SIMS is a resource hog full stop . Whenever we've had slow issues they've always told me to run the indexing patches. Our database is getting on for 9GB. Only solution we've really had is testing with SSDs improve things dramatically so generally it's down to workstation performance rather than Server. However, we cannot change things like school dates, terms etc during the school day and this grinds everything to a holt - even though there is minimal use on the server when it's on a dual 6 core server with 24GB RAM SQL usage is minimal.

We don't do it without warning for Staff - we'd always send them an email to say is it OK to remote in to their computer first, but generally we would physically visit the computer unless at our Post 16 site. Generally only use remote monitoring for student PCs without warning and this is in their school planners which is signed to say they will be remotely monitored and mailboxes access at any time deemed necessary. Different for staff - I wouldn't just access the heads PC or user space without authorisation. If that was the case you might as well know users passwords off the top of your head, and only ask them for it if the need arose.

True, however our policy has always been that I am only to go into staff mailboxes with the authority of the Head/SLT. There was an incident where someone wanted access to facebook and was told I couldn't be in the room because of the nature of it and not fit for me to see...

Why would you need to view/control teacher computers without warning? They may have confidential information up on their screen. Hope your covered with policies in place that ALL users may be remotely monitored without warning in that case.

I have several Microsoft Certifications but makes no different to the pay, and not really recognised in my school. However I do it for my own learning purposes which helps me do by Job without requiring additional support from outside companies when do migrations, upgrades and resolving issues. If ever went into Business they would be useful as they advertise the qualifications.

Is there any way to exclude single users from being able to access HAP?

Depending on your site size 60 isn't excessive. We have 65 Access points to get decent coverage and speed across the whole site with the potential for any classroom, even 2 next door to have 30 wireless devices in each room. Majority are still only un-managed G devices for ah-hoc areas but main teaching rooms have Wireless N managed APs. as and when we buy new wireless devices we buy the new APs to go with them to spread cost.

if this is Exchange 2010 check it on the server - if it loads there, it's a permissions issue or problem with the management tools install.

Why was there an issue with Google SSL ? Our LA use netsweeper and saw no issues with google SSL. Also, I was advised by one company that the issue of Google Translate being an open proxy and that is was a known issue with ALL filtering solutions. However, once I discovered our students were doing this, a simple report flagged up the single URL that needed entering to still allow google translate to work but not for website URLs ... why it was a simple fix for me and yet software companies couldn't work it out I do not know!!

D-Link here also. Still run some unmanaged APs on Wireless G, but all the new 'N' AP'S are managed by a wireless management switch.

I always wait a few days when updates are released purely for this reason! same applies to SIMS.net updates, Solus Updates, any updates. Even then I deploy to a few test PCs in the classroom next door to make sure we don't get any major issues before sending out globally.

Our photographers always supply the disc with images by Admission number and the license file, so it's a simple batch import.

I've been looking at these today and the DL180 G6 seems so cheap! Spec'd the same as my tower it's way cheaper and looks like the parts from my ML350 G6 all work with the DL180 G6 Thanks everyone for your advice, was looking for the additional 8 bay cage but couldn't get from anywhere. Does anyone have one of these DL180 G6 servers and able to tell me what the idle/average power consumption is?

If your NVR isn't POE and your connecting the cameras to a POE switch you just need to make sure it has a high enough power rating to run all the cameras. We have 8 x NRV's dotted about the site, of which you can manage them all from a single PC through software on one screen for live viewing and playback - saves on network bandwidth as cameras are connected to the NVR and only time data passes the LAN is when connecting to the NVRs

We've got a Hikvision system that was installed last year both fixed domes and PTZ cameras - excellent image quality and plug and play with NVRs with POE ports.

Currently have an ML350 G6 Server of which all 8 bays are populated with 300GB sas Drives. Been a VERY reliable system with only 1 drive failure in 4 and a half years and no other issues. Was looking to increase the drives to the 600GB version but read reviews online that reliability isn't great - I purchased some drives and the 1st 2 NEW drives I got (from different suppliers) failed within minutes of being in an array so not going down that route as has put me off! Anyone know what the best option would be to expand the storage on this server? It's a home personal server with critical data and looked at either getting a MSA with 2.5" bays in and a raid card , or ditching the server and getting a new GEN with 16 bays. Looking for cheapest option for better capacity storage. Also thought about getting a Microserver and raiding 2 x 2TB WD Enterprise drives with a spare, and using it as an iSCSI target, however they're not hot swappable drives and don't know how reliable the enterprise WD drives are despite having a 5 year warranty. Looking for opinions... thanks.

I used to run my own website and photography site off my own server at home until wanted higher upload bandwidth for clients accessing images. However, I have still used dyndns for years and never once has it let me down as use it still for accessing cctv, email remote access from dynamic ip. I have a server on 24/7 for accessing client photos anyway, so running additional services off it (hyper-v) is of no bother to me. most routers will allow you to set up dyndns rather than needing the client so if your router ever reboots it will update the domain ip instantly.

I have a number of hardware/software devices which have the facility to send email notifications. I have a situation where by when configuring these that the test emails will only send if I use my domain login and password. If it change it to another domain user, I get an error saying the email failed and could not relay. I cannot see why my account should be any different to any others? For example we run PaperCut. For the email notifications it has to use my domain username and password as authentication, as if I change it to any other user or domain admin it doesn't work. Running exchange 2013 if makes any difference but a bit stumped on this one as not aware you can restrict email sending by user, only host IP ?

BT never do seem to remove old cabling. We used to be a central concentrator site for south Lincolnshire when we had 2meg broadband lines. Once schools changed to their own dedicated 100meg link, the kit was removed but we were left with 20 odd fibre cables just bundled up now.

Our Curriculum and admin networks have always been a flat network - providing you have hidden shares or have correct ntfs permissions in place there should be no need for it. Or even use the local server policy to restrict users who can even connect to the server, it makes it pretty secure. Staff and student computers are restricted with us so staff can only log on to teacher pcs, students onto student pcs so that's just another step to keep things secure as SIMS wont be on any student PCs, let along having access to the SIMS/SQL server.

Hello So this afternoon clients started losing connection to exchange, coming up with the error below. Cannot work out why as nothing is changed during business hours. I have 2 exchange servers both with Client access role, not clustered, and its only server -001 that it comes up with the error (the server that the mailboxes are on) If you delete the profile in 'mail' from control panel, and re-run outlook the wizard comes up as normal, find the user and creates the account. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction of what to even look for? It's looking for the local server name , but I set all internal/external urls to external DNS domain, and if there is one particular entry which would cause this, which would it be?
