That's where I went first. The problem is that it then had MY name in the footer until the user perfoms an action to update the field codes. These mostly seem to be print/print preview. Until that point my name is going to be on the bottom of the document which is going to confuse...

Your right it is .dotm. And I have been forced into macro's as the cant get the code to auto update when I want it by itself. The problem is that my Macro works when existing documents are opened. The Macro works when New documents are created (Office Button, New) but it doesn't work when you click on the Word Icon and open Word and are presented with a document. I can't seem to work out where to put it to make it work. the field code will update when you print which is OK ish.... but I want it to be perfect to help the hard of thinking.

I'm (still) trying to get a person's name into the footer of every new Word document that's created. I thought I had it cracked until I noticed that Word only updates some field codes when you print. So whist if someone prints/pront priviews a document their username changes until they do it has my name in the footer. I could enter somthing random like "your username will be inserted here" but I don't want to. I want to have their username from the word go. I've been looking on google and I can't see a way to force the codes to auto update without using a Macro? Is there a way for force a field to update all the time the same way the data does? I've used the record macro feature to record a macro to update the field codes if you go to file and new (AutoNew) or open an exiisting document (AutoOpen). The problem is that I can't get it to work for the document that opens when you first click on Word. If I create an "AutoExec" macro it fails, presumably because the document isn't open. OK Couple of things here: First things first there are two sets of permissions that apply. Share permissions and Folder permissions. These combine and the most restrictive level of permissions applies. For example if my share permissions are Read Only and my Folder Permissions are Full control then I actually have Read Permissions. Thus the share permissions need to be at least the same level that you want the users to have on their folder. I personally tend to assign all my share permissions as "Domin Users/Domain Admins/System - Full Control" and remove the "Everyone" group unless really necessary. I then grant the users "Change" access to their own home folder (i.e. they DONT have "Full Control") but no access to the users folder itself. What I mean is that my users share is \\servername\Users\ and coresponds to e:\users on my server. A users home area is mapped in to \\servername\users\username\ and they have "change" access. If they managed to bypass the security and get to \\servername\users\ then they would have no rights to view anything. i.e. they couldn't start browsing through other users areas.

It seems that my google-fu is weak this day... I want to stop users changing The user name filed in Office (Word/Excel/Powerpoint Options ==> Popular ==> Username). Is there a group plicy field to do that?

Both my DFS Namespaces are in domain mode are resolve from \\FQDN\sharename and \\Server\share1. Infact I just noticed that I can use either of my DC so I could have \\server1\share1 or \\server2\share1 and both resolve OK.

You are OK. I figured out a fraction of a second before you posted it that the First name and surname are missing from MY AD account, and ofcourse I'm testing in that!!! Entries filled in and it works OK. P.s. is there a way to lower the case of the initials? Oh and if I put the error suppression in don't I need a "next" somewhere? When I put it in at the bottom it errors.

If they are in differnt OU's create a new query (go to the "saved queries" folder) instaed of using the Search. You then get a list you can export to a text file. You can then open the list in excel. Using Excel formula's you can create commmand for each PC (I use ping PCNAME -w 5 >> h:\pingres\pingres.txt). copy and paste your formula into a text file and then rename it a .bat file. I run this when my updates are runing to see which PC's are on, the results are then appended to a file for me to check when I get in.

Rubbish... better head over to the scripting forum and see if someone can tell me how to do that then. My VBS skills are best described as "poor"

Hi there, I need some script advice as I basically know nothing. I say "advice" something I can copy would be very helpfull I need a script that I can run at login that queries AD for the name (e.g. John S. Smith) of the user then adds/modifies that sting to a reg key. In this case HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\UserInfo\UserName Help?

I was wondering if there was a variable for a users full name? I want to add a users full name into the reg key for the office user at login. I've been playing and I've used GP Preferences to replace the current value of CU\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\UserInfo\UserName with %USERNAME% This works and is OK, but would be much better if I could pick a users "Name" (e.g John S. Smith)

Good call but that won't work from outside school. Which is wew people are most likely to go "what was the site again?" I also want to avoid having to sent the hard of thinking to 1 site to get a link to go to another. I can put links to it all over the place internally. It's for those at home I'm thinking of.

