This is another work around provided by Birmingham LA's Link2ICT using the excel convert text to columns feature Note leave only TAB tick box (default) checked In step 2 of the wizard Why does SIMS export an excel file with a date column set as text format anyway. If it was set to a date field this issue would not exist. They could default the output to a longer date format to avoid date month ambiguity also. Did try to get Link2ICT to report this as a bug to Capita but not sure if they will.

Argh! Getting this problem too. This should be reported to Capita ASAP! :mad: @vikpaw thanks for the workaround. :EDIT: Calmed down now i got @vikpaw 's workaround using RTF's to work. Was able to paste from RTF table open in word the whole column of 700 kids dates of birth into excel. Worked first time. Luckilly I had already formatted the cells to a date format with slashes rather than dashs and excel converted the date format for me.

The equivalent of the behaviour add screen in e-Portal is where we previously had the trouble. So assessments entries are audited but not behaviour add entries?

We have previously used the audit trail in Facility and IIS log files to track who was using e-Portal from home to add offensive comments against pupils and staff. Does the Web facing SIMS product add more audit trails?

Is it also true there is no audit trail feature?

Hi All, We are one of many Birmingham schools who have just moved from Facility to SIMS. I have been told by Link2ICT that SIMS lacks the ability to force complex passwords. Also they say you cannot stop a user changing their own password. Are either of these true. If so is there a way of stopping teacher changing their own password to "password". What I have done so far is to reset the password and then manually impersonated them and then changed the password to the first 5 characters (to make life easier for them) and told them not to change their password (chocolate teapot territory I know).

We solved it by disabling firewall too.

What do people think of this development... That new 'Microsoft GCSE': We reveal what's in it ? The Register Pupils get 60% credit for Programming using Microsoft Tools and 40% for "fact digesting". Seems like a step in the right direction but hopefully won't eclipse efforts to embed devices such as the Raspberry Pi.

So you now own the hardware? I thought i was on lease or something? Was the cost of hardware detailed on the invoice or was it subsidised by the subscription? What screens do they use? Did you then connect your own PC's to the screens or is there some intelligence in the screen that has an ethernet port?

How much locally produced content can you insert into the life channel content? Can the playlist contain as much or as little of your own content as you want or is there a limit of 50% or something imposed? We already have 3 screens here that we run powerpoint content on. Only just put up the last 2 in reception entrance!!!! Now the SLT want the life channel. They have got to want it in reception area needing to pull down my work. GRRR. Again no joined up thinking from manglement!!!

What I'm basically saying is PLEASE CAN WE HAVE GROUP POLICY (like functionality) FOR LIVE@EDU/GOOGLE APPS!!!!

If it is now just an issue of password security how is a pupil giving out their password for Dropbox or Live@EDU any worse than giving out their password for the school domain (if you have some form of remote access to your internal servers set up). In fact in this senario if users are compromised on your network then the piossiblilites for some heath-robinson remote access solution being hacked are worse as your INTERNAL network and servers could be compromised. My point is surely from a IT security point of view having less "vectors" into your internal network is preferable. Cloud storage is one way of allowing sharing between home and school without opening up your network. Google and Microsoft should be tailoring their products to allow lock downs on sharing files with users outside your organisation and the online editing/viewing features should be used to facilitate the disabling of download permissions entirely (of course copy and paste and screenshot is a loophole) so files could not be downloaded from a secure folder and then distributed. Another idea is that the web application detects that when you are sending e-mail to an external domain and pop's up a reminder of your responsibilities under the DPA and gives you an "are you sure" message. Just basic e-mail has allowed the worst kind of DPA infringements in history but we don't all block hotmail and gmail in schools.

How did you find the Brightsign Solution? What units have you got? do they have much of a presence in the UK?

No offence but hate loxit trolleys. No end of problems with 'em!!! So hard to keep cables tidy!!! also internal power distribution fails randomly due to i thing loose internal IEC plugs (still investigating)

Windows 8 Metro when it come out!! (Semi Serious here) Large icons etc. Just need to disable the social networking elements and weather widgets.

Apples own MDM Called Apple Profile Manager (this appears to have superceded the iPhone Configuration utility which generated XML files which were then synced over usb or e-mailed to the device. Not very good) is free. HP have a PDF extolling the virtues of widescreen monitors for Business users. Hardly fair comparing a small 4:3 monitor with a massive 16:9 monitor. They sidestep the issue of vertical space when using the Ribbon in Office by comparing small square monitor with large widescreen monitors which have more vertical pixels. They did however not forget that you can mount some 16:9 monitors in a portait orientation to overcome some of the vertical space issues. Does this this only affect domains running Win Server 2008 R2. What about 2003 domains?

What happens if a shared file is deleted by a user. Presumably only that user would see it it in their own trash. Everyone else would only see that the file is gone. Would an admin (of Google Apps for Domains) see who deleted it and be able to recover it?

On the subject of backups, what options do you have if staff accidentally delete files. Does it have any kind of "time machine/previous versions" functionality?
