  1. On our Acer's we had to open each one up take out the mini pci card and put sticky tape over certain pins to make it ignore the switch.
  2. You could enable "Loop Back Policy Mode" which in the OU for your Library Computers you set this under Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System. Group Policy, "User Group Policy Loopback Processing Mode" and set it to Replace. What that does it now makes the User Configuration part of the the library policy apply to those machines instead of the normal policys set in the User's OU. So you can lock them down with different settings and of course a different proxy setting. But this would apply to everyone who logs into the library.
  3. Anybody else have issues with this software randomly crashing? Its driving me nuts. I've run regmon and filemon to see if its when it access any particular file or regkey, its not, it crashes if its user or admin, i've tried a few different versions of audio / video drivers, i've tried turning hardware acceleration down, still it does not work. Its installed locally, not a network drive. Tech support are no help, they just say to do what i have already.
  4. Thankyou very much.
  5. Is there somewhere in the registry in Windows XP where you can specifiy a specific folder for XP to look in for drivers when new hardware is plugged in?
  6. Thanks for the answers , i think School Agreement is a no no
  7. I've had a hunt through the School Agreement threads already out there but cannot seem to find the answer i'm after. Hypothetically speaking, if we had 500 netbooks for students, because Microsoft will only allow XP Home to be installed by the makers , we would then have to spend around £30 on a Windows Upgrade Licence so i can install Windows XP Pro , then around the £30 mark again for an Microsoft Office licence, then a few ££ for a Windows Server CAL. Would Microsoft School's agreement work out cheaper over 5 years? I keep seeing on posts on this subject £25-£30 per PC, is this per year, every 3 years?
  8. We gave every teacher a laptop in 2004, but now every room has an Interactive Whiteboard were putting PC's in. Its gets very messy having cables going to laptops, plus ones such as the VGA look like they are not designed to go in and out at least once a day.
  9. Well after trying our current Symatec Corporate 8 on on the little netbook today i promptly put NOD32 back on, the performance hit was noticable with symantec.
  10. Well i've put the home edition 30 day trial of nod32 on this netbook and it seems ok performance wise. Cannot tell its on really which is what i like. I've not tried our current Symantec on it yet will do on monday, but newer vesions have a habbit of getting worse as they add more unwanted gunk. Like AVG 7 use to just work and be fast, now AVG 8 seems really bloated.
  11. Were thinking of giving every student a netbook and saying goodbye to laptop trolleys. I've got a Eee PC 1000H and my friend has the NC10. Cannot decide between them except the Eee PC has a Draft N wireless card, so more channels to play with and more bandwidth. Wish they did the NC10 with a better wireless card, also the NC10 has a Yukon Marvell LAN card, pure evil . I do prefer the mouse pad on the NC10 though.
  12. Thanks for the link, seems NOD32 is the way to go. Anybody have any idea on there educational prices?
  13. For performance which do people think is the best anti virus? I see antivirus as a necessary evil, i hate how most of them kill the performance of Windows, so i'm after opinions on which kills the pc least. We run Symantec Anti Virus Corporate, and have since 2003, its only our latest PC's that we do not notice the AV killing the PC and it would make PIII PC's die. We may be getting some Netbooks soon, and since the speed of these is less, i'm wondering which AV will not kill them. The version of Symantec we have does not support Vista or 7 , so were going to have to change it at some point. What i do like is the way symantec updates silently, which i think is important on managed stations. Any recommendations?
  14. Anybody seen any laptops with the 12" Screen and priced around the £300-£320 price bracket? (Ex VAT) I'm looking for laptops somewhere between a netbook with 9"/10" and a full laptop with 15.4" screen, the ones i find with 12" screen's are stupid prices, like around the £1000 range. There has got to be some out there and i'm being blind...
  15. Have you tried an IE7 User Group Policy Setting, "Prevent performance of first run customize settings" Under Administrative Templates > Internet Explorer ?
  16. I've been a Nokia Symbian Smartphone person since the Nokia 7650 back in 2002, out of the choice you just said, it would be the Nokia N85 for me. But i'm still in love with my Nokia N95, had it direct from Nokia for free before it came out to the market as thankyou from them for being part of the 360 Study (Carphone warehouse were very puzzled when i walked in asking for a memory card, were like where you get that from!!! ), and its the longest i've had a handset to date. So if your after a very stable symbian phone now the N95 although old is not that different from the new models but has the stability advantage. First firmware's on Nokia Symbians tend to be buggy, and because its an older model you should be able to get it cheaper.
  17. I got my bank charges back in 2007 too, all £3400 worth. Did it with the templates off consumeractiongroup's website, after 6 months Lloyds TSB's solicitors wrote to me saying they agree to pay it back and was sitting in bank account. I believe its hard to do now while test cases are being done through courts.
  18. If its for JUST the parent reporting system you want, Insight by TASC Software does a better job than Sims LG at a fraction of the price.
  19. Quackers

    CC4 rebuilds

    Still not PXE Boot build??????
  20. Is he a member on here???
  21. I'll give them another test i have one here that needs to go back under warrenty, (we have over 150 Acer laptops here) lets see if they can fix it first time. I use to like Acer 3-5 years ago as the support worked, now i'm lucky if it gets fixed after the 3rd send back. October last year it took 4 send backs to get a hard disk replaced. They kept saying it was not broken, yet RIS or WDS or the CD would not rebuild the laptop. If i changed the hard disk my self it built fine, but we paid for a 3 year extended warrenty so were not paying for a new disc, faulty one back in and send off They even had the cheek to say on one send back that the computer needed Windows re-installing and wanted to charge us £50. Then there is the laptop thats been back over 14 times and still is not fixed so we just gave up Also the lack of XP drivers for there laptops that come with Vista pre loaded is poor, and there response of "it did not come with XP so why would we put XP drivers for download" is not a good one On the plus side is there a replacement model for the Aspire 5310? I did like those for kids to use as they seemed to take batterings quite well.
  22. I'm still cannot get over that comment...... were never buying Acer's again.
  23. I believe it would have to have Windows Vista Business or XP Pro for you to be able to build them without buying any upgrade licences.
  24. Is this like the Scanner on the Nokia N95?
  25. Get XP, we still install XP on anything that comes in with Vista Business. Need the computer to be usable
