Have you recently done any windows update. We had it lately, with one update for Win 7. It's just stopped drives to be mapped.

It is a bit of a problem for us. We have some students that don't want their picture to be displayed to the public - so will have to change that manually. Strange how it works on google system

Google + was never turned on. Thanks for suggestions, must be something different.

Our school is ind of new to G Suite, fully implemented for both staff and students this September. We have now synced pictures from sims for students. Students have access to gmail but works only within domain - they can't send or receive from outside the domain (apart from few exceptions) But funny thing is, if I type in student email in my private gmail - I can see their profile picture (the emails bouncing back as they should) So I wonder if anyone know the way to stop showing profile pictures outside domain? Thanks

Microsoft EES which products do you purchase?
the_quick replied to tj2419's topic in Licensing Questions
Well I'm bit similar situation, but need to sign for first time to the EES And new licensing for Server 2016 can be quite expensive as you have to buy at least 8 cores and license 16 cores for any physical server and CALs are not cheap either. We are moving away from Office software to G Suite, lots of school around here moved to O365 - option to save money. Regarding the Pack, there is something called Desktop Education Pack - if I'm right license you for Desktop OS, Office and a CAL - last quote I got was £14.56 per Full Time Employee (FTE) As far as I heard tFTE are now calculated differently than before, here what I was give as guide: In the UK, the FTE count is made up of Faculty and Staff members whereFaculty are any employees, contractors and volunteers who teach or perform research for the intuition for more than 200hrs per annum and Staff are non-faculty employees, contractors and volunteers who perform work for the instruction for more than 200hrs per annum and use an institution qualified desktop. The note about "employees such as maintenance, grounds keeping, and cafeteria staff may be excluded from the faculty/staff FTE employee count if they do not use institutional devices" still applies. Some clarification/examples were provided to us by Microsoft: Teachers – I will include all teaching staff - YES Admin – I will include all admin staff - YES Cleaners – cleaners work more than 200 hours per year but don’t have access to a PC – do I need to include them? - NO Kitchen – kitchen assistants work more than 200 hours per year but don’t have access to a PC – do I need to include them? - NO Cook – I will include the cook as she has access to a PC and her own staff username/log on. - YES Midday Assistants – some midday assistants work more than 200 hours per year but none of them have access to a PC – do I need to include them? - NO Teaching Assistants – Teaching assistants work more than 200 hours per year but don’t have their own PC/Laptop or staff user name/log on – they just help the pupils using the computers – do I need to include them? - NO -

Smartphone - copy information from apps to PC
the_quick replied to the_quick's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
The problem with screenshot, snapchat will notify the sender that it was done - we have kids that report this case to the school, but don't want sender to know that they done it. That's why it done with taking picture. Always done in presence of the pupil and SLT member and deleted straight after sending to them - just in case of any accusation. I need some spy super software I guess -

Hi Guys More and more we are asked, by behavior team, to copy snapchat/facebook/whats up conversations from kids phones - as a proof of bullying or other bad behavior. So far we just been using our phones to take pictures of it. But maybe you know a better way? Some program that can access and download that information to a PC? Soon enough we will be running here IT forensics Thanks in advance - Kris

Hi Guys We have bit of strange problems. We trying to reply to email from one company girlguiding.org.uk - but when we recieve emails they always come with addidtional bits and look like this @www.girlguiding.org.uk.cdn.cloudflare.net They are now telling us that our DNS is looking on cname record instead of MX record. So I started playing with nslookup for MX records. From our external dns we get this: Non-authoritative answer: girlguiding.org.uk nameserver = ns1.livedns.co.uk girlguiding.org.uk nameserver = ns2.livedns.co.uk girlguiding.org.uk nameserver = ns3.livedns.co.uk eu-smtp-inbound-1.mimecast.com internet address = 91.220.42.201 eu-smtp-inbound-1.mimecast.com internet address = 91.220.42.211 eu-smtp-inbound-1.mimecast.com internet address = 91.220.42.241 eu-smtp-inbound-1.mimecast.com internet address = 195.130.217.201 eu-smtp-inbound-1.mimecast.com internet address = 195.130.217.211 But from our internal DNS we get this wierd adresess: Non-authoritative answer: girlguiding.org.uk canonical name = girlguiding.cloud.thisiszone.com girlguiding.cloud.thisiszone.com canonical name = www.girlguiding.org.uk.cdn.cloudflare.net Can anyone point me to right direction? DNS sits on our DCs - Windows 2008 R2 Appreciate any help Thx Kris

