    I've worked with HP, Dell, Fujitsu and selfbuilt servers. I would choose HP everytime. HP's reliability and support are worthwhile paying that little bit extra for.

    What condition is the sunken PVC channel in? If its old and been moved around a lot as you mention, it may be tricky getting copper or fiber through it. Have you considered a wireless link?

    You won't get anywhere near that per page cost with a managed service. Best I have seen is 1.25p per colour page and that was a big RISO Comcolour (inkjet) printer. What you get with a managed service though is just that - they supply all toner and replacement parts on an 'on demand' basis. The newer models feed back to the supplier via the internet so you automatically get toner supplies or engineers on site without having to ring them.

    Install the free version of Papercut which allows you to monitor print usage and identify who is printing what, i.e. documents type, colour or mono, paper size, etc... We don't use desktop printers anymore, we have several multi-function photocopiers around school which we pay a fixed quarterly price for rental and service, then a per page cost for pages printed. This works out cheaper for us (although cheaper is still a lot of money given the amount printed!) I can PM you more details if you like.

    That's a good suggestion from Dave - even if you can't monitor SNMP locally, your LEA should be able to provide you with this data. Make sure you get a good sample across several full days to identify if there are any trends where usage is high. I've had issues in the past with dodgy WSUS updates maxing out the connection.

    Every school in Leeds is currently facing this situation as the current LEA service is coming to an end next year. This has forced people to look into this more closely and the biggest worry for most schools is feeding MIS data back to the LEA. Our LEA have suggested that a remote token system will be required at a fixed annual cost, however there seems to be some conflicting information out there as to the legalities surrounding this. You are absolutely correct, planning is critical and getting everything written down and documented properly will help you highlight any issues that need to be addressed. If the service you are getting (or not) really is that bad, then there must be other schools in your area who are also looking at alternatives - have you spoken to any of them?

    What you are wanting to achieve sounds simple enough, however it is likely to be anything but simple! There's all sorts of apps out there for this kind of thing and many schools have been there already so there is quite a bit of knowledge out there. We are looking to implement ipads later this year so I'm in the early stages of research at the moment. The one product that keeps coming up as being very capable is Meraki's systems manager. Its free, cloud based, and very comprehensive. Cisco Meraki - Cloud Managed Networks that Simply Work You'll also need to find out how to use Apple Configurator. This site gives a very good insight into how it works. What I've learned about apple configurator so far Hope that helps you a bit!

    Is the Hubsan X4 capable of carrying a camera? I'd like to try taking some aerial videos/photos - some of yours JAB1a earlier in this topic are amazing. If not the Hubsan X4, then whats the cheapest quad copter vable of carrying a camera - and which camera would be good to start with?

    The trouble with using a face plate behind the projector is that you'll be able to see all the plugs and cables that are connected to it, which could end up looking worse. You could consider having the cables come out of the wall above the false ceilng (assuming the new room has one - and most schools do) then all you would need is a short length of flexible trunking coming through a neat hole in the ceiling tile above the projector mount. I would take a good look at the mounts for the projectors you are considering and see if they have any form of cable management that you can use to minimise the amount of visible cables. Let me know if you want any photos of the mount that comes with the Epson EB-470.

    I use VGA, HDMI, and audio for the wall plate. You don't need a plate behind the projector, in fact I would discourage it. Often with new builds the cabling will be done by contractors so if you have specific requirements you need to get these in to them - it may already be too late? Or you could discus it with the site manager?

    I've been using Epson projectors recently. The EB-470 is very good. It comes with a wall mount which is excellent - one of the best I have seen in terms of adjustability once installed. It also comes with a 3 year lamp warranty and a 5 year hardware warranty which is pretty hard to beat at the moment. Especially when it costs less than £700 (if you shop around) The projected image is very bright, clear and has good colour reproduction. It also works with Epson's iProjection app which allows you to replicate your iPhone/iPad on the projector via wi-fi without any additional hardware. Combine that with a vision tech-connect amp and ceiling speakers and you have a very neat and professional install.

    How many printers have you got? I reserve IP addresses for our printers which are excluded from distribution by DHCP, but we currently only have 6 printers in school so its easy to manage. Everything else gets it IP from DHCP. Another possibility (if all your PCs are running Win 7 or above) might be to use an IPv6 scope for your PCs and IPv4 for your printers, but I've not tried it - just a thought...

    There isn't one simple answer to this question, and I suspect that ultimately your budget will be the deciding factor as to which way you go. @witch raises a good point that you must have a decent wireless infrastructure in place before considering any mobile devices - be it laptops or tablets. I've worked in lots of schools and they all have a different solution, based on their needs and how they use the ICT equipment available. In my current school we have over 700 pupils so have an ICT suite, a mini ICT suite, 3 laptop trolleys and a Fizzbook trolley. All are used regularly.
