Yep it's a bit late but cheers anyway vik. I've installed this as I could figure out based on the SQL Express install and it all seems to be working OK. Bonuses include it fixing the fact that the exam result import was very slow unless run on the server!

Glad I'm not the only one. I'm sure I changed their status and couldn't find them.... Interestingly I noticed that the timetable hadn't been applied (Tools ==> Accademic Management ==> Apply Timetable (and despite me asking the Capita Consultatnt who was here to do that little job when he was doing some timetable training for the new year)). Would that have made a difference?

Where would I find that? (sorry, not done any Nova Training!!) Should that matter? If I set the dates forward in the wizzard until after terms starts they should be there. If I look under Focus, School, Accademic Structure, Assignment by scheme they all start on the 2nd.

So our new Director of Studies is having trouble printing timetables. Now we're into the start of term (from the 2nd) our admission's officer has admitted the new pupils with their start dates as the 6th (which is correct as far as I have always been told because that is when they come). Also the do all HAVE timetables. When you go into Reports, Print Timetables and follow the wizard changing the effective date for the 6th the new pupils don't appear. Any suggestions why? For reference I can go to Reports, Timetables, Student Timetables, set the date forward, find the whole year group, select the students (who do appear) and generate their timetables but this view cuts out the room for each class in the cells.

Done that Just need to wait until the start of term has died down when I can actually get it set up. Whislt it's certainly the easiest solution it's not the only one and I'd be remiss if I didn't do some investigation.

Ohh I had something like this randomly on some Win XP machines. Never figured out what was causing it so I scripted the login scripts to unmap it. Win2K8R2 servers if that's relevent. OK I realise that's not helpfulll but I didn't want you to feel alone.

We've recently switched ISP and we now no longer have a layer of mail filtering from our ISP. My mail server has a version of SPAM assassin build in but I'm noticing an increase in the ammount of SPAM actually getting through so I am currently looking at something else to add another level of filtering. I'm only in the tentative investigation stage, and I also need to see if I can configure my the SPAM filter on the mail server to perform a bit better but I was wondering what others were using or could reccomend. Paid or free it doens't matter, I'm just interested.

I was wondering if someone could provide so advise about my DNS Setup. We've got two DNS servers (both DC's) both hosting our local DNS. Both servers network configuration is to use themselves as DNS servers. In the DNS server settings DNS forwarders are configured. For LocalServer1 the forwarders are: LocalServer2 ISPServer1 ISPServer2 and for LocalServer2: LocalServer1 ISPServer1 ISPServer2 Is this correct? The reason I ask is should the first line (which I didn't set up) where each localServer looks at the other localserver first be there? Or should the forwarders JUST be my ISP servers?

I'd suspect the inbuilt DSMod will work (combined with some basic scripting in Excel!)

Hi there, Is the Smoothwall Spam filter any good? I think I'm going to be in the market for some additional spam filtering. The simplest option would be to add the SmoothZap module so I was wondering if anyone is using it and what they thought?

Has anyone managed to successfully deploy Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 via Group Policy? I've found a few bit's and pieces and a similar thread on here but can't seem to find a full guide. I was wondering if I can edit the setup.ini but will that be pocked up by an group policy deployment?

Yes... now that was what I though but there's nothing there. So does this mean that the entries got removed when I migrated to new servers? If so how am I getting on the internet? SHOULD my ISP's DNS servers be listed in there?

So this morning I swapped over my connections to my new ISP. Changed over my firewall and made very change I needed and I'm certainly using my new interent as it's faster. Incoming connections look OK so I'm reasonably happy. Where I'm confused is that appart from in my firewall I've not specified any new DNS servers. My Smoothwall proxy looks at my local DNS (not sure if that's OK but it seems OK) but the internet works. Now I had a feeling that in my old 2K3 servers I'd specified my ISP's DNS servers in DNS so if a request could not be resolved locally, i.e. you put a websire it, it forwarded the DNS request onto my ISP and I was under the impression that this needed to be done. The problenm is that I can't find any record of where I've got my old ISP DNS setting in my migrated 2K8R2 servers which confuses me as I'm not sure how anything is being resolved? Any advice?

