Actaully this got massively on my nerves. When they were saying that people were queuing and were turned away they failed to mention how long they had been there. If people had turned up at 8 and been queuing for two hours then they have a point that it is unfair and something needs to be done. If everyone turned up with 5 minutes to go expecting to be able to vote then it's more their problem for leaving it to the last minute and they only have themselves to blame. If the polling station shuts at 10, it SHUTS at 10. Not if you trun up before 10 then you still get to vote. We all work in schools, how many times to we tell pupil's not to leave things until the last minute!

mmmmm..... Multi domain... Oh Tom, can I ask for "Number of Concurrent Logins based on group membership" for some point in the future. It would be nice to limit my staff/pupils to 1 login and me and my techie to UNLIMITED!!!

It's not that cunning.... Smoothie looks at my Accademic domian (500+ users) but obviously can't look at my Admin domain (20ish users) . Basically as I'm only using NTLM Ident all I need to do is create some user account in my Accademic domain with the same name as the Admin domian users. Put them in a domain group and then map it to a new smoothie group. This does seem to work for my test user. The downside is that I can't use NTLM Auth as the passwords don't match. I could easilly script the whole user creation process using DSADD.exe but as you say we might be getting the new auth in the next two weeks I'm tempted not to bother and see what options i have with that when it's released.

Assuming that all my user are in domain groups which are mapped to smoothwall groups... Do I need the "default users" group enabled?

Cheers. I've just put all the latest updates on and it seems OK. I think I've just wokred put how to blag the NTLM ident for two domains (lucklly domain 2 is only about 20 users) but I'm hoping the new Auth3 will do it better. Might hold of making any changes until next week then if the updates are that close.

So when do we get the new Auth then? Or is it still "soon"

I've got a GPO on my computers that applys preference settings to the computer and sets the power saving on the monitors to 5 minutes. I've then got a GPO on the uses that sets it again. If your students it sets it to 5 minutes, if your staff 1hr. Now as I usnderstand it preference settings are set at the time but are changeable unlike policies. Also when a user logs in it should apply the user policy changing the settings. The problem is that a couple of teachers seem to have a problem in that their screen's go off after 5 minutes. Now when I log in and test it the setting look OK and after 5 minutes the screen stays on. All accounts are in the same OU so they are the same. Any idea why this may occur? I've just tried deleting one's local profile to see what happens...

So I've finally got around to replacing the printers that are a rendered obsolete due to lack of driver support from 2K8 R2 and I'm wondering what to choose. I'm looking for 3 printers, paying about £350 (inc VAT) per printer. I was looking at an HP Laserjet CP2025n but there appear to be no dedicated 64bit drivers and I'm not feeling 100% confident of the Universal Printer Driver. I think my alternatives are the Canon i-SENSYS LBP7200CDN or the Xerox Phaser 6280n. the xerox, despite being the ugliest, seems the best value for money and appears to currently have a cashback offer on. I do have all HP printers at the moment so I'd rather have that but I'm tempted with the Xerox which has 64bit drivers. Anyone have any experience getting either to work on their servers?

Pupil's at our school range from 13-18. Do I unblock the "unmoderated Images sites" category and trust that the dynamic content will catch most of the bad stuff? Or do I play it cautious and totally block them? Opinions? What do you do if you are a smoothie users?

After one of the pupils came to see me because all they had of their work was a blank document and not the letter of appoligy they claimed they had written I go to thinking... If you assume that pupils are not lying or massivley techno-incompitent (crazy I know but go with me here) and that they have not: just not saved the document not typed anything, not saved a blank document over the top with the same name not let given their password to 12 of their frinds one of whom has deleted the important document they had to hand in... Is there a way in which the could suddenly find that the document was blank when previously it had lots of text in it? (other than those listed above) I am obviously strongly inclined to say "no" but as I am not all-knowing (last time I checked) I thought I might ask.