Soon we are having SIMS SLG installed with capita hosting. When we get the URL for the site it's in some massively user unfriendly format such as http://hslgxx.capita-cso.co.uk/schools/xxxx/SLG As this is not that catchy I was wondering about setting up a alias in my own DNS that was a bit easier such as http://slg.schooldomain and then pointing it to the site name I was given. Now this is where my DNS/website knowledge gets a little vague. Can I actually do that? I don't what to point at the IP address in case Capita ever muck around whith the IP address. Secondly if I'm resolving to the domain name will I need to get capita to enable the website to support requests to slg.schooldomain? I think yes but I'm not sure. Any help and advice would be appreciated. Sorry forgot to mention I'm wanting to do this in our "external" DNS not the one hosted by my servers on site.

I use merge mode quite a bit for adding printers to PC's. In your case (as I understand it) in your newly created GPO set the loopbak processing to "merge" then "disable" the drive restrictions. This will mean that all other settings should be applied then it will remove your drive restrictions.

It's in group policy (assuming you've the IE8 adm files) UC\Policies\Admin Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\InPrivate

When you install the certiificate choose "Place all certificates in the following store" and then put it into the "trusted root certification authorities" store.

Move them into a new group? How easy this is willl obviously depend on how compley your filtering rules are...

I've not had a massive problem with the with a 13-18 age group. After you get past the "why can't we go on facebook" and other sites not remotely educationally related it's OK. As we are an independant school I don't have anyone above me (i.e. and LA) configuring the safteynet plus whcih means I just have the basics. No filtering is 100% perfect. There are always going to be sites not blocked when they should be, blocked when they shouldn't and generally classified differently to what you think they should. You just have to find something you are happy with. RM are OK IMO, a bit pricey but OK.

I have no desire to use RM's Connect software. I do feel that I can run my network OK with a vanilla network. However we have use them as our ISP for some time. I would agree that they seem a little pricy however I have had no major issues with their support and generally the service has been good. I'd pay a bit extra to get safetynet Plus so you have control of the internet filters. We don't use easymail as I have my own on-site server but we do relay all mail through them so it gets filtered. What I have seen is the price does inclued everything some alternative have been Provision cost+filteringcost etc. Our biggest problem has been the age old problem of ISP vs BT when there is a problem. They've handled it as well as could be expected during a couple of major outages and I don't really hold anything against them I'd like to stay with them but unfortunatley I have got a massively better deal from elsewhere that they can't get close to so I won't be renewing when our contract is up later this year.

But surely as it's asynchronous it's only down not up. We are jsut about to move over to BT for a 10K (inc VAT) Leased line, 10Mb in both directions.. We're moving away from RM as they couldn't match the price (or get near it) so I'm loosing my external filtering but we have our own inhouse. Just means that i have to rely on belt rather than belt and braces filtering.

I go with the below. It seems to work OK for me. For script to run on computers use Loopback processing in Merge Mode That would allow you to apply a script to a Computer Account but using the User section of the policy. To set it up what you need to do is: 1. Create a Group Policy with the Loopback Policy enabled: Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> System --> Group Policy User Group Policy loopback processing mode: Enabled & Merge 2. Create a Group Policy attached to the OU containing the computer account with the script in the: User Configuration --> Windows Settings --> Scripts Logon --> printers.vbs. The Replace operation stops all other User based policies applying there and only uses those that would apply to the Computer OU. The Merge operation uses the normal User based policies as well, but any policies set on the Computer OU take precedence. No what I am saying is the new news reports failed to quantify exaclty what had happened, at least the reports I saw. They just made it sould like, "people can't vote, it's a national outrage, someone must be shot!!". I didn't see a single person say how long they had been there and if the fault lay with the polling station or people leave it to the last minute. I did hear a couple of stories this morning about problem's with student and the electoral role and one station that ran out of polling cards. These faults are the fault of the people running the election and willl need to be addressed. I didn't see a single person interviewed who said "hmm maybe I should have got here before 9:45 pm."

Oops. yes forgot to mention it's XP SP3 clients. @dan I could put seperate policies onto the Classroom PC's with a longer timeout. Don't have a screensaver on the PC's contemplated it. I just use it as a stick for those that don't lock/logoff when they leave. The think is that the teacher machines need a timeout of about 1hr in case they've left stuff on screen or are showing DVD's. The pupils and the PC's only need 5 minutes as I don't need the machines on all the time. I suppose if the asnwer is "XP does whatever it want's and makes it up as it goes along" I'll have to alter the PC timeout. I was hoping there was an easy answer. Goooo Windows!!
