to be a better student hidden topic for teachers.
  21. I don't see why they need to, Google apps is still miles ahead of Office365. you URL is broken btw.
  22. Our kids tried a DoS attack on one of our servers using some simple code - it was quite simple to track down. I'd be more worried when they start bruteforcing things over the network. How will you know if this happens ? Just wait for SIMS records to be deleted?
  23. I think you may need to use GAM. When we bulk add new staff I run a script to assign calendars, you may be able to update it for groups. Ideally you would read the list of users in the group, rather than CSV. #!/usr/bin/python import os # read a (csv) file which is a list of staff email addresses # Open a file with open("newstaff.csv", "r") as fo: print "Opened: ", fo.name data = [map(str, line.split()) for line in fo] for i in data: email = i[0] email = email.lower() os.system("./gam.py user " + email + " add calendar [email protected] selected true colorindex 1") os.system("./gam.py user " + email + " add calendar [email protected] selected true colorindex 2") os.system("./gam.py user " + email + " add calendar [email protected] selected true colorindex 3") os.system("./gam.py user " + email + " add calendar [email protected] selected true colorindex 4") os.system("./gam.py user " + email + " add calendar [email protected] selected true colorindex 5") os.system("./gam.py user " + email + " add calendar [email protected] selected true colorindex 6") os.system("./gam.py user " + email + " add calendar [email protected] selected true colorindex 7") os.system("./gam.py user " + email + " add calendar [email protected] selected true colorindex 8") fo.close()
