Games publishers do get compensated, you buy a chair from a furniture maker, you have a chair. If you chose to sell it to someone else later the maker has still been paid for that chair. This pay per use stuff has been invented by the media companies - thanks Sony, BMG, Apple - where you buy a chair and they will let you sit in it but if you get up they take it back. With the games, stores should be paying a higher premium for rentable copies and also renting licence fees just like they do for DVDs based on the amount of rentals. The sole thing where I can see it being not smarmy WRT games is those with online content that requires maintenance, in that case the one off cost or even a small subscription for the on going service. Titles like Alan Wake were also fine as these soled for a lower initial cost (about 50%), the first chapter of four and a voucher for the second and if you liked it you could buy the last two separately totalling up to a standard full game cost. This licence thing is a big load of BS, sure, can't perform it, can't pass it off as your own work but you can pass the original off to someone else when you are done. Authors aren't so smarmy, they even had dens of state sponsored piracy that they called libraries. All these morally inept scholars would come and bask in the collected culture, sometimes even buying their own copies of works that they really liked. Media companies now are different, you need to buy it to try it out and if you don't like it too bad, what happened to civilisation where the shareing of knowledge and culture became some socially unacceptable harracy.

XP was rubbish on netbooks too, remember those dialogue boxes that you needed to hide the start bar or use the GPU zoom out to actually use. This is the same kind of kludge that is needed to get metro working with the GPU scaling registry key. I seem to remember that the big moan when moving to Vista/7 was that it was too pretty and lots of people wanted to go back to the Windows 2000 style that had been forced for a decacde. At least 8 had given up the BS and dropped 3D all together, even 3.1 had 'buttonised' buttons and borders for that progressed. That trend has been going mad with chromed over, brushed aluminium, reflected bouncing madness where there is much more decoration than content. Really, brushed aluminium . There is some special effects left in there like transparency and blending but it is going the other way making the content more important than the light show. I still like the transparency and desktop windows effects of 7 but flashing it up more for the next version could have just looked tacky, bouncing cubes and jumping icons of distraction. They wonder why people are distracted so easily, it could have been so much worse if they had just gone ape with their effects budget.

I wish they would just get it right to start with, perhaps they need to try and hire some of the secure computing people from Microsoft

Yea which is fine but it should also be able to live within its means. Ours does but it sounds like the ops install did not.

I thought it was supposed to be less RAM hungry than 2010 too. Our 2010 manages on 8GB, only a hundred or so users though.

They consider Windows an upgrade from OSX, if you want to run both (OSX and Win) you'll need SA though.

Ohh, this again, it was big a while ago, before WiFi was big. The concerns were microscopic particles of tonner in the air and ozone production from the fuser. I believe the solution was having those plants that process air well near them to fend off the evil technology deamons and get the villagers to put down their pitchforks. TBH the noise pollution from them is probably more damaging to users anyway.

Never mind, found a solution, It only likes applications so reference the interpreter directly ie: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /K "C:\Users\J\Desktop\test.bat" in a shortcut then you can pin that to the taskbar by dragging it on to it, just tested it here.

Is it taking some kind of parameter, can you chuck them in to the end of a shortcut? There does appear to be an exe, would this work? Irssi - The client of the future

Exactly, can be really decent if people give it a chance but most people won't give it the time of day and will wait for 9 as they made up their minds from the screenshots and a couple of days worth of use. There is some great stuff in there and the main drawbacks are the current lack of manageability for Metro.

We use it primarily to separate out the roles for better reliability. I like to keep printers on their own separate server because drivers are rubbish and can spew junk into memory of filesystems without warning - I have seen it happen many times - Brother are rubbish. It is also really handy to have a couple of DCs so that you can tear one down for updates or whatever while the users are still being served by the other. 'The movie goes on, and nobody knows the difference' .

We used to run stuff like that but moved from it a while ago for better redundancy. We also run other services in house like email and web filtering as well as our own websites. The closest setup we have is a 500 pupil school with one big server that has 50GB of RAM and 16 cores and 4TB of space that runs everything virtualised. We run WSUS, MDT, WDS, AV, Internal web server, Exchange, File and Print, AD, DNS, DHCP, Papercut, Proxy/FW. This works but is a nightmare for doing work on because you need to pull down the entire site just to run an update. The other schools are further down the line investment wise and have at least a couple of servers running virtualisation hosts, over time storage needs and performance needs increased so we added SANs to centralise the storage and make it easier long term to manage and upgrade. For reference we got an IBM SAS SAN for less than a couple of servers here however we pay about double what you do for servers.

Run it as a startup script and set the computername as . This will target it to the local computer.

As for deadspace, I need the screaming of undead amped in my 1200W surround system, on a big screen, in the dark, nothing else cuts it. GPU wise, sure they may be catching up to the 6 year old system that is about to be replaced but try current gen. Oh and iPhoney fanboys, I have had a smartphone since 2003, iPoo was not the start, my WM2003 phone had features not even thought of till 2008-10. Steve Jobs did not invent everything.

the internet here is that slow that update was still downloading when I posted, think a 56k modem shared between a country and you have NZ internet.
