how to add a section that can act as the school diary etc. If you turn on the editing and go to Add Block>calendar you can -er- add a calendar that will function as a school diary. If you put it on the front page you can choose when you add an event to make it global for the whole Moodle.

Are you using 1.9.3? They did a lot of work fixing SCORM in that version.

As an example, I'm logged on as myself to my testing server (which is administrator) and am adding some site news, but as soon as I log on as a pupil it says "No site news added yet". To get this to work you have to set the default front page role to student (site admin>front page>settings

Go to site admin>front page>front page settings and tick add topic section. Then go back to the front page and turn on the editing and you could (just a suggestion) in the topic section you've just made, click on the hand/pen/paper icon and you'll get to an html editor where you could upload and display an image with maybe a description of the school. Other useful tool is to go to add block and select html block which lets you add text/code/images/hyperlinks of your choice. YOu can have a few either side of the main central block. There are other blocks too you could add- just, I wouldn't personally have the 'online users block' as it's similar to a visible stat counter on a website; not so much who's online but who ISN't online Did you mean appearance or were you thinking courses?

Do you have ftp access? Why not just get yourself an new theme - from moodle.org -http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?id=6552 - the Newbury college ones are particularly nice. YOu could take one and customise it. Or maybe you were wanting to design your own?

Ok go to the course you want to put it in and look at at its url and it will have a number (assuming you've already uploaded sth into the course files - if it's empty just upload something at random) It will then generate a numbered folder - according to your moodle set up you'll find the moodle folder with the course files in moodledata (or uploaddata) - there will be folders with numbers - put it in the one of your course. Then when you go back it will be available in the SCORM option

on one of my test ones - works fine as I thought it would - just same as ftp-ing any file/folder into Moodle course page. Mind you , you do need to know the number of the course it is going to go into.

Well since you can upload any other types of files into Moodle, via ftp I don't see why SCORM should be any different - you just upload and then use the SCORM option on the Moodle course page. In fact, come to think of it, it's bound to be fine.

doesn't offer you the options of gradebooks and assignments and self marking tests and voting and all the other interactive stuff etc does it? I mean; I've never set up a joomla site myself but I figured it's more content management than VLE - unless you just wanted your Moodle to be like a website. We are 11-16 - we have categories as subjects and then courses as each year group, then split into classes. I know others do it differently. Ours is online; uploads csv file; have to connect to network then login to Moodle but no big deal as users have same logins anyway.

in site admin go to modules>activities>forum and then enable rss setting Then in the individual forum settings you'll get the option to turn on rss feed for that activity and how many posts going out to rss.

Using Moodle 2nd ed deals with 1.8 which is ok for most things. There's a book published in Sept for Moodle admins here which deals with 1.9 Moodle Administration

I agree with DanIT I really wouldn't advise having your teachers assigned to front page (or even site wide ) roles; you just dont know what bother they might cause! I know it might be a drag to put them in their own area (but you could add them to the category rather than individual courses; that's less of a drag) but at least that way they can't do anything to the front page but have sufficient control of their subject area.

Heavens - I had to check that wasn't me replying above as I could have written almost the same answers. But this is me: 1,In schools that have opted to buy into or use a VLE, can you explain how the rollout was handled and managed. Moodle - chosen and tested by couple of depts in Spring/Summer term and rolled out to whole school Autumn term Did your school buy it because it felt it had to, then try and decide what to do with it? Or did your management put together a coherent development and training plan as well as allocating resources and time to implement it? VLE issues part of bid for Specialist School status- looked at others such as frog but opted for Moodle cos a) it was the best and b) broadband suppliers were offering it. 2. Who has taken ownership of the VLE, is it the technical department, the headteacher, SLT, nobody? I am admin, answering to my linemanager assistant head/head of ICT taking official responsiblity. 3. One of the issues we are aware of if the the time commitment required to transfer existing resources onto it. Do you allow teachers extra time to generate resources? No - they have to do it in their own time but last couple of years I have been given timetabled hours to do this, plus we now have technician whose job it is to help in this way. . Do you feel your VLE is used effectively? Is it value for money, and do you see any improvements in T&L? Yes - transformed T and L (or L and T as it is now ) in our school and brought community into school also. GCSE grades improved too in 3 years we've had it and had online revision resources. Don't experience many problems - try to deal with them on personal ad hoc basis . How have you dealt with the issue of some pupils not having internet or even a computer to access the VLE? Not a major issue at our place but answer is same as Cybernerd's 7. Is the VLE embedded within every subject? We notice some subjects dont translate particularly well, regarding collection and marking of a piece of art work, for example. There is something in every subject; where there isn't much we try to help out - planning on training pupils to help some teachers who are less comfortable with it. But some subjects have more stuff on and some have less. I try to have a focus each half term with a vle development group I have to encourage staff to try out stuff -like different types of assignment and online marking One of the concerns staff have about being able to access work outside of school, is the question of work-life balance. They have already expressed concerns about pupils expecting responses/work related discussions with staff outside of school hours. How have you handled this? Sometimes our staff respond to IMs from pupils after school; sometimes not -there's no obligation to. As for work-life balance, I have no problems on that score at all. I just work and don't have a life....

why do they not have a forum - or are there other sites elsewhere that do that? (just curious; that's all, coming from a Moodle support background)

what package is it? I've noticed that although some companies boast they do SCORM compliant packages sometimes they -er -don't work properly in Moodle.

if you're happy going into Roles and Permissions you could override permissions in the particular course where this forum is and prevent students from starting new discussion topics - I'm copying and pasting the next bit: Overrides Overrides are specific permissions designed to override a role in a specific context, allowing you to "tweak" your permissions as required. For example, if users with the role Student in your course can usually start new discussions in forums, but there is one particular forum for which you want to restrict that capability, then you can set an override that PREVENTS the capability for Students to "Start new discussions". If you want to do it, go to assign roles in the course concerned, click on override permissions and then student and then scroll down to the forums bit.

Try the 'question and answer' type forum. I never use this but my impression is that it's for teachers to pose questions and students to answer.

only spotted this just now and have a feelin I answered this elsewhere in cyberspace? But - if you want your students enrolled just in the courses you want you can: use the course admin block within the course and assign them as students there OR put an enrolment key on the whole course and tell the password to only those students you want to enrol OR put an enrolment key on the course as above AND set up group enrolment keys and tell students what their group enrolment key is - this will put them straight into sets to save you or someone doing it further down the line OR enrol them into groups via csv file My preferred options this year has been the group enrolment key. ps - forget system wide roles - you only need them for admin imho

When you say middle column do you mean the topic section between any left and right side blocks you're using? Which theme is it? I can't see how you'd need to do any coding/touch the files on the server unless you were after editing the theme itself? You should be able just to link to the image you'd uploaded to sitefiles. Go to the image in sitefiles,right click its properties and then copy and paste that into the image url box when you click the image in html editor.That way you don't need to have browsed and located it.
