Definately leave it in the airing cupboard for 7+ days. If it's still doing the same thing, take it to your nearest Apple store with your reciept and tell them the symptoms - don't tell them you've spilt water on it or they'll just hand it back to you. Play dumb and see what happens.

A much better idea than a standard Vacuum Cleaner that generates a lot of static. You can get proper hand-held anti-static vacuum cleaners but they're around the £200 mark.

When I worked at a College we had core and edge switches from Extreme across 5 campuses around 2 counties and found them to be very reliable. I guess 1 or 2 switches failed over the 5 year period I was there, a few had corrupted themselves and needed their configs restoring (probably one of the Technicians playing around with them that buggered them up rather than 'corrupting themselves' though). We had a yearly maintenance contract that covered both the maintenance of the kit and the configuration of it as well. We had a choice of either getting an engineer out within 24hrs with a new switch or they could just send us a switch and let us download our config file to it. We chose the latter as we actually had a couple of spare switches in our stock cupboard so that way we could get the failed switch replaced very, very quickly. I believe the college has now gone over to Cisco switches as Cisco switches are more expensive so must be better - not quite sure on the logic there but each to their own!

Correct me if I'm wrong but your 'contract' of sale is with the person/company you purchased it from and not the manufacturer so it's them you need to deal/argue with I think.

Have you reported it to your electricity provider? They may have a fault in your area.

I think it's a time thing, around 30 days if it stops working you can normally get your money back and any time after that it's a case of them repairing or replacing the item at their discretion. A few months ago I had experience with 3 dodgy NAS drives that had failed under warranty and we waited ages for them to get refurb units sent out to us. We now use QNAP instead.

We purchased a couple of the new HP printers and they're really flimsy in comparison to the LaserJet 4000's that they replaced and after a few weeks we had to call the engineers out to replace parts under warranty. Needless to say unless we absolutely have to, we'll be sticking to buying the older 4000 series printers that have been refubished - they might be slower but they're much more robust than their newer models.

lol I currently work in the business world but I spent around 6 years working in Education and I have to say the latter was the most fulfilling so I'm really looking forward to getting back in to the world of Education! Just knowing that by doing my job I've helped someone get educated is a great feeling!

Redirecting the desktop to somewhere on your network is probably the best solution.

I've just started playing with those and they work very well. Symantec Ghost still works OK if you dont have Server 2008 available to use too.

I've also had a rather sheepish member of staff come with a laptop they run over. Thankfully we use Lenovo T, R or L Series laptops that have roll-cages inside them so the only thing that was damaged was the screen! Luckily they were away on business in a company car so the insurance for the car covered the cost of a new laptop. Apparently there were two of them and whilst one was paying for the parking ticket at the machine as they were finished for the day, they placed their laptop on the wheel of the car. The driver of the car then thought she'd save some time so reversed a bit (they were parallel parked) and she felt a bit of a bump and assumed it was the kerb and as she thought it was the kerb she put it in to 1st and drove over it again as she got out of the parking space!

I suppose it all depends on if you are expecting accidental damage or damage on purpose. I've seen laptops where the speakers have been gouged out with a pen, damage yes, accidental? Unlikely. You'll have to read the terms and conditions very closely and I would recommend you ask the company involved what is and isn't included in the policy.

After waiting weeks and weeks and weeks for my invitation to purchase a Raspberry Pi I foolishly assumed that when I got an invite they actually had some to sell me! Seven weeks delivery time. Seven weeks! Needless to say I've cancelled my order as it's basically a complete and utter shambles.

Automate it then. On a domain you can have logoff scripts as well as logon scripts. Create a script that runs when they logoff their laptop to disable the proxy settings and have a logon script that enables it when they're back on the domain.

Hi! As you may have seen from my previous thread, I'm just starting to use WDS on my Server 2008 Standard Box. I've managed to install Windows 7 from it on a test machine and have now done the same with a Windows XP image. What I'd like to do next it add some driver packages but the Drivers option (as shown from the attached image) is not there. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong now please?! Thanks.

Hi! I've been using Ghost for creating and deploying images for some time now but I have decided to upgrade my skills and learn something new so I'm giving WDS a try. I've managed to upload a SysPreped Windows XP image on to my WDS server but I'm not sure what I need to do now to deploy it on to 6 old laptops that need a software rebuild. When I boot to PXE the only options I get are to install Windows 7 or the Capture Image option. How do I get my Windows XP image on to that list or do I need to do it another way? Thanks.
