I and our head of DT would like one but we can't acuallly justify it... Personallly I use MS Publisher. Tell it how big I want the Image, How bit the paper is and away I go. Some assembly is required but it's never too much of a problem

Were not so much "subletting" I don't think as she is actually connecting to our network. I suppose that it depends on where you define subletting. I do like your other points though, especially 1 and 5. I can also hide behind "you can't join home editions of XP and Vista to a domain*, and without joining the domain my internet filtering is (hopefully) going to stop you doing much". * Whilst google tells me you can do it through some cheating, it's a bit of a mess and a real "get around" rahter than a solution. Besides I feel no need to mention it.

I've just had a bit of an odd question that I'm not happy with and need some advice. One of our resident members of staff has a network point in her house (used to be used as her work office, anyway). She wants to "rent" the socket from the school and use it for her home computer for her personal use. Now I'm not too happy with the idea, both on principle we haven't done anthing like this for anyone else and for technical reasons (without joining the domain my internet filtering is going to tell her to get stuffed). Are there any leagal issues I should be aware of? I.e. them having illigal software or downloading stuff? What other good reasons are there why I should say "no" (so when she goes over my head to the Bursar I've got some arguments)

Depending on how nasty it is; Disable system protection look in the registry for random things staring up - HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run\ and check what everthing is on google. Make a note of any dodgy files, find them and delete them (use task manager to terminate processes if necessary) Delete registry keys editing the registry incorrectly can totally knacker your computer. It's a bit rough but it's a general principle. Software like AdAware and SpyBot can help as well.

But then how do they learn? Stick a quota on and then show them how to organise their work when they run out of space...

last year was the last year of T4 for us we are now T6 all the way! I hope... Now we just need to train the teachers how to get their timetables...

We download the results electronically and upload them into SIMS it all works fine except that it takes about 10 minutes to import each file. SIMS will run the import though then stall on a couple of records then get going again then stall so it takes time. If I run the import on the server then it takes about 30 seconds per file and, bar any results bassed errors, the import works fine.

But then they still exist in SIMS (and Cover 7????). So renaming them might be the best thing to do to stop confusing the hard of thinking...?

I got a call from their tech support needing the MAC of the router so that's probaly why. There tech support is a bit of a pain. When I took it out I ended up with three routers and when I had a problem initially I had an argument with the guy on the end of the phone who told me that I didn't have broadband. Why would I make up such a preposterious lie? Having said that I don't really have a problem with it it's OK for the money though I only have bog standard ADSL MAX, I think I'm getting about 6Mb.

Yes, well I kind of thought that might be the case but: 1: Why have a delete button 2: Would have hoped that there was a "deactivate" much like the UDF's 3: Why have Capita told me it's to do with the DPA? And given that I suggested the answer about being linked to history and they didn't even reference it, just blamed the DPA I got curious.

PM'd you. Thanks for having a look. It seems odd that there is no way to delete the rooms (or no an easy one) or at least render the room inactive, much in the same way you can with UDF's. It does seem that we, like Sylv3r are storing obsolete and incorrect data which is surely one of the MAJOR "no no's" of databases.

I realise I may be about to massivly display my ignorance but I'm going to press on. Just been talking to Capita as I want to remove some classrooms from SIMS (the rooms have either been removed or renamed and our timetabler has created new rooms rather than rename them ). Apparently you can't because; The reason for not being able to delete rooms from SIMS.net relates to issues within the Data Protection Act. What reason in the DPA prevents me removing rooms? I was expecting some kind of issue with SIMS needing to know all rooms that ever existed because of past timetables but not blaming it on the DPA... any ideas?

Apparently there is some things in V 1.2 that is meant to speed thigns up but I haven't seen anything that says when it's out. We have the same problem (and with the rubber) and we are running the latest versions, we had no problem's before. I haven't really got anywhere with technical support but then being totally honest part of the problem is with my teaching staff who don't do anything when I give them a list of troubleshooting things to go through and then they don't bother and just complain it's still slow.

Yeah... I feared that was the case. I just hoped there was a "cleaner" solution. PluI was trying to minimise the amount of time the comptuers are on unnecessarliy overnight without accidentally shutting them down when they are updating. Thus i was hoping there was a way for the computer to "shutdown after updating". Oh well...

Been there, had that problem, had to buy decent switches at both ends! I've currently got some media converters plugged into switches with spare GBIC slots that I'd love replace with fibre modules (should reduce power consumption and the number of sockets used, plus they only run at 100Mb). The problem is that I've got 1 computer on the other end of each link and can't justify the cost of a switch and GBIC module at the other end! Can I get a media converter to work with the GBIC can I heck. Part of the problem might be that I my current converters don't work with anything other than themselves (some Planet/LineOne ) and I don't want to keep buying random convertes to see what works... In short - hate the smegging things and as soon as I can get rid off them I will!

As long as all the setting point to the correct server I wouldn't have thought there'd be a problem. Might be prudent not to use DCHP on your test net if there's any connection to your main network.

Simple question; when I schedule an install with WSUS can get a comptuer so shutdown after installing the updates? i.e. not re-start, and to shutdown if the updates don't require a re-start.

Not sure it matters either way does it as long as the person in question understands what they are doing and how their groups work (and presumably all the students in the same year are in the same group). For reference however I personally feel that year of entry is better. But I do have to "Back Date" those who enter in the Lower 6th or any other middle year in the school.

Just so you know. If you move/copy the folders on the same drive they will keep their ACL's. If you move them to a different drive you will loose the ACL's

Ok. First off what flavour of server are you running? I would start by craeting a folder (called "students2010" for want on a better name) on the server and moving all the student's own home directories into it. I would have this on it's own partition so that you can enable disk quota's without effecting anything else. Share the student2010 folder with whatever name you want but make sure that you put the dollar ($) as the last character to hide it so that people cant browse to it. (If you are using 2003 server change the share permissions so that your uses have at least "change" permissions as the default is read only) Set the permissions on the folder so that only domain admins and the system have access. Now I can't remember if some of the following commands are in 2000 server but if not they should be downloadable from microsoft's website. It also requires a little bit of scripting skill, though not much. A list of users/folders and some Excel skill will allow you to create some batch files very quickly to do this in baulk. use the windows command "subinacl" to set the folders permissions for each user. Approximate syntax: subinacl /file e:\students2010\ /grant=\=c Use the windows command "dsmod" to change the users home directory (I THINK this it 2003 only) Approximate syntax: dsmod user "CN=Don Funk,CN=Users,DC=Contoso,DC=Com" -hmdir \\ Check this and do some reading on the command before using it. Then use GP to re-direct the MyDocuments to the users home folder.

@SYNACK OK thanks for that. After giving me the same error (invaled character in start menu) during the scripted uninstall when I restarted the computer it had uninstalled! Reinstalled Office and it let me put SP2 on! Gooooooooooo Microsoft! Thanks for you help on a problem that really shouldn't have been.

Cheers for that. I've tried the scriped fix which failed and I'm now not sure what state the machine is in so I'm going to going to wipe it. Of marginal frustration is that a couple of this "batch" or computers have installed SP2. And I've just been looking at one that has failed lots of times then suddenly installed SP2! Grrrr.....
