Implementing Chromebooks in Education HE environment
CyberNerd replied to Davit2005's topic in Cloud Services
For more specialised software we are using the HTML5 ica client which connects directly to a windows server and it saves on a mapped drive, but we don't have shared drives anymore as everything can be picked up from google drive. They are Chromebooks, so the files are only synced if the student asks for them to be synced otherwise it is the web interface. -

No I suppose not. I was really commenting about how I was unlikely to sufficiently arm the women incase they became pregnant. Perhaps they should be able to fight, but withdraw when they get to 50% health.

^ that was a while back!

...they won't need it with GAFE. You can route emails to go between either if you want, but it really sounds like you just don't want to . -
I notice the way the women are just as useful as men, except when they are pregnant, where they just seem to run around waving their arms in face of a disaster - leaving the player less reluctant to arm them properly. Not so great to see sexist chauvanism living on in the gaming community.

You can choose to sync with whichever AD attribute you choose. We use the "userPrincipalName". You can also add aliases in the sync too, and a UPN if you wish. -

Yes, they work by syncing with GAFE Yes, the synced accounts are google - but it is a lot easier to do than O365! Network drives are a thing of the past here, we move them to google so they can be accessed anywhere and on any machine. You need third party software, but they comfortably run windows apps via Citrix, or VMWare. There are also a lot of native apps available. -
YouTube for Schools - How do you signup!?!
CyberNerd replied to RichardHam's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
it runs 32bit and is a mere 23mb! Anyway this is all beside the point - I think there is some real misconception about how this works. You can still restrict youtube by changing the DNS as described, all you can't do is allow staff to review and whitelist certain video for students the sites unless they are signed in. Your current content filter will allow you to prevent turning off safe search. -

I'm not really sure what this has to do with your server? -
Log into the browser and it brings your bookmarks with you.

YouTube for Schools - How do you signup!?!
CyberNerd replied to RichardHam's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I will. I think the issue with this is similar to the original problem with youtube, it was a complete shambles: videos were (randomly) being labelled 'inappropriate' to the point where perfectly good teaching resources were not accessible. What's fine for year 12 isn't good for year 2. I think the problem stems from the fact that disaffected students could click a link to report and therefore blacklist resources. I'll certainly feedback your suggestion but I feel that the solution Google have is the best: teachers are given the freedom to whitelist resources that are appropriate to the class. -

you are in the wrong circles. We often feedback to google development teams or the uk edu team. -

I don't really want an Active Directory just so that students can sign into the computers, I'd rather they just authenticate to GAFE directly but sometimes you just have to roll with the easiest solution. You may find that the staff actually prefer GAFE over 365 - most of the research say they will: Google Apps vs. Office 365: Trends in Cloud IT Remember GAFE has many more features and it won't cost you a penny to enrol. -

With Chromebooks / boxes you can also restrict personal accounts from logging in -
Where do you read the majority of your personal email?

Chromebook - but that could be regarded as a tablet (it is) or a laptop (it is as well) -
A small site then!

Download speed not going higher than 30 megabit on Meru Wireless
CyberNerd replied to sheraz35's topic in Wireless Networks
IF there are b/g clients present the speed gets limited, but I think it is only in that area and not on the whole network. There is a thread about it here: https://community.merunetworks.com/merunetworks/topics/802-11b-data-rates I would be inclined to look at the wired speeds between the controller and AP/firewall and make sure that is all working well first. -
Google Drive to Replace Student and Staff Shares
CyberNerd replied to Icangoogle's topic in Cloud Services
just copy the existing shares, delete the originals and then share via Classroom. If you share to "anyone in domain with the link" you don't need to do it on the group level and you can share the link to the document via classroom. -
Google Drive to Replace Student and Staff Shares
CyberNerd replied to Icangoogle's topic in Cloud Services
The beauty is you can let the staff configure it - its that easy. Alternatively you can create a user for each department and then give teachers edit permissions at the folder level. -
yes I did the upgrade. The details are all in the documentation. Ours is on a MC4200 so make sure you read the documentation for the MC3200 Basically (from memory): put 7.07 on a (t)ftp server from the command line on the controller copy from the (t)ftp server to flash Turn off auto upgrade on the AP's Upgrade the controller Upgrade the AP's
