Hi all I'm after a bit of advice or recommendations please. Last year I replaced a few old 3Com switches with '3Com Baseline switch 2952 SFP Plus' switches. This was to enable our fibre backbone to be expanded. All our switches are 3Com. I need to replace the last 2 this year but can't get hold of the above ones anymore because HP have taken over 3Com. Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative, I know the HP Procurves are an obvious choice but a bit expensive on a fairly limited budget.

I'll go along with Xibo too. Probably a bit more involved in updating it than some of the shiny web browser based ones but certainly does the job. Once you are used to it you'll sail through changes.

We created a seperate ssid for them to use but when DHCP allocated an IP address internal security blocked them for internet access because they weren't part of the network. I allocated a range of IP addresses that they could use which would give them the same internet permissions as they get in school but without actually joining the network. They then have to allocate one of these addresses to their PC/MAC manually instead of DHCP to get internet access. If they try to allocate an address outside of the range they get the same effect as with DHCP.

We have a terminal server here and up to now it has been working fine. Today we switched over to our new fibre connection and now it isn't. Could anyone explain if there is an external IP address allocated somewhere and where it is located so that I can change it from our old adsl IP to our new fibre IP addess please.

The editing software came with the camera (HD Writer AE 2.1), graphics Intel G41 express chipset. Main board Intel core duo 2 @ 2500mhz with 2 gb of ram.

We bought a Panasonic HDC-HS700 last year and it's the business. Great picture quality, sound quality is pretty good even outdoors over a distance. It has a 240gb hard drive plus an SD card socket for cards upto 64gb. Various outputs for display including HDMI. It also comes with a quick and easy editing package for editing all you films. It may cost a bit more than others but worth it in the long run. This is an AVCHD camcorder but the film gets run and produced on a bog standard PC with onboard graphics. It also takes really good stills while you are filming.

I have just tried to put SP 2 on a vista machine but when it boots up it says it didn't install and reverts changes back to before. The trouble is, it does this every time I logon. How can I stop it trying to install and revert back every time. I looked in Control panel/programs but couldn't see it in there. Anyone got any ideas, it's driving me nuts evertyime I do a restart.

The authentication is via pre shared key (PSK2). These are coded into every laptop so the users don't have to put them in every time. This works for a majority of them but for a few it doesn't despite being set up indentically. We have 2 WLAN's. One for students and one for teachers. The teachers one has more access than the student one. These are stacked so that if it can't find one the it will revert to the other. I've tried swapping from one to the other and this sometimes works with the laptops that drop out after 5 mins but not the ones that don't think they can see any wireless networks.

How can 3 identical laptops with identical builds act completely differently? I had 3 in class today, none of them would logon to the network initially. The first one logged on locally and once the wireless had kicked in, connected to the wireless network straight away. This then could log off and back onto the network fine. The second one logged on locally, the same thing happened as the first but then dropped out and sat there acquiring and address forever more. The last one logged on locally and couldn't see any wireless networks, although when you passed you curser over the wireless symbol it said that it had an excellent signal from our wireless network. All laptops have dedicated IP addresses which are reserved in DHCP so no-one else can use them. They all use the windows wireless facility with windows zero configuration on. I've tried letting DHCP allocate ip's but it doesn't make any difference. The wireless seems slow to kick in on these because on most of them, after they have powered up and stood for a minute or 2, logon to the network fine. Can anyone shed any light on this problem please before I throw half a laptop trolley through the window.

Can you allocate a range of IP addresses in your firewall then give the Kindles those addresses. We do this with guest laptops/iphones etc. That way they can use the wireless network to get out to the internet but not actually touch or join your main network and you can still keep some sort of control over what is accessed.

Good news. I'll keep this copy for if I ever find the time to play with Xenserver.

I had downloaded an image of 5.6.1 fp1. I've just tried to burn it to CD and it seems to work. I tested it in an old PC and it started to boot OK. PM me your address and I bung it in the post for you.

It looks like I might be able to do this through the wireless admin config. I was looking in the wrong place. I'd looked at MAC Filtering but that was for specific allowing MAC addresses. I've found the disable client function that looks like it will do the job. DHCP runs from Server 2003.

Is it possible to bar a PC\Laptop from a wireless system? We have a Cisco wireless network here and I want to block a particular machine from connecting through it. This machine has the passkey but I don't want to have to change this because it means every other machine that connects will have to change their key. I was hoping that I could somehow block it using its mac address. I can't seem to find anything relevant in the online help, inless I'm phrasing the search wrong.

Thanks for your replies unfortunately neither of these seemed to work. I've gone back a configuration and this now works again. I'll have to come forward one update at a time to see which one is causing me the problem.

Hi I have just installed Windows 7 on a laptop. It all built fine and was running OK until it did some updates now the screen won't come on unless in safe mode. I've tried updating drivers and changing screen resolutions but these haven't made any difference. Has anyone else had this problem and do you have a solution?

I need a bit of advice please. I have tried setting up Live@EDU which went fine until I needed to confirm ownwership of a test domain I'd set up to play with. Then I couldn't find anyway to confirm this. I used DYNDNS and created a free account/domain which I then allocated to Live@EDU. Couldn't work out where to put the CNAME record Live@EDU provided. I got fed up trying to find out how with no success so I've deleted them. Has anyone setup a free domain for testing in this way, if so who with and could you point me to some info on how please. Preferably with explanations on registration and confirmation in Live@EDU.

I totally agree with M25man. Theres a school at the end of my road and 3 kids got mugged last Friday morning on their way into school. It's a novelty coming to the school where I work and the pupils are well mannered and polite not like some of the scum up and down my road. If you have the misfortune to go in there you have to wade through a sea of spit and spliff butts.

You could put the box on the wall outside the hall, just under the eaves is ideal, so long as it is well out of reach of the pupils. I believe that a north or north west facing wall is preferable, although I have them in different spots and facing various directions and if the bird likes it then it will nest in it no matter what. But I think you'd be lucky if you got anything nesting in the first year. If it's a box with a hole then I'd expect to get something like Blue or Great tits or maybe Wrens initially. If its half open you maybe luck and get Robins. Sparrows are more communal and prefer to nest in groups.

The problem now doesn't appear to be with Word, it appears to be with the access point that the laptop is connecting through. I took the laptop to our office and connected wirelessly through another AP and it printed fine to the same printer. I thought that this might just have been due to me logging on as administrator but when I moved back to the staffroom and tried to print again the laptop had connected through a different AP and wouldn't print. The OS for the laptop is XP SP3, the printer is networked on a Server 2003 OS. Any ideas about that.

I have a problem with a couple of laptops. When they try to print a document from Word it fails saying that the print drivers have to be reinstalled or the printer is off etc. Sometimes if you copy the text from said document and paste it into a new blank one it will print. If you go to the printer properties and print a test page, it prints fine every time. Has anyone else had a similar problem? and better still have a solution. My next step is to try re-installing word unless there is another answer.

I generally use either Any Video Converter, Freemake Video Converter or Prism Video Converter( although this one usually comes as a trial but a full one). They all do FLV files.