Thank you guys for your input, it does help a lot. Looks like o365 as email and g suite for everything else might be solution for me. With o365 would you recommend full migration to cloud or use hybrid exchange?
-
Hi Guys So, I'm facing bit of dilemma. Want to move school to cloud services, to start mainly with emails and hopefully full use of it, hopefully to be able to remove local version of office entirely from students PCs. We have initial set up both office 365 and google docs (now g suite) even have 2 teachers using google classroom. We still have office 2010 and exchange of the same flavor - but would like to avoid buying new office/exchange version. Google looks really simple to use, getting rid of exchange entirely but o365 products look better polished, users might have less trouble to switch etc. I like onenote classroom from watching MS presentation, but when try to use it it does look complicated. Tough question eh, what do u recommend from own experience? Thanks

Hi Guys Can you recommend the short throw projectors for the classroom? We have some Optomas and Benqs but we really don't like picture quality on them, both have very poor colour representation - looks washed out. What can you recommend? Thanks

Internet Filtering/FireWall Costs
the_quick replied to mthomas08's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We were looking at this some time ago. But recently our county signed deal with Smoothwall. As we get internet through LEA they provide firewalls as well, but we will be configuring smoothwall as both filtering and FW. At the moment we have quite basic FW from Juniper, but it doesn't do much. When we were looking at filtering we had 2 similar quotes after some negotiations. Both Lightspeed and Smoothwall came around £9k for 3 year deal, smoothwall includes firewall. We have around 1200 pupils and 200 staff. 100MB connection. For me biggest worry is future renewal, both will try to hook you on but 3 years later when deals expires I'm not sure if they will want to give nice discounts, like they do for new customers.- 22 replies

Alternatives to Impero
the_quick replied to william_tropico's topic in Network and Classroom Management
We use Lanschool and it work quite well for monitoring students and remote controls for teachers. And I would probably never take over teachers machine without notification, so that is not needed. We had impero trial few years back and it was impressive but the cost was very high, they were talking about breaking impero into modules - as we really need just the class management part. Teachers like it and got used to it, it does crashes sometimes and if someone is already logged in, teacher app has to be closed on their account before other user can use it. Tech console is very useful as well, we use it to sometime install software that would not easily go through GPO or have to be installed "now". Works well for us, have not used support as yet, so can't comment on that. Cost wise, much cheaper than impero but it does not have lots of functions that impero offers. But again we would not need those.- 38 replies

Hi All Is there a way to have two Sims clients windows open at the same time? At the moment out attendance office have two screens and on second one she uses RDP to VM to have another Sims window. That not always problem free. It would be just easier to have 2 sims programs running at the same time. Anyone has done it? Thanks Kris

[sims] So, is InTouch down for anyone else? (farm3)
the_quick replied to pete's topic in MIS Systems
I know it is already fixed. But it is not first time when intouch went down for longer amount of time. Almost on every occasion hen we report intouch not working, help desk is not aware of it - which for me is really strange, like they either don't have communication with engineers or there is no monitoring in place. With everything virtualised I'm surprised that company of the capita size don't have any replication in place, to bring system online on backup servers. And yes, those updates about progress could be more specific -
Thanks guys fro replies. Yes, databases would with Wamp sit on local c drive, but teacher is OK with that. We going to put password on mysql. LosOjos your solution looks very interesting, could you tell me how you made to apache and mysql to look at mapped drive? Thanks

Hi All I'm looking for some easy and possibly cheap solution, to have internet access history of our pupils. We used to have something called RmSmartcache2 but as we change to multiple vlans it does not support it. Out internet content filtering does not do that (yet). Any recommendations? Thanks Kris