We produce a booklet here for each term that lists all the school events, sports, lectures etc (maybe it's just an independt school thing). Ultimatly it's a list. Days are listed then each event on that day is listed. I have finally mamanged to get them to use an electronic shared calendar in our E-mail system rather than writing things on a board outside the Dept Head's office. The previous system was people wrote on the Dept Head's board, then one of our secretaries typed it all up and produced the calendar. This was then printed in draft form to be checked, amendments made and then retyped then sent to printers. The new system is (should be) that staff enter the information in the calendar in the correct fields. We then have a checking phase. The list is then exported to excel, delete any unwanted columns and then sent to the printers who will prodice the calendar. The spreadsheet is also uploaded to our VLE and school website. The problem is that apparently having a list printed from excel or viewing the calendar on screen isn't "Transparent" enough and people cant "get a feel for the term". Despite the fact that the original method of looking at the calendar was looking at a list, just formatted differently. So what procedure do you use for creating a published calendar? Do you use any particular software? Ho do you do it?

It's OK I figured it an It's my bad It's all down to DNS issues as I creted and host address for it which wasn't being resolved locally. Created a new entry in DNS and it started working. I had previously been using IP address during testing. Unfortunaltely it was very similar to a problem they are currently having. Of slight concern is that I received quicker response on the free forum rather than the technical support I am paying for.

Hi all, Just found a problem with my Sonicwall device and my new 2K8 R2 servers. I can't access any file shares through it without having to re-enter my username and password. This only works for access shares via the HTLM version, the Java version just stops with an error. I've an officail case open with Sonic wall but the un-official one I had on their support forums yielded a quicker response that Sonicwall were aware of the issue and looking at a fix to enable prompting in the Java version as well. Apparently I can specify the credentials to use and that will work as well but that's a bit useless. Now I'd rather have a fix that made it work properly like is did and still does with my Win2k3 DC's. Thought some people may be interested.

Tom, Did I read somewhere that you would be ably to modify the order in which block/apply rules appear in the list? Will that mean that I could leave my custom block rules near the top and have them always blocked even if the categories are allowed further down?

Actually I gave up with simsperm.bat. Sometimes something went wron and I had to go back to the machine to upgrade it. most of the time I forgot about it when I put a new SIMS machine in. Those problems went away when I addedd all the security setting to a GPO.

OK so I've been playing and whilst I've sort of improved it a bit I've come accross something I couldn't get round. "Allowing" news sites to stop them being blocked by the adaptive filtering. This then enables the whole of sky.com including the Skyplayer, which I don't want. But I can't block it as the allow overrides the block. If I turn off the allow news then it blocks some news sites (even with the "good content" news fiter turned on) on certain pages.

Right, I know this is a bit basic but every year I forget and get confused... What dates do I need to put in when creating my accademic year? For example. The pupils come back on the 6th September however we have two training days on the 2/3 September. Looking at the EOY document it looks like I should create term starting on the 2nd then later define the the 2nd and 3rd as inset days. All pupils then have an admittance date of the 6th. Is that correct?

You'd think with there being a 64bit 2003 server and Websnese releasing a major version upgrade to V7 in the last couple of years you would have thought they may have at least wrtten in 64bit compliance.

Play the I player straight out through the DVD recorder and record it. Thouh judging by Kipling's post that may something I am not doing.

I was wondering if anyone could share with me what sort of changes they have made to their smoothwall system for their school (13-18 age group). It seems that the default is causing a few problems. Some sites are just the pupil's complaining but some are actually usefull sites that are blocked, mostly I believe by the adaptave content checking. I've just upped the trip limit to "160" but I was wondering if any of the experienced people out there had any suggestions for configuration changes.

For some reason my EPO server failed to update today so I'm a about 2 DAT versions below the problem one. Dodged that bullet. Think I'll leave it off for a day or too until they sort them selves out. (yes I know they've already pulled the problem update but it never hurts to be safe).

Is it possible to perminantly record programs from Sky Player/I Player etc onto PC. When I looked at I player is seems to be that the rights manamgement will only let you watch it a certain number of times for a certain lenght of time. It is possible without "getting some software"? I ask as one of the teachers keeps repeatedly telling me that Sky+ has made DVD's obsolete and they can't keep any important documentaries. I did point out DVD's had made video's obsolete and that a (HDD) DVD recorder would solve the problem but that argument doesn't seem to have sunk in. Second question, can you hook a PC up to a DVD recorder? Do I need a posh DVD recorder to do it?

Ouch! I was only on 1 year contract. Do you need to upgrade the server? I was told as part of my compaints that 64bit support was on the roadmap for 2011. Unfortunately I was changing servers couldn't have one extra just to run websense (Plus I'd always had logging issues so it wasn't the end of the world)
