  1. Can the box still communicate with the internet and the Windows servers? Do things like wbinfo -u, wbinfo -t etc from the terminal.
  2. I believe disabling IPv6 varies between versions. Google for "Ubuntu disable ipv6". But it will be similar to the procedures outlined in these: How-To: Disable IPV6 to speed up Internet. [Archive] - Ubuntu Forums How to Disable IPV6 in Ubuntu|Ubuntu Geek
  3. I would look in to migrating your current system to Zimbra - it's an enterprise level open-source email and collaboration suite. It has a fantastic web-based interface with global/shared address lists as well as many other great features. Accessed through a desktop front-end such as Mozilla Prism, you can even make it look and feel like a separate application to your end users.
  4. Anything out of the ordinary in the log files? /var/log/messages /var/log/squid/ - cache.log, error.log (or whatever else is there) Have you tried switching to just NTLM and getting rid of IDENT? Do you have IPv6 enabled? Having IPv6 enabled on IPv4-only networks can sometimes cause networking delays. EDIT: And how many child processes do you use for the NTLM auth process? I remember a long time ago we made this a large amount as we thought it would be better; but 5 was sufficient.

  6. And it should do too. It's nice when external bodies/people come in knowing little or nothing at all, and come to that very conclusion you received
  7. Thanks
  8. We all know how bad ITV are at dealing with TV voting
  9. The website FAQ states their reasoning for not having a "none" options: FAQ ... The Political Compass
  10. I see. Who was this initiated by - Becta or the Head? How/why were you chosen if it was Becta? I'm not trying to detract from what they said about your place at all; I'm just curious as to why this has come about (and further, to what purpose?) - I imagine there are lots of us on here "coping" (to varying levels) with poor budgets.
  11. What was the purpose of their visit?

  13. They'd find a way. Probably something along the lines of, "it's not on our self-appointed list of approved support partners."
  14. Cacti and/or Nagios.
  15. Pre-requisites: have common sense.
  16. 2 full time people, 1 half time person We prefer the top half so we at least have another pair of hands. Can't replace a motherboard with your feet
  17. RM CC3 network, 2.5 people, 350 workstations/laptops, 50 printers, 50 IWBs, 15-20 servers. Helpdesk usually hovers around 0-5 "in progress" tickets, during the day it can rise up to about 8 at a time submitted by our staff. However, we don't store long-term projects and installs in the helpdesk - it is purely for staff to request help.
  18. Hopefully within the next 6 months. I've not tested it with Server 2008 yet but it's on the cards.
  19. Exactly. From the reports I've read, Ashleigh Hall had no reason to think she was going to get into any trouble, so would have had no cause to use such a reporting feature. I'm of a mixed opinion of the CEOP reporting button. On one hand they claim they receive a lot of reports of abuse via it; but how many other people get into "situations" because they didn't feel the need to use it? I don't think installing it everywhere will be an instant solution to all the problems CEOP face. The real issue in the Ashleigh Hall case, from my point of view, is how Peter Chapman was allowed Internet access and how nobody knew where he was or what he was doing, given what was known about him previously. That is what could have prevented the tragedy - not a little button that Ashleigh may or may not have clicked.
  20. Mmmmmm honey roasted peanuts.
  21. It will authenticate via AD/LDAP by looking up the supplied username & password. If that's your definition of "tie", then yes. But it doesn't automatically pull in the user via the "integrated windows authentication" feature of IIS.
  22. What I'm guessing happens is this: Your friends take up the opportunity of giving Facebook access to their contact/address books of services like Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo! mail, so that they can "find friends." Several of your friends have you as a contact. The link you clicked probably has a unique identifier in it that is linked to your email address. This is then matched with the data in points 1 & 2.
  23. *Psssst* Does anyone have IanT's phone number?
  24. Looks like it's already been posted Forums > Lifestyle > Opinion.
  25. Rubbish GUI No third-party apps No cut/copy/paste No Win Mobile 7 on existing hardware ("too many buttons!") Yep, MS are really going in the right direction to get a hold of the mobile market People don't want to be locked down! Definitely more of a reason to take the Android route. There's bound to be a physical handset that suits your needs.
