Right. Ive had a play, program seems alright, but any changes i make i need to wack everything out manually. Plus, every computer has different drive setups, some labs have card readers for example, and all have virtual CD roms, so banning 'h:' for example will mess up some programs. Is there a way/another app, to do this via GP? So that its only applied to the kids/staff and not admins too? We do have NSS, which can do 90% of what we want to do, but it cant stop users running programs off their home drive unfortunatelly. And while im happy keeping it running 24/7, its not the most stable of programs for me unfortunatelly. Thanks. .

Interesting app that looks ideal. Questions i couldnt gather from the manual though: 1 - How can this be rolled out to every computer on the network without inputting the names of every computer? 2 - Is the app itself invisible to the user? As the manual mentions an applet that can be viewed in CP. Asuming CP access is disabled via GPO, i asume that the app doesnt appear anywhere else? Thanks. .

Hi. Can anyone tell me of a method i can use that'll stop the users running any *.exe, *.bat, *.cmd, etc; files that run from specific places? For example, i'd like to stop them running things off their home directory, flash drives, physical optical drives (not virtual ones though). Any ideas? Thanks in advance all. .

Hmm. So the better option would be the rackmounted stuff? Tbh, the blades are very tempting, but they do seem a little too expensive for what they offer. I could cut out a large bulk of the rack mount costs by dropping the storage available on it, leaving me with a much larger budget for the smaller things.

Chekay though HP are, i see the 8 port jobbo and think "cool, £400 for a 8 port KVM with IP". They neglect to specify that you need a further grands worth of accessories for it to actually work! lol..

Hi. Im currentely deciding what direction to go in regards to server configuration/setup. I do want a minimum, disregarding all our old servers which will do other tasks: 2 Domain controllers for redundancy 1 file server 1 backup file server. Now, after some quick checking, over both of our networks, the total user data storage is under 200Gb, suprisingly. With that in mind, plus the fact we have 2x 1Tb NASes, im a little bit stuck for what to do in regards to the new networks servers. The three ideas/rough prices we've got are: Rackmounted: DC = 2x DL360s. Quad, 4Gb & 3x76Gb SAS RAID5. FS = 1x DL360. Quad. 4Gb, 3x76Gb, MSA60 & 12x146Gb = 1752Gb, RAID5. BackupFS = 1x DL360. Quad. 4Gb, 3x76Gb, MSA60 & 8x500Gb SAS = 4000Gb, RAID5. Rough price of £11,600. Hybrid: C7000+accessories (GigE, PSU,Fan) DC: 2x BL460c. Quad, 4Gb, 2x76Gb FS: BL460c. Quad, 4Gb, 2x146Gb + Storage blade w/ 6x146Gb = 876Gb RAID5. BackupFS = 1x DL360. Quad. 4Gb, 3x76Gb, MSA60 & 8x500Gb SAS = 4000Gb, RAID5. The Blades would be far more power efficient, easyier to manage (in theory), run cooler, take up less space, etc; BUT they cost more. The rackmount offers far more bang for buck in regards to storage space, but is the storage space needed, considering current usage is under 200Gb on both networks? The hybrid is a nice median between the two as it offers the advantages of both, with the v.large storage on the backup file server allowing for alot of backups compared with the backup file server on the Blade setup. Thoughts, advice and opinions are more than welcome. .

Odd. I enabled that, but right clicking only works on menu's? And im 100% certain that the right click on menu's option is the one i selected?

Bit of a dumb question on my part, as i probably know this already but its escaped me at the moment: How are you giving them local admin rights, or are you adding them on each workstation manually?

Just a thought. We have 10d running on our current curric DC, and Veritas 10d on our admin DC. Out of all the servers listed, the only ones that would need backing up really would be the Sim SQL and the file server one. Correct? So, how many licences/what type am i likely to need. All i need to do now to finalise my costing for sumittal is the backup software costs, UPS advice/costs and KVM advice/costs. Thanks in advance all.

Got a bit further. Still not working though. Ive setup two user accounts. One called "resetpassword" thats a normal user, set to load IE as the GUI as specified in the readme. The other is a domain admin called "resetpasswordadmin". I can load the first interface logged in as my test pupil, with the address: "http://server:81/register/register.asp". Problem is there that the 'username' box appears blank, but everything goes through without error. If goto the reset page, enter the test pupil account that i previously registered, to which it says that the user isnt registered? So i go back to the register page, and aparentely its already registered!? Is there a more indepth install guide around anywhere? Because while the 'quick install one' is there, half the information on it is incorrect in my case, running the IIS manager that comes with R2. So im having to wing half of it, guessing as i go along. Just to check, the two accounts ive setup, the standard user one is for....kiosks? And the domain admin one is for the program itself to have access to change the passwords? If someone could help me get this working, it would be VERY much appriciated. .

For the KVM, ive been told that all the HP rackmount KVMs are IP based. Is that correct? As it appears cheap compared to the competition at under £500.

Not impressed tbh. I installed it on our IIS server. Made a staff level login for crawling. Gave it two places to crawl. Nothing but errors!? Plus, theres no 'search' interface for it for the staff. I was under the impression, perhaps wrongly, that i'd set it all up on the server, tell it where to search, then i could just drop an icon/shortcut in the staff areas called search, and that'd allow them to search. Instead, going to the url for it just brings up a vastly complex screen for the staff to use! and no obvious search faclility!? Am i doing something wrong here?

CCC Costs. Papercut Licence. Is there anything ive missed on that that you can think ok? *1 Im planning on turning the current 3 servers into a Sims/SQL Server, an ISA Proxy & a WSUS/IIS/App Deployment Storage/Print server. The Sims SQL will be dual CPU, 4Gb & 3x300Gb RAID5 & 73Gb for the OS. The WSUS/etc; server will be dual CPU, 4Gb, 3x300Gb + 36Gb for the OS. THe ISA Proxi will be a dual CPU, 4Gb, 2x300Gb RAID0 + 36Gb for the OS. Do those specs seem about right? *2 Im unsure about the server versions as well, will the standard versions do for what we need? (2x DC, 2x File, 1x IIS/WSUS, 1x ISA, 1xSims/SQL, 2xmodified NAS, 1xVirtual). *3 any recommendations on the KVM & UPS? Thanks everyone. .
