I have actually binned websense over this exact issue. Basically Websense couldn't guarantee that it would work on 64 bit OS. Every other company said their apps "it will work but only as a 32bit app". Websense said no!. IJust be aware you need to be VERY carefull! Websense allowed be to renew last christmas (subscription up in March) to beat the VAT increase and websense's own price hike. When I found out about the 64bit issue I asked if I could cancel and have my money back for the 2010/11 subscription a month before it was due to commence. Websense said no and gave me what I consider to be a load of rubbish about the american accountancy system as to why I can't have my money back! They "gratiuously" offered a 6 months free though. So I've had to pay for next year, for something that may or may not work and may or may not be supported. To quote websense with regard to 64 bit, "unccertified deployments" “Websense will use commercially reasonable efforts to investigate potential issues with Websense software running together with these non-certified configurations. As part of the investigation, Websense may require the issue to be reproduced by the customer independently to isolate the issue from the non-certified configuration. Where issues are confirmed to be unrelated to the non-certified configuration, Websense will support its software in a manner that is consistent with support provided on Websense certified configurations. Where ssues are known or proven to be directly related to the non-certified configuration, Websense will require the customer to migrate to a certified configuration, as listed in the certified product matrix. “ So websense is gone and I have massively negative feelings towards them and wouldn't recomend them!

Yet it seems odly random. For example I sent my techie out to do some work in one of our suites yesterdays. My AV software blocks and logs any exe files on the network (as I've only just installed R2 and haven't got it doing that). In the logs sometime is blocks h:\*.exe name and sometimes it blocke h:\username\*.exe. So sometimes his H: is mapped correctly and sometimes it isn't.

I notice an odd problem today. As far as I can tell it's a bit random and I wondered if anyone else had come accross it. XP clients, in the profile their home drive is mapped to h: and \\servername\sharename$\username. Also "My Documents" is redirected to the users home drive. When I click on My document it opens their area. When I clicked on H it opened up \\servername\sharename$ Seemed a bit random as it didn't happen on all machines and I looked at a couple of teacher accounts and some did this and some didn't. It did it for me on an XP machine but I think my Win7 is OK.

Because apparently.. "I use my [insert generic webmail] here for [some important school activity] (even though I am provided with a school E-mail account" - Multiple un-named staff members We do allow staff to access their webmail however I did point out when the oldweb filtering went wappy that I am only required to have the school one working. If the external one doesn't work then I may get round to looking at it but I'm not going to rush. It does depend on the school and I'd quite like to block it as some are as bad as the kids for being on it during work time.

Sorry to thread-jack but in my IE policy I've set it to go to home page when you open a new tab. In practice IE then ignore's this setting and goes to the new tab page. Anyone else had this problem?

Well that's a load of rubbish. I have been talking to their tech support (after me sending them a load of screen dumps) who suggested that the netbios version of the domian name is not what I think it is and they have suggested what I put in. Also that I make sure I use the "administrator" account without and special characters, well given I've got a complex secure password why would I make it less secure!!! Do you have a reference to it not supporting 2k8 R2 server boxes or is it annecdotal based on what you've got to work? Just curious so when I e-mail buffalo and tell them off! Actually I worked out how to get Acronis to write to it today and as I only need it for my servers to back up to disk I don't NEED it to connect to the domain but I thought it would be nice.

So I'm going with this here as I'm wondering if it's an issue with the server rahter than anything else. I've just bought a Buffalo Linkstation Duo NAS. The firmware is up to date so in theory I should be able to join the AD domain... Well I can't. It's on the network OK and I can access it normall. When I try and join it to the domain it tells me that it "Failed to Join Active Directory Domain. Please check Active Directory Domain setting information, Administrator user name and password. Also, makes sure that you network settings are correct" I've double checked everything, I can ping the domain, the servers are there, the time on the servers and device are the same yet still it won't connect. I've even tried creating the account first then "trusting for delagation" as per some trouble shooting I found. What it will do is create a computer account for itself in AD when it tries to join so it seems to be, at least in part, communicating with the domain. I can also "Join an NT domain" where it connects, picks up the groups then fails to let me connect to the shares. So, anyone else got a Buffalo Link Station on their domain? How easy was it?

I'll let you know when the pupil's come back on the 20th. Seems OK. I've implimented it and it looks OK. My home dirve now displays properly, though I suspect I won't know whether it works or not until somone gets close to their quota limit. As I've quadroupled the pupil's storage limit that may take a while.

