So concerned about some confilctiong policies I disable policy inheritacne on my test OU. I disable my test GPO and create a new one. remove all templates appart from the internet ADM file. Only configure the "Configure new tab" setting and try that. And instead of the home page I get a blank page. I am now very cross and frustrated. Out of curiousity, when I use Preferences to configure IE8 the page for configuring Tabs is the same as the IE7 page. Is this normal?

There the ADM files as there sitting on my 2K3 Domain controller. Additional update. I had deleted then put back in my preference settings. After I deleted then and still when I put the preferences back it now decides to start displaying a BLANK PAGE every time! Even when I set the preferences to show home page rather than blank page!

Just to resurect this a little (sorry) how do I modify the ADM template so that search suggestions are enabled.

I'm using the Policy settings. (the IE 8 preferences don't have the tabbed page behaviour thing). I've fixed the drop down arrow but I did it before lunch and now I can't remember what I changed to do it! It's the tab behaviour that's more pressing for me. Especially as I think I've set it correctly but it doesn't effect!

I'm just looking into deploying IE8 in our organisation and I am currently playing with the GP settings. My problem is that if I set the key "Configure new tab page default behaviour" and set it to "Hpme Page" when I log in and open a new tab I get the new tab page. Setting the behaviour to "blank" to test performed in exactly the same way. I know my policy is applying as other changes I make are applied. Help. P.S. Does anyone know which setting disables the drop down arrow next to the search box. I seem to have done this accidentally and need to turn it back on. I'll find it but if anyone knew it might save me some time. Cheers.

:getmecoat: Yes I've just looked and they seem to be there... I'd swear blind that they weren't there when I checked after I installed the RSAT a couple of months ago. Now if we could have an "Is Idiot" button next to the "Thanks" button for me to click.

I had a question for you 2K8 R2 server users. I'm actually using 2k3 server and Win7/RSAT to set group policy preferences and whilst it works OK I have a slight problem. If I create an IE Preference it only allows me to set IE6 and IE7 settings. This is a bit of a problem as IE8 is now out. Can you create IE8 preferences in 2K8R2 servers? Is there a way to do it for my setup (I have IE8 on the servers and on my workstation)? Am I missing something? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd367850(WS.10).aspx#BKMK_IE8 Tells me that it should be in EITHER 2K8R2 or Win7 RSAT. I have the latter but no preference items for IE8

That's my password "recovery" software of choice too. Works fine. Use it to blank the appropiate passowrd and log in freely.

This looks a little what I MOST CERTAINLY DIDN'T DO AND DID NOT PHONE CAPITA TO GET THIER HELP WITH WHAT I DIDN'T DO! Have you unzipped the file you were sent and applied the upgrade zip file within? Or are you trying to use the file you were E-mailed P.S. Looking at the JPG do you mean DBUpgrade not BD Attach?

Well it does appear that using a small BMP image has speeded up my login's and the reliability of the background load. Yet I don't understand WHY this happens. Has anyone specified a jpg background and had it work smoothly?

Thanks, I'll let you know if I can't figure out why my problem is occuring. You did give me an interesting thought with your line about "We simply have the .bmp file (which it has to be) stored on a share". New Image is a JPG file. (only 500K). Looking in the Group Policy editor I found this description under the description for User Config > Admin Templates > Desktop > Active Desktop > Allow only bitmapped wallpaper Permits only bitmap images for wallpaper. This setting limits the desktop background ("wallpaper") to bitmap (.bmp) files. If users select files with other image formats, such as JPEG, GIF, PNG, or HTML, through the Browse button on the Desktop tab, the wallpaper does not load. Files that are autoconverted to a .bmp format, such as JPEG, GIF, and PNG, can be set as Wallpaper by right-clicking the image and selecting "Set as Wallpaper". Also, see the "Active Desktop Wallpaper" and the "Prevent changing wallpaper" (in User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Display) settings. There is an implication that the Active Desktop is converting my JPG's into Bitmaps for the purposes of the background. When I tried saving my image as a BMP file it rocked in at 26Mb!!! Which might explain the slow load of the desktop Icons I have suddenly started seeing and why the wallpaper doesn't display properly. Assuming this is the case then I have to ask "Why is it doing any file conversion when it should be able to display the jpg, especially when it quickly loads it during the login"? and "How the heck do I make it play nice"?

Oh I've had to "Turn off Classic Shell" and "Enable Active Desktop" as well in GP to get it to work (obviously)

A few found out how to turn it on then kept doing it for no other reason than to anoy those who didn't know how to turn it off. I disable the short cut as a matter of standard on all new images.

Right, I finally got somewhere with this and I thought I had it all working. Tested it on a number of computers and it all looked good. Enabled it for my organisation and I hit a random problem. The destop seems to apply OK during the load of personal settings during the login. The it brings up the task bar then refreshes and loads the Icons. When it loads the icons load the background goes wrong. (see attached PDF). The problem is that it seems to do this at random with no pattern to it. It works fine for a student on one computer then they move to a differnet room and it goes wrong. I saw it fail on a computer that 20 minutes before had had a student on it and using it fine. It did go wrong a little in my initial testing but I thought it wa due to it being loaded from the network. I copied the file locally and it seemed to work fine. The images is being shrunk by the computer but it is in the correct proportions. background Issue.pdf

You can configure it in Group Policy Preferences as well if you don't want to create cutom ADM's

OK First off "What the heck"? I've got a couple of computers that have developed a random fault. When I go into IE it works fine, search on google, open pages etc. However when anything tries to open a new window/tab or I right click and do "open in new window/tab" it opens a blank page then hangs trying to load the page. Any page. If I stop the load and hit refresh it loads the pages. If I click on a link and go to the page it loads the page. it's when I tries to open a new window/tab from a link. So why?

OK, so not quite "educational" but I'm looking for some software that I can use to scan pupil laptop hard disks and flash memory sticks looking for stuff they've deleted. Partly to help them when they are stupid, partly to catch them if they are being naughty. I don't mind paying but sub £50. Any suggestions?

Funny you you should say that... apparently it's so parent's don't think that by failing to follow correct guidelines we are failing in education! :eek:Would anyone really not send their child to a school as they don't use comma's on their addresses. I spent some time messing with Word (Basically it's a standard mail merge using SIMS as the data source). Thanks to those clever boffin's at MS I think I can get it to work (in part as you mentioned). Doesn't stop it being more time consuimg and difficult for the less IT literate. Aslo all the information I have found points to modern business letters being contsructed using "open punctuation" where the minimum is used.

well I was hoping for a slightly different response but oh well... the problem with mail merging is where there are a different number of lines in the adddress, e.g. address 1 and address 2 and sometimes address two is blank. blocking the spaces and the extra commas is a awkward. add in that we need the contry on sme addresses but not uk ones its extra complicstions thst i dont think are so easilly resolved. ive seen some stuff on open punctuation i need ro look at. ots just a paiin that this has come out of nowhere and i'm just trying to get our admin staff out of using maintained lists and into direct data exports from our database!
