  1. I am hoping that some of you can help me with a little research. Our web hosting company are wanting to charge us to increase our bandwithd limits on the website, and thus charge us more. They have said that we are getting about 1500 visits a week and they want to increase our capacity to 13 gig per month as we are hitting the limits of our current capacity. The complication comes in that someone has told the woman who manages the website that there is no way we should be hitting that limit and they are making it up to flease us. the someone being a person who, whislt is IT literate (I'm told) does not actually work here. A quick bit of fag paper maths tells me that that equates to 2.2 Mb per hit. That could be plausable as they navigate the site and go to the galaries. For info the website is more and advertisiong tool with static (ish) information as opposed to a live parent forum/remote access/etc. My issues is that I have no comparison to know if our data usage is: 1: About what you would expect for a 400 pupil indy decondary school 2: Massive for the size of our school 3: Woefully inadequate for our school and really we need to up the bandwidth and our marketting department need to get in gear. Any comments would be appreciated.
  2. Unfoprtunately I do have to say that I feel the support has got worse of late. Smoothwall used to be my joint top techncall support but of late it's been a bit below par... Sorry to say.
  3. I was told an hour ago that Capita were having problems with the SOLUS servers today. Could be your issue
  4. I've got it running fine. However after a call with capita the other day at the minute Capita don't support IE 10 or Windows 8
  5. I'm also anoyed as having re-visited the local site it now doesn't seem to work locally yet it blatantly did as I was on it.
  6. I've been struggling for some time to get the software to work after installing the latest version on a new domain with new Win2K8R2 servers. After getting a new licence with the correct netbios domain name I've got the software working if you log into the client on a machine on the domain. I can browse the files see other people's "Outpost box" and it behaves as it should. When I try this from outside the organisation it fails and I can't figure out why. It can't be the firewall on the server as it works internally, I've also tried turing off the servers firewalls by way of a test. The appropiate port mapping/rule is set up on the firewall to allow the software to connect and it does make an attempt getting to the "Establishing Session" stage but then fails saying "The connection to the Outpost Server has closed". The FAQ says that this is down to passowrd issues but as I can log in as the same user internally I don't think so. If I change the inbound allow rule on the firewall which opens the communitcation port for Ranger (Either server IP or port) it faile during the initail stages of the connection attempt (As I would expect) which to me at least it is in part communicating with the server. The only other thing I've noticed is that the FAQ implies that if you try connecting as user who is not a member of the Outpost User group that it will fail with a different error. When I try that it fails with the same error. So I'm stuck and confused.
  7. You need Win2K8R2 DC's to upgrade the schema. Have a look at Group Policy preferences for printer deployments. I looked at deploying the printers through printer deployment then realised that you can specify the default printer so knocked it on the head and used GPP's
  8. I've got a couple of devices transmitting VGA over Cat5 so I know it works. My question is can I broadcast it over switches. I am anticipating having to set up a seperate VLAN for the signal but was wondering if I could connect the source into a switch and have it communicatie with a device elsewhere. Additionally if that's possible is it possible to have a number of destinations? i.e. I have a single source broadcasting and then 4 converters scatter around the school to pick up the signal and drive a number of displays.
  9. I've copied your code into a workbook and it runs OK. How about changing the name of the Sub to "AutoOpen" so it runs everytime it runs when the workbook opens. Possibly change it to an xlsm file which is what I've saved it as? Blast beaten too it!
  10. Hi there, I was wondering if any one has any examples of a "What is SLG" type letter they have sent to parents? We are rolling it out and whilst I can explain it technically I need to tone it down a bit without making the letter to parent massively long winded. Something I am not great at. I was hoping someone might we willing to share a parents "welcome to SLG"... I'm also curious how much info you included as I want thinking on the way in that there will be issues like password re-set and so on. Cheers.
  11. So presumably I am going to need to buy a server 2012 licence then to the the KMS key. I presume that when I install it on my 2008 R2 server that server will keep running.
