@Tall_Paul Forgot to mention that our current synology box (36TB RAID 6) has just 12 SATA 5400 4TB WD Reds and supports 7 VM's plus their Virtual disk storage too! The newer version supports 8TB SATA 7200rpm and also 1TB SSD's in a mix So easy to setup with the cool interface

Especially the software download, basically everything which can be downloaded should be allowed, where do these guys come from with their "Bluesky" thinking which in reality gives everyone else a headache!!! It would be like going into a gun shop and allowing teenagers to purchase weapons without the need for a permit or license! Absolute garbage!! Yes we want to maintain free thinking but to allow access to social networking to try and teach students and staff appropriate use, most of them have accounts on social networking sites and know fully how to use them and also how to abuse them, imagine the cyber bullying that would happen in school, no work would ever get done in class as most of the students and also most of the staff would spend their time on anyone of a number of social media sites. As for all the rest its totally unbelievable that they want to ban advertising yet allow social media haha! most social media contains advertising!! Could rant on but hey ho!

@Tall_Paul Have you looked into Synology We have found them an excellent product and currently running 7 VMs in total on it, we are shortly going to be running 2 x RS3614xs in sync with 12 1TB SSDs in each for our backend Hyper-V platform and the current one we have will be coupled with another with 8TB drives for 96TB formatted storage so when added we will have 128TB of pure storage for both backups (VEEAM) and staff and student data storage. Excellent pricing too! Interface is so good and they come with 5 years warranty also, what more can I say for around £4k - £5k

We switched from our LA's black fibre offering as it was no good for us due to intermittent failures along their WAN, went with just a raw 100MB up and down 1 to 1 fibre feed from BT with a 100% uptime SLA guaranteed or else large KPI's come into effect for every hour of disconnectivity. @Edu-IT No I haven't as we don't use it that extensively, in fact it was a one off that we required it so didn't see the urgency, too many other things going on at the moment. @pete I created a template for clients and one for servers which I then populated with our proxy settings, downloaded the installer and we manually installed but didn't enter the proxy settings. When the client installer had finished it runs a preliminary scan and then in the Avast online console it comes up as requiring activation which I preceded to activate and then as it is activating I change the client to the template in the dropdown box to the client one as it would normally use the default. Updates are approximately every 12 - 24hrs I hope this has cleared it up, I also now have a deployment package via PDQ deploy which just works lovely. Only thing I have had problems with is the IPlayer URL's not showing on the client. Update: I have found our proxy settings in here: C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\setup\Proxy.ini

@pete I too see the Event ID 01 which refers to the Avast bcc (New synchronize delay 360) but haven't had any more on this from Avast Will keep trying though, Question? Do you have any problems when streaming video from BBCIPlayer with Avast webshield? I have put in the Exclusions for the URL but it seems to want to check the media stream as its running causing it to judder every now and again and cause syncing problems. Cheers

Make sure you don't do what an external electrical company did when they installed one and strip the cables all one length from the cable clamp ends, what a nightmare talk about "crosstalk!" it was like "Gossip alley" hehe! Had to call their boss up and he came out and rectified the job!

@Edu-IT It downloads the software to each PC client which is kept updated from the cloud, it runs locally on each workstation like any other software installed and each user can run a scan from the icon on the desktop or a scan can be set from the online console for each computer.

@pete In the end SLT didn't run with it as it was too costly for the amount of students taking Music as a subject It was a good idea I thought but finance in the end ruled the day

@Edu-IT You pays your money or not in the case of Avast and you makes your choice its that simple, one is free and up on the top with the paid for AV's for us it was an easy choice to make as we have no budget for renewal with Kaspersky.

@Edu-IT We have done it manually over a couple of weeks, we had to remove Kaspersky (Which required the removal tool) so one of our technicians was tasked with this duty, he did a very good job and so far it has been very good, as I say it will have a an msi for mass deployment but there is an exe file (Full exe not the lite version) when you sign up so you could deploy using that which I was going to sort but just haven't had the time. The console is very intuitive and the help files are good, if you using Smoothwall there are a couple of things to do which is documented somewhere on here, just search for Avast for business and you should see the thread. It seems very light on bandwidth especially when downloading the updates, it has a notification function which flags up any updates required or if it has stopped any malware/virus through either scan or webshield. Try it for free, nothing to lose Highly recommend

@mikeprice - Ditto here, working extremely well, will be so much better when they deliver a full msi for future mass deployments, its in the pipeline so I have been told along with scheduled scans from the console. Been great up to now Highly recommend

I was figuratively speaking from our schools perspective as we have had no problems with IE so why change something which has worked well all these years for us? Just because of lazy developers wanting to kill it off, I know what you can do with Chrome have had it installed and tested but believe me it is hard work trying to get staff to think for themselves let alone introduce another web browser to totally confuse them (It doesn't take much even when we have regular IT surgery's for them to enhance their personal learning). @mjk didn't mean it literally about IE reigning over the world

We have been using IE in various formats for 13 years with no problems, currently using IE11 and no-one has complained yet about not being able to access a website. It will run its course and be replaced with another Microsoft offering which no doubt will have its share of bugs as do all other browsers, it has served us well and will remain to be used here for as long as it reigns. Long live IE!!! (Well until we replace it with the newer version) hehe!
