They purchased the Apple TVs and iPads before I joined the School/Academy nearly two years ago so any suggestions on what 'upcycling' options I have with regards to the Apple TVs we have? The difference is that with Windows 7 you need to have a TPM chip to make use of it. Thanks to this thread I have now been made aware that Microsoft has changed this prerequisite and a TPM chip is no longer required with Windows 8/8.1 All I need to know now is what's wrong with BitLocker that is causing people to pay up to £150 for a paid for solution or are companies profiteering?

I've tried 3 Apple TV's on the Apple Configurator program each time it gets right to the last stage and then fails saying unknown error so I give up with that bit and I'll have to set them up manually. I've managed to find some security brackets that you screw to the ceiling/wall etc. and then you can physically secure the Apple TV so the little rascals can't walk off with them With regards to Remote Controls - I dont know what to do with these as they're too small to secure to anything and too expensive to hand out to all the staff with iPads. Would love to know how other Secondary Schools are using Apple TVs.

I thought with Bitlocker without a TPM chip you needed a USB memory stick for it to function or was that just Windows 7?

One of the schools we support now has several Windows 8 laptops and they want to perform a Full Hard Disk Encryption like they have on their Windows 7 laptops. On the Windows 7 laptops we/they use TrueCrypt because it works and it's Open Source. Truecrypt wont encrypt a whole hard disk on a Windows 8 laptop. Neither will DesLock. Do any of you know of any encryption software out there that will fully encrypt a whole hard disk on a Windows 8 laptop? Thanks.

OOH - that's interesting! I'll have a look at that now. So you dont actually need the remote control for them to work then? What happens when they go to sleep or power off? Are they just in some kind of standby mode that they can wake up from if someone wants to connect to them via AirPlay?

For me I would like to stop anyone messing about with the settings. I've just put a password on Air Play so they cant access that - but what's stopping them changing the wireless settings for example? Do you have Apple TV in your school, if so how have you locked them down?

You could set up a VPN connection and only allow them access to your SIMS .net server or RemoteApp is another good alternative. We use RemoteApp and it works well - no complaints so far! However, we had issues with RemoteApp on Server 2012 and 2012 R2 so we went back to 2008 R2 and it worked without any hassle.

Check out ServerSource (based in Corby) they're Dell Refurbs with 3yr on-site warranty, we've had a few from them and they've been OK so far - only issue was a RAID battery failed and the next morning an engineer was on site and replaced it.

Another vote for Impero, we use it and it's a great tool that both technicians and teachers can easily use. I even use it to push out quick updates every now and then to computers suite.

Excellent news! I was just checking out the hard disks in the servers we just got from our current supplier and each hard disk is only being held in to the caddy with a single screw and not four like they should be so next time we'll have to look elsewhere so I've PM'd you my email address so we can swap details.

I've just founf out that our current Dell Refurb Server supplier is unable to provide any form of pre-sales advice on any of the hardware they sell and they require the purchaser to know about the equipment that they have sat in their own warehouse so if you buy a server that doesn't do what they said it would do then it's your own fault! We used to buy from Dell directly but their pre-sales support team are not experts on servers and the last time we purchased a Dell server from them they said it would do something and it turns out it most definitely does not and after an internal investigation they basically said, whoops! sorry we made an error. Now we have to spend more money to fix their mistake! So, we're looking for a Dell Refurb Server reseller that can supply us with Servers (as and when we need them) with a 3yr next business day warranty. If you know of such a company (or are such a company) then please post details below and we'll be in touch.

To be honest it all depends on how good the schools IT Security is. We have a cashless catering system and you can either have your fingerprints taken, be issued a swipe card or bring in your own food and drink.

SCDPM 2012 gives me the following error when trying to backup a VM on our Hypervisor Host server: An unexpected error occurred on DPM server machine during a VSS operation. (ID 207 Details: VssError:The shadow copy provider had an error. Check the System and Application event logs for more information. (0x80042306)) When I look at the Windows Event Log I get this message: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error DeviceIoControl(\\?\Volume{b80d01ad-3307-11e3-93f4-001b2165b6fd} - 000000000000030C,0x0053c06c,000000A53BD52960,0,000000A53BD51950,4096,[0]). hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied. From what I understand there is a permission error somewhere, I just dont know if it's a service, registry key or something else?!

Apple Configurator is exactly that a configuration tool, it doesn't manage your iPads - at the moment for our own (very) small batch of iPads we use configurator to basically wipe the iPads after each use and put them back to our Golden Image but this is not Mobile Device Management. I appreciate the best solution is InTune but at around £10 per device, per month it is way out of our price range. So far I have found at least 8 MDM solutions but so far on EduGeek people are only using a couple of them, I was hoping to get some proper feedback from Schools rather than listening to a salesperson of each company telling me there's is the better solution!!!

They're using lightspeed which is normally sourced through your ISP as it may replace your existing firewall, it's something we've discussed with our ISP and they are a reseller so it all depends on what other MDM solutions you guys can tell us about so we can get quotes and work out the most cost effective solution that meets our needs. I'm guessing from the lack of replies, schools that have purchased iPads are not managing with an MDM solution and have just handed them out to people.

From what I understand it's a pain to set up but once done it's OK but doesnt handle Surface RT's. And the person who told me this is interested in whatever MDM solution we go for as they want a proper one themselves!

One of our schools has around 60 iPads that we now need to support and at the moment they are unmanaged so we're looking for a Mobile Device Manager solution so we can easily look after their devices for them. Are you using an MDM solution that you're happy/unhappy with and care to share your experience? Then please let me know roughly how many devices you use it with and an approx costing as I have no idea at this stage how much this is going to cost us? We've also got a few Surface RTs that I'd like to use with MDM too. Thanks.