  12. I've already got a KMS server running activating Win7 and 2008R2. However it doens't seem to activate Win8. Now i've found this little KB article, Update adds support for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 KMS hosts with a patch and some isntructions which all looks fine however it sat that I need to improt a KMS host key for Win8 or Server 2012 activation using the command cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk What exacly am I putting in the bit. Is it simply the KMS ket from my windows Volume licencing site or is there something else I should be looking for?
  13. Hi there, We have jusst been given 20 ipad2's and I was looking into configuring them en-mass. I've found the apple configurator (Which i'm guessing is what I need to set up/manage multiple ipads easilly) but it seems to only be for OSX lion. There is a iphone configurator with a windows installer but I'm not 100% sure this configures ipads. Any help and advice?
  14. Thanks @jinnantonnixx I'll give that a go.
  15. Hi there, I need some scripting help please. Every day one of the database servers backs up the databse files to disk (on the server). The files are stored in folders called Daily_YYYY_MM_DD_2300 and it creates 7, one for each day of the week, and then overwites the oldest so I always have 7 folders. However I need to back them up to external storage somehow. I wanted to avoid having to delete and re-copy all the files due to slow network speeds. Basically I need to copy the newest backup folder from the source and delete the oldesst backup folder on the destination. any ideas?
  16. As I posted this over the holidays I thought I might raise it up again to see if anyone knows an answer.
  17. I realise the last post was OT ish. No I don't know how to do what @FN-GM wants. I don't think you can as far as I am aware.
  18. We decided to use AD inegration. Our discussion was that there is enough confidential info on the network anyway if a pupil gets a staff members password the damage is already done as the staff were prety much using the same passwords for both. What we have done is made SIMS easier to use and tried to remove technological restrictions staff were hiding behind to avoid using it. I don't disagree with the arguments against it, they are valid. We just took a different approach. There has to come a point when responsibility lies with the end user, the more tech barriers we stick up to be secure the more barriers there are to people using it. It's a fine line, I know.
  19. Oh oh oh! Just had exactly the same issue on a 2310 . Does the device click out of standby like it's receiving the print job then do nothing? I found out the Bursar failed to pay for the optional extra so the photocopier understood PCL6! If you go back onto Sharp's website there is another driver language for the sharp photocopiers, SAPL if I remember correctly. Download the 64 bit and 32 bit versions, install as normal and away you go. Or at least away I went.
  20. OK. Just looking at an odd issue here, If you've got a full licence for the admissions module please can someone have a look at: Tools==> Lookups==> maintain Search for "apppication status". Tell me what the Category for the secriptions; "Enquiried", Call for Open Morning", "Have been to open morning", "Visited-Parents only" are Cheers
  21. Any suggestions then?
  22. Hi there, I've got an issue with the Ranger Outpost software, the site I'm at use it and at current there is no money to replace it (even though I know RM have replaced it with something else) My current set up is a DC on site with two more DC's at a different site. Ranger Outpost is installed on the DC at the site with the single DC. Now when I'm at site I can log in via the client and access the share/staff areas/own area so it should all be working. Firewall is set to allow access on the correct port When I try and access it from outside it errors at the "Establishing Session" stage. The FAQ says that this is probably due to incorrect password but I know it's correct and it all works inside. any ideas why this would be the case or what I could do or check to fix it?
  23. I've got IIS 7 running a basic website on my 2K8R2 server, running on port 80. Also running on the server is my E-mail server with it's web interface running in it's build in web server running on port 3000 (for non HTTP) and also in HTTPS The mail server does an automatic re-direct if you connect to it to drop it into HTTPS. This works fine from outside and fine from inside if you put in http:\\webmail:3000. Simply putting in http:\\intranet will bring up the intranet. No the problem comes if internally someone types in http:\\webmail as this brings up the intranet. As both DNS alias's resolve to the same server and web browsers default to port 80 this is not unexpected but I don't want it to happen. Can I get IIS to understand that the web requests on port 80 where the URL is http:\\webmail are redirected to https:\\webmail even though that site is run in a different web server. i.e. it would need to completely redirect the web borwser to a different site.
  24. Have you installed the SSL certificate onto the Server (i.e. have you generated the CSR, uploaded then imported it back into IIS?
  25. Totally OT but what network PDF printer are you using? Just curious...
