We have italc in all suites here so you can send a message by right clicking on the screen in question. Pops up in a nice little box saying "message from admin" or "message from teacher" Also means if they fail to comply we can lock their screen or take a screen shot for evidence.

You can try a start up script as this is run with admin privileges. If you have the registry key in a .reg file you should be able to call it from a script. The only problem with this is that it will run everytime the machine is started making it a little unnecessary after the first time. You can try this program Bozteck VNCScan Enterprise Network Manager | Bozteck VNC Man With it you are able to send any script to any computer. It has a free trial so you should be able to do what you want before it expires if you don't find it indespensible like i did and buy it anyway

Are you installing the software with group policy. If you are I would think that it would do this on install

I haven't used it but i have a similar program that does the same things It can be found here Very useful tool to have save me noting down the serial number of every networked machine when purchasing new equipment. Just had to add the projectors and whiteboards to it and it's fully functional audit software too. If you don't mind the adverts it will integrate with active directory too which is something i don't think the free version of lansweeper will do

I have 2 DC's but I'm pretty sure they don't replicate properly as I'm unable to raise the domain level on one so it still runs with win2000 functions even though it is running 2003 Just give me a load of nasty errors when I try to do anything domain like with it. It does take away some of the logon pressure from the main server though so it is doing part of it's job. Think I need to reinstall that as well!! I guess thats what you get for being employed after someone who didn't really know their onions. Unfortunately this is a bit of a learning curve for me too as I've onlt ever done vanilla installs before so no exporting or importing of a current setup was needed

I'm looking at installing server 2008 over the christmas holidays. Just thought it might be a good time to clear out the old server (ie not an upgrade but fresh install) Before I do this though i want to make sure that i can export the users and computers from active directory and also whether if i name the domain the same whether the computer will still connect. If this is not going to be easy I'll just have to bite the bullet and do an upgrade but the current server has so many little things that don't quite work as they should it just annoys me that i won't be able to sort them out on server 2008 either.

How cheap is cheap? I bought my system for around £400 although I use it for games as well. It could be firewall but it's more likely to be the way that it sends the messages The program uses the messenger service and so this needs to be started on every computer that you need the messages displayed on and the PMP server. The service was disabled by microsoft shortly after SP1 due to it being exploited by viruses and it doesn't exist at all in vista so you will need to make sure your virus protection is fully up to date if you want to enable it again. Selling you a new version will not even solve this problem as i have V7 and it still uses the same method! You can set the service to start automatically through active directory group policy under computer configuration somewhere

Had an issue with a student comprimising a staf members password last week so I thought I would force all staff to change their network login password. Unfortunately I did this in a hurry and reset them all to blank instead of forcing a password change. I announced this rather sheepishly in the briefing notes in the morning stating that once logged in they will need to change the password manually as a handful had already done this. Although I would have thought it obvious that you cannot have no password at all staff being staff a lot of them still have not changed. (I only no this because the Openfire IM does not allow them to log on with a blank password) I was wondering whether its possible to retrieve the users from active directory who still have blank passwords and set those to reset next logon as i should have done in the first place. I know I could just set them all to do this but think it will cause a lot of complaints (I'm getting enough already for the change in the first place although imho this shouldn't have happened in the first place).

Does this have to apply to the whole domain? If so you can use an enforced policy at the top and it will propagate down all ou's. If not then you can do use a non enforced at top and block inheritance on the ou's that do not apply. See example screen shot

That makes perfect sense. Don't know why i didn't think of it myself. Must be tired too. I'll test the deployment out later and see what happens to my test machines although they are all virtual and don't really give me the problems i get in a real life scenario but can't afford the space for full pc's.

Our LEA blocks the ports for logmein but only during school times. In the evenings and weekends it's unblocked. Not very useful to me as I'm not inclined to work after my working day is finished.

I wanted to do the upgrade but i've been told that the cal licenses can't be transferred between server versions so now I'm going to wait till the licences expire which is october. I don't really want to do the upgrade at half term but I think it will be good to get it out of the way.

That was it thanks. I've been trying to remove accessibility options but I'm sure when I do there will be someone who genuinely needs them. However for anyone else who gets this on the general tab of the accessibility options is a tick box to apply settings to the logon screen

Thats what I thought it was however I've been unable to find the relevent registry key for the logon screen. I've found a default desktop setting for every other user though so I'm pretty sure it's got to be there somewhere. Was hoping someone else had seen something similar because i would like to prevent any future occurrences as well

I've found one of my machines has a rather odd problem. Please take a look at the screenshot below and see if you have had similar/ know how it got that way. I'm pretty sure one of the more tech savvy students have done it but if i knew how it may help prevent it again. As soon as you log on it reverts back to the standard colours so i've been unable to change it by logging in as local admin for example. I've also tried copying a default user profile thinking it may be from there but it isn't. Does anyone know of where the colors for the logon screen are kept in the registry. Short of a solution I can rebuild the machine but as it's going to the big computer room in the sky over the summer i really can't be .

I've been trying to simplify the way teachers can get access to printers they need. I have the main staff room printer always assigned via a group policy in server2003 R2 but I wanted to publish the others they use in active directory. Every time I try this I get the following error "The selected printer cannot be published. Access denied." There is no help on the microsoft site for this and I'm using the administrator account. If I try to add them in active directory it just tells me I need to use the print management snap-in which is where the error above comes from. Any ideas?

I think it can be done using things from here VBScript Tutorial create a user account. Example from Excel spreadsheet and here Bulk rename of user accounts in Active Directory - Active Directory. I'm going to see if I can get something to work just for fun

Just as an aside or maybe a suggestion we use the students admission no. for their logon prefixed with a q (eg q1234 etc). I find this works quite well as this number moves with them through each year and I just have to put them in a corresponding OU thats reflects year of entry. Other than that I'm not sure if it's possible to batch change the users although I batch import them with a script so it may be possible. I'll look into it and return later

I use a free calendar thingy on a website I've done from Calendarix. Uses PHP and is very customisable although I haven't played around with it too much yet. It allows users to add remove things though I don't think it supports LDAP (I use a mysql database for my users so I've not looked into it any further)