Our exam officer's got all the details from capita how to sort it so I've got a bit of fixing to do in a couple of days. (as all the head want's is spreadsheet analysis we can change the results to keep him happy and the me and the exam's officer can fix sims when it's quieter). Thanks OCR - NOT!

Yes that was what I was reading last night. It's B-9 where it talks about the incoming traffic. Essentially I am looking to make both "public". I think it will be OK, it's just having not done it before I'm not feeling confident. Will probably just have to "suck it and see". To be honest I'm not actually looking to load ballance the connection as I want to be using our new faster internet. I just need two active outside ports for incomming connections.

Just had a problem arrise importing the OCR GCSE results for English and RS. For some reason when we imported these results we got an "aspect type equivilent for element not found" error however the results seemed to import. When we looked at the results there were there but it wasn't until we analysed the results that we realised there was a problem. All the students who should have got an A* were listed in SIMS as having and A. However it was only this subset of results that were wrong. Those students who had A's had A's, the B's were B's and so on. Whislt we didn't check eveyone we did two random sample checks and it all looked OK. We varified the results we had against an export direct from the exam board. I have not yet started looking into it as people are frantically trying to get some print outs done to give out but before I start playing Capita/Examboard tennis I was wondering if anyoine had had similar problems? and what did you do to fix it? Capita have given us a patch and a generic "it's all OK" KB article, well the patch did nothing and it's clearly not OK

Basically the issue is this. We are currently in the process of moving ISP and that means a new range of IP addresses. My concerns over the temporary delay in incomming E-mail as DNS changes kick in. (well not me personally but "certain" people at work get shirty if E-mail isn't received instantly ) So my I have a slightly hardware specifc question. I have a Netgear FVX538 firewall which usefullly has Dual WAN ports. The downside is that now is not the ideal time to get all experimental with my firewall so I need some advice on how to confgure it. If I set it up in load-ballancing mode and configure each port for my old and new ISP does the second port remain active for incomming connections? i.e. can I set up firewall rules for port1 with my new mail servers IP address and Port 2 with my mail servers old IP address and stilll receive e-mail on both IP's while I wait for the DNS changes to perculate over the internet? As I read the instruction manual it say that the load balancing is actually only applied to the outgoing connections but doensn't really mention incomming. I currently have it set up to only use a single WAN port. I am assuming that the second port is "deactivated". Is this the case? Can I just plug in a connection to the second port and it still be active and thus accept incomming traffic? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers. I'll give that a go. It's an Admin install via Group Policy. As I uninatall the old driver and re-install it mgiht be that. I'lll have to be more carefull when I do the next update.

I've got a TDS ActivBoards plugged into a Com Port. I've just dropped in the 5.4.6.1 driver and the board won't connect to it. If I look at the serial settings it says "not connected". Even if I switch com port it changes back to com1 and won't connect. If I turn the board off and on it "beeps correctly" when it starts up Any ideas? (NB I don't know if this started with this driver install or a previous 1) it would be possible that it's been like this for a few driver updates and no-one's mentioned it)

Yep. Done it loads. You need to create an admin install then there's another app to add in the licence key and modify the ini file. I'm out and about at the minutes but le me know if you want any deatails and I'll write something up when I'm back in the office.

We had a random error where is said it didn't have permissions to write to the DB and a failure to import 1 grade for 1 student. Which was odd as I had previously imported two files.... Second time round (had to correct some other errors, Damn you pupils moving schools and your ULN's!!!!) it worked fine and imported. We also had some unknown marks due to student's getting an "x". THough we think they may have failed to hand in some assignments.

Wimped out and left it on. On the upside my SQL Migration all looks OK so "Yeah". Leave SQL 2005 on until October half term then shut it down.

Have you looked on the local computer? Maybe the "domain users" has been added to the PC's Local admin group? Or something allong those lines?

Is the Document Server path re-mapped regardless then?