Tom, Not got one yet. no engineers free to take my call. Plus I've been out the office so they will have struggled to call me back. I'm fully up to date however and, having just experienceds the same problem on two of my servers yet managed to get it to work on a third server I think I know what the problem is.... I've got the number of concurrent sessions set to 1. And it's only me that wanders around logging in lots of places it would only have been me that would have noticed. So assuming that that's the case is there a way to keep the concurrent logins to 1 for the staff/students groups but have unlimited logins for domain admins?

Whilst I have just E-mailed their Tech support I was wondering if anyone had had the same problem I am having. I've got a smoothwalll box using NTLM identification and it all works OK. The only problem seem to be experienced by me on my Win 7 box where occasionally I am prompted to log back into the decvice (windows login box). no other people have menioned this issue though they all use XP machines. Anyone else seen this?

You get today's gold star! Cheers for that. Yes I had created the Quota's using FSRM. When I created it the old way it reported correctly for my XP clients. I take it from the article that you posted that if I'm using 7 then it won't be a problem. Any downside you can forsee to me setting both quota's. I like the reporting with FSRM where it E-mails the users telling them about duplicate and large files.

I could have sworn that my 2K3 server only showed the quota limit...

I've set my quota's up on my new shiney 2K8 R2 server but I'm having a problem. The quota's seem to be enforcing however when I log in a as a user and look at the properties of their home area I see the Total Disk Usage/Free space for the whole disk their area's sit on rahter than the Quota Limit/Space used by user as was the case for my 2K3 servers. Why and how do I sort it so that it only shows how much space they are taking up and their quota limit?

Yep. All OK as far as I can tell. Would you just go into "Manage server" and remove the role? Is there anything else I need to be looking out for or a differnet way of doing things?

Hi all, so I've spent the last few days migrating my DC's to new 2k8 R2 servers and demoting my old ones. Everyting looks alright, all the roles are migrated across to the new servers and they are now running AD and DNS. My problem is that the old servers still seem to be running (my AD integrated) DNS. Does anyone have any advice about stopping them doing that? i.e can I just stop the DNS service on them? IS there anything else I need to do or look out for?

+1 for DSADD here. Well in 2003 anyway but I'm assuming it's in 2008 as otherwise it's going to make the lovely spreadsheet I've got written that takes an output from our MIS and creates the script to add the new users to my domain, create the folders and us "subinacl" to secure the folders.

But what if I wanted to switch on my locked down the internet 30 seconds before school! You mean I CANT do that?!??!? :D I got told Auth3 was about 3 weeks away.

I remember noticing a while ago that Win 2K8/R2 comes with a physical and a virtual license in one. Thus allowing you to have a vitual and physical machine. Is this correct? If so my question is do these have to be on the same server? For example, Can I have my physical Win 2K8R2 server then use the virtual licence so set up a Virtual test network on a different machine? You know as I actually write this I'm suspecting the answer is "no" as it would lead to a 2 for 1 situation and that it's intended to be you install Server on a physical device, then install your virtualization product of choice on and then install the servers on that machine. But I thought I'd still ask the question. I was trying to avoid buying another licence in order to have a test network but if I have to I have to (yes I could use the Eval but then I'd have to set everything up every half year)

Good. Having said that the last mike that I used (which wasn't that good) I told the external examiners to stay close to the mic and he kept leaning back when I was there! Now I just have to explain to the Bursar WHY I am buying SingStar mic's

This seems OK. Though I note that you do have to be reasonably close to the mike, is this a problem for your student's examiners?

Of course the problem is when they don't know what they need to know! Or they don't beleive that they need to know anything about a certain product. Someone told me "Why should I learn how to use Excel I don't need use it". Right after I gave them a spreadsheet of figures they asked for (which I might not have sorted and totaled just to make apoint ) and right before the budget request forms came out (which our accountant sends out as excel spreadsheets - Guess who's didn't come back in excel..)

We use MDaemon here. It's a full Mail aServer but has a nice web interface for the pupils and staff to use with a familiar look.... No need of outlookand it works on any client machine without any configuration as it's all web bassed. Those staff with offices who do use Outlook make use of the Outlook connector to access the shared folders/contact list. Price isn't too bad. Especially when you ring them and tell them you are a school and get the education pricing. Exchange has a web access component but then you need to install Exchange to get it.

So I've been asked to look into setting up Skype in the boarding houses here at school. My brief is: "To allow the students to use Skype in a Private Public location, possible with a handset" (Yes you have read that correctly). Sooo.... Does anyone allow the use of Skype in school for the pupils? Any problems occured, anything I should be weary of (other than the fact it's going to hog bandwidth and we can't monitor it and god knows what pupils are going to be getting up to). Any specific policies/AUP been needed? My initial thoughts are that mybe it needs to be on a timed access but I wondered if anyone else had wandered into this minefield and have you gotten through it without having your legs blown off?
