I'm not saying it's pocket money, but I think remuneration for network managers in Grammar/secondary schools, should be on a scale that goes somewhat higher than that. Edit: I realise there is a separate thread regarding NM pay, so sorry for hijacking this one.

Always highly rated their technical support. The few times I've had to call them in the past, they've been helpful and not forced me to go through "The script" with them, when diagnosing faults. Not had to call them for about 3 years though.

A University education should be free for all, but you should have to prove that you have more than 2 brain cells to rub together. Having 5 A* grades proves nowt these days, which is unfair on those that are genuinely intelligent. My dear old mum works in student finance, and you wouldn't believe the amount of people applying for funding, that cannot even read and fill in a form asking for their name and address etc correctly. Perhaps just being able to fill in this form should be the entry requirement. The whole concept of sending 50% of the population to University is ridiculous.

Not so sure about getting it to run when you click on shutdown, but it's easy enough to create a shortcut to the batch file and save it in your start menu. I give it the same icon as shutdown. Might be worth telling it to run a disc cleanup before it runs a defrag too. Just add 'cleanmgr' to the batch file.

Big fan of JKDefrag myself. (Can be found on filehippo if you search) Can be set to run via batch. Seems to do a far better defrag than the windows system defrag. Has plenty of flags to play with too. Can also be set to run as the screensaver, though whether you would want such heavy disc activity so frequently is questionable.

I'd do a spot of googling regarding Seagate and their recent drive problems before handing over your cash.

Rather fond of PING at the moment. Imaged my new netbook with no problems, when Acronis went and cried in the corner. PING is also free. If only I could get it to back up RAID 0.

DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=6 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V or DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V Memory is something I'm not too knowledgeable on. Both are 2GB sticks and the same price and both are fully compatible with my Netbook. I imagine the difference will be completely negligible for my needs, but I might as well get the quicker of the two. Ta peeps

Only ever used APC to be honest, though there are a lot more manufacturers out there now, that seem to offer very good deals. However, people generally by a UPS as they want reliability, so it might be best sticking to what you know, that does the job. I'm sure other edugeekers might be able to recommend some other brands though. Just make sure you get one (or two) that can comfortably take the load required by todays' power hungry beastly servers.

Think 3 years is the average time until replacement so you've done quite well with it. You'll probably find it is cheaper to buy a new one that get a replacement battery. If it's for a system critical server, I'd probably get it replaced. You might still get a bit ore life out of though so I'd keep it for a test server or something less critical.
