  1. Apparently the answer is in KB29541 assuming it's still valid (I asked the same question o Supportnet, the response on here is nor mally quicker, however ). @Jamman960 SLG doens't give access to actually USE Nova/Options.
  2. Is there a way to install some of the modules, probably more specifically Options, on a stand alone machine? Thus allowing a memeber of staff to work on them outside of the College on their own time?
  3. I'm winingin it at the minute. Currently our art department have 150GB of the 6th form and 150 for the lower school. Being a small school it works out at about 3GB per student JUST for their art. It does run very full but when I look at it there is a lot of duplication and issues where they have over 100 photo's then duplicate them into work/research and don't delete teh unwanted ones. It backus up as normal onto my NAS.
  4. You know that looks a bit familiar I may have done that 4 years ago on my old DC's. Amazing what you forget when you only do it once years ago. Thanks. I did however also realise they had not updated it for 2008 so I tried putting the files I need on my test server (which is 2K8) and setting up the alias and it worked fine. As I won't need the file after the summer they can sit there for a little while. Edit: Sorry to be technically correct I did have to reghack the server to get it to work for XP clients. It works fine as standard for Win 7 Machines (I assume it's to do with SMB 1 vs SMB 2 but it does say that if you actually read the article).
  5. I recenlty removed a serverof servers from my domain. I renamed it first and it worked for a while then it died. I created an CName record with the old name and pointed it to one of my other servers so that there would be any machine/script/program that looked for the old server would find the files that they needed on another server. If I ping then i get a response from . So it all looks OK. However it I try and access \\\ it won't connect. When I ran the win7 diagnostics it told me that more than 1 device responded. When I delete my Cname and try to ping nothing happens. I also cannot connect via windows explorer (which i what I'd expect). I also tried creating a false A record and that failed too. At each stage I flushed the DNS. So why won't this work? (it's 2K8 R2 DC's but the new server I'm trying to connect to is 2K3)
  6. Do you work here? That's the same problem I have and with the same department? Actually it's a pain when it come to archiving off the old data as some of the REALLY long file names wont go onto DVD and I have to spend ages renaming files.
  7. IS it me or is there a slight contridiction between those two points, the first saying we need a licence the second saying there is an exception for schools? Is it saying that if I purchase a DVD I can show it, however if I record something I need to have a licence?
  8. Independant school here, no LEA. Though internesting I wonder if we have a licence. That would make things interesting.. Having said that we could be covered as part of our group. some investigation may be needed.
  9. This seems to be cropping up a bit at the minute and I'm a bit out of my comfort zone so I need some advice. What are the rule for showing video's in classes? In particular when it comes to showing things of iPlayer and the like? Are you allowed to reocrd programs from the telly then show them in class? Isn't that a public viewing? My particular problem at the minute is that one memeber of staff has found some software called WM Capture. IT basically records a rectangle from your computer screen and saves it as a video file. This can also be used to take footage from sites like youtube/Iplayer. Now I'm fairly confaident, though not 100%, that this will count as "trying to circumvent the DRM" and as such is naughty and I'd like to shoot it down quickly but I'm not 100% and I need be more certain of my facts before starting an argument.
  10. Running a vanillia netowrk here the only thing I really feel that I lack here is the ability to package up programs without MSI files and deploy them (though I've just decided to start looking into that again). I accept that there are pro's and con's to both methods. For me I'd rather not pay to do something Windows can do. I'd rather learn how to have Windows do it. I don't like the idea of having to install and manage something else on top of my network. We used to have Winsuite and I got rid of that fairly swiftly. There will probably never be a "best". It's up to each of us to make a decisison what's right for both us and our organisation.........
  11. I always seen to have to add the windows update sites to the list of trusted sites in IE to get windows update to work. You'd think by default they'd be in there...
  12. DSADD is whe windows scripting command and works fine. I've got it set up in an excel spreadsheet but it's designed for the specific export from SIMS. i.e. run a report copy the results into my spreadsheet, copy the cell's containg my formula's into a .bat file and run.
  13. Either that or make them stand on podiums above a giant vat of custard, each holding a giant cotton bud and make them fight in a "gladiators" styleee. Last one standing is the best! (Sorry that's a bit OT)
  14. +1 for the different numbe of connections for staff (not that I want to be nice the them but I might have to). Second question, if it runs using login/logoff scripts can I simply assign it to my student GPO so that it doesn't run for the staff?
  15. I'll PM you that answer to that question and if you've seen something different please let me know. However I will publically say that the presentation/presenter did not inspire me to buy the product at all. I was also not blown away by the product. We don't really want a product for "anyone anywhere". We would like one for the school population!
  16. There was a product demo'd at the independant conference this year that does extra curricular from one of their partners. To be honest it looked Rubbish! The presentation itself was terrible, the software seemed messy and wasn't a two way communication between SIMS and it so you could take registers for activities but then not import them back into SIMS. Having chatted to a couple of other people I didn't find anyone who was blown away. When I asked the guy from Capita who was in that session what had happened to the SIMS module for extra curricular he said prety much what Sivadam has quoted.
  17. I wish I could do justice to the leavng speach one of the teachers gave here. He was moving back to Oz so no chace of a return, his speach included props and ended with him presenting the dept head an "aid to decision making. When unsure about what decision to make simply assign one decsion to heads and the conflicing decision to tails and flip". The dept head did not look impressed.
  18. I find it slightly amusing that you would get such thing's. Whilst the size and the quality of the membership is a testament to it's success when thinking of area's to SPAM, "That forum where all the IT Geeks who work in schools post" does seem like an odd choice. I didn't realise this place was so popular in vietnam! Add in we are IT professionals we are least likely to fall for anything you'd tink they'd pick on people on the Microsoft Forums And you've not been sued yet for infringing on their constitutional rights?
  19. I sitll can't get 2007 templates into my reports. That would seem to imply a failure to support 2007 fully, let alone 2010. Having said that I'm eagerly awaiting some keys so I can install 2010.
  20. Sold mine fine. Just was honest and upfront. Highlighted all the problem as well as the positives. Put it on acution for a week and every day I got E-mails from people asking to buy it there and then. Got over £200 for an old corsa the garage wouldn't even contemplate part ex-ing.
  21. If you've got 2k8 32 bit, as 2k8R2 is 64bit only expect pain.
  22. Just picked the verison number off an old topic on a nother board. I dug out an old Cisco Pix firewall that I wanted to play with but according to the internet "the PDM won't work woth anything above version 1.46 of Java."
  23. Does anyone have a copy of Java 1.46 or lower (possibly down to 1.43) that they could possibly E-mail to me or PM me a link? Yes I know it's a long shot but it doens't hurt to ask Cheers.
  24. Our's is build on Drupal. It's OK and I belive it's open source
  25. I've resoted to rediting my registry to have the details "You name will be entered here". I have an AutoOpen Macro which updates the code for documents as they are opened. I have an AutoNew which updates new documents when they are created for file New. I tried AutoExec for when Word was opened but it executed prior to the document opening so just errors (you can't selecet and update things that are not open!) Blooming Microsoft!
