@ericdano We are currently looking into this as we too are moving to G-mail via GAFE, we currently run Zimbra 8.5 and it seems there are various ways of doing this depending on how your Zimbra e-mail server is setup. We do have the added bonus of being able to run the GApps from a block on our Moodle VLE which integrates with both our AD and Sims so this might be a get out of jail free for us (Hopefully) but whichever way we go I will let everyone know.

Hi All, Anyone done the above, looking at moving towards Google Apps for education, just wanting to know what the required steps are and how to migrate the Zimbra mail over to G-mail, Need to get my head round this as it looks after much cajoling and pushing from me that my line manager (Who dislikes the thought of having services in the cloud) has finally succumbed and we could be going this route. Any help would be greatly accepted, Thank you Bossman

@FN-GM You have full mesh topology akin to what banks and the like have, very expensive though but if you have the budget do it. I have seen your setup and am envious at the amount of investment which has been input.

@witch Was the excel report exported from Sims by any chance?

@Marshall_IT Is it actually a SAN that you require, they are becoming less and less a requirement these days as they are so expensive compared to Hybrid NAS/SAN units. Have you tried these They may have what your looking for at a fraction of the cost.

@witch I feel what she has done is overlay a blank template over the original and written her comments into 2 or 3 sections then saved it, this would have overwritten the whole Excel workbook and thus the blank comment banks. Typical user error and of course there is no going back, I would advise that for future reference any staff member using a USB pendrive copy the necessary files onto their computer or laptop and work on them there and when satisfied they have everything correct copy back to the USB. If they error they have a saved copy on the computer or laptop..................simple! A lesson to be taken by the teachers in a 20 minute session on how to use a USB stick properly.

@maxrebo Paper registers and the attendance officer would then have to input the data, I suppose if you had Pars or some other third party software you could take the registers offline then when the Sims server came back up it would just sync, job done. I don't know if these third party apps can do this but they probably should as this would be a big selling point.

@ozydave I would get one in to test as it looks like it has its own sandbox for actually running the students work, test it and then if it don't work as expected write out the report stating why and move on to an online programming tool, plenty of them around now, Here is one that we use:Learn to code | Codecademy Kids seem to enjoy this and other coding tools

Go for it, we have a core switch and also an edge switch as spares, for the cost involved to have an infrastructure which would be a full mesh topology allowing for failures would cost £1000s which in the cold light of day for our environment is not a requirement at our school. Cheaper by far to have a spare

@Novalee You only get what you pay for and in my opinion you cannot go far wrong with Humax What they have is brilliant and of course works very well indeed. You could build your own using Xibo and 2 or 3 large drives but for out of the box Humax work very well

I have found that keeping your SAN connections on a different network address via 2 x 1GB switches (for failover) and having 4 Nics in each host 2 x 1GBnics (teamed) for LAN and 2 x 1GB Nics with SAN network addressing, this stops undue network traffic and also makes things run smoother and quicker. I would also have 3 hosts as opposed to 2 as I like to think I have enough failover HA coverage using the 2 thirds case scenario. Then again I am not an expert in virtualisation platforms only been using for the past 7 years. All the above can and will work with 10GB nics and Switches its just we don't have the money to upgrade atm.

@witch What AV are you running in the school? Apparently Norton IPS has been playing havoc with IE11 so it may also have affected Google Chrome, https://community.norton.com/en/forums/tonights-update-crashing-ie11 I realise its 2 days old but may have a bearing?

@Steve21 Model RS3614xs+ See here All kinds of things you can do with different models, have a look and get some ideas. Give them a bell and tell them what you looking for, we currently been quoted for 2 more Hybrid solutions for complete failover for our VM's, we are moving to either VMWare or Hyper-V depending on the outcome of a meeting with our LA, just depends what they will support or we may have to move to third party support as my role within the school has changed due to JRE and I used to support all of it. @Steve21 Why a SAN? Have you looked at Synology stuff they have some very quick NAS/SAN hybrid kit which is well worth looking at and all Hypervisor certified with all the different models, Been running half a dozen VM's off the one we have and it only has SATA drives in, the new ones you can mix and match SSDs and SATA 7200rpm 8TB drives together for extra caching performance. Just a thought as these units full of drives only retail around £5k or less

@jertsy We came across something similar with Audacity a few years back in that our students required unlimited diskspace once we had set the user quotas to unlimited they were able to save their work. Don't know if this is the problem your having though but worth a try

For £3k per annum I don't think that is bad when you think of some of the ridiculous pieces of software that teachers rant on about and get without fully understanding it! And you don't need added local storage, our 2008R2 media server has half a terabyte of storage already used and they require more plus everything has to be in WMV format. Have looked into open source models but MediaCore does it all in different formats and the storage is plentiful. We just don't have any money to implement.
