Do you have any mapped network drives that are currently not connected? I came across a school recently with a similar sounding issue, and I found a website that states that Office 2003 has problems opening documents when you have mapped network drives that are unreachable. As soon as I removed the mapping, which wasn;t needed anyway, Office opened documents straight away.

Kimi went up in my estimation for doing that. It was clear to everyone that there was no way the race would continue. As another posted pointed out, this race was only put on at this time for advertising money. Take the night time race for instance. One of the drivers, who's name escapes me has criticised them saying it is too dangerous when dark as they can hardly see - the very reason non of them wanted to get back into their cars on Sunday. The race was a damp squib in all aspects.

Couldn't agree with you more regarding the stupid move from Parallel to usb for printers. Have nothing but trouble with USB printers, especially ones that are shared. Parallel just did the job. The HP Laserjet 5MP printer was and still is, a great office printer. They just don't die. Sadly, a lot of modern desktop PCs no longer come with a parallel port, which meant a lot schools I support having to ditch such a printer. Sure you can get parallel to USB converters, but I'm not fully convinced by them.

Admin server which hosts SIMS is also the DNS server. We wondered if the clients might have somehow been going out of the LAN and then back in, but this wasn't the case. It's a strange one that's for sure.

We've had a few reason 0's recently. Usually fixed by recreating connect.ini as someone else mentioned, but this wasn't making a difference this time. The only thing we found that seemed to be a common issue, was that SIMS stopped working as soon as the schools internet went down. As soon as the internet came back up, so did SIMS. I know what you're thinking, there is absolutely no link and you're right. We first thought that perhaps the DNS settings were wrong, but they all checked out. We could fully ping the SIMS servers from the workstations and vice-versa. Happens to be a very strange and frequent co-incidence of late though.

I recently moved from AVG 8 free to Avira. Best decision I've made in some time. Nowhere near as big a resource hog. You might be able to track down a 6 month trial of the premium version, but if you can't the free version is still fantastic and regularly tops the AV lists for detection. Runs fine on my Toshiba NB100 netbook.

I'd run that by Phil Neal and tell him who your LEA is, as I don't think your being given very good advice m1ddy. They are right in that it can affect the SIMS environment, but so can leaving a server unpatched.

Sounds like your LEA are all wearing Tin-Foil hats and suffering from a bout of Paranoia. The only thing I'd hold back on is the latest Service Pack for SQL Express. Edit: I'm sure Phil Neal can advise further.

You could just create a batch file to run a dbattach backup, before your main backup.
