We're using Hisense Sero 8's in class sets and this year, all new students could get one for £50 through the college. The camera isn't up to your spec but after a year of testing class sets we've found them to have decent battery life and robust. They're around £75 each.

I used KDE from 2 to 3.5 and it was (IMO) a superb environment. From 4 the bloat set in and things like the turd (officially the cashew) appeared, something that served no purpose except to annoy users. Everything that could be set with the turd, could be set in other ways. When KDE4 came, I switched to IceWM, as IceWM and KDE play nicely together, and there were KDE apps I liked and used, such as K3B, Klipper, KColorChoser, KCalc, Kedit and most importantly KMail. KMail is, IMO, the best mail client around - well it was until it became bloated by forced integration with nepomuk and akonadi. When it become impossible to run KMail without the aforementioned intergration (which is of no use to me), I finally ditched the last of the KDE apps. You can recompile KDE without the bloat, but it is a long and complicated process. In fact, it is far easier to compile the Linux Kernel than it is to compile KDE. I miss KDE and if I could get KDE3 to run on the latest Linux, I would use that, but compilation is, as I said, painful. The KDE environment is still streets ahead of the Windows desktop. I use WIndows at work and I am constantly annoyed by (in no particular order): the lack of mutilple desktops the single string clipboard (with KDE I used to run a 10 string clipboard and I could have had more) auto-open (highlight for example a url and the browser opens) auto copy/paste (highlight text, move mouse, click and it's copied - no messy ctrl-c/ctrl-v) no additional software required to keep a window on top KDE didn't keep re-arranging my desktop and menus the unreliable search in Windows the inability to screen print regions (OK we finally have this now but how long did it take before it became available without additional apps?) I'm running XFCE on my desktop without any KDE apps but I think some will be coming back (I do miss Klipper).

Today, we've had some Macs which can't go to google or yahoo but can get to bbc, ibm, aj, etc. It seems as though it sites which use an ssl cert. We're hoping the problem goes away as it didn't happen yesterday.

We did get this working with a re-write rule, which is probably way to complicated. BTW we already had index.php as the default document. The problem was c:\inetpub\moodle\index.php was never processed. This is the first rule in the config, so if a user goes to http://oursite.ac.uk/moodle or http://oursite.ac.uk/staff etc, control is passed to the appropriate redirect otherwise the rules supplied by the website people are called. It's a right bodge but I happy enough that it is working. The real problem is they want the new website live today (for open evening tomorrow) and the authors are still fiddling with it and there is a load of dummy content on it. I warned them it is was too soon to go live (and we in IT have had absolutely no say in the new site - what do we know?) but that's what they wanted. Any complaints about it, I'm simply referring everything to the project leader (who is conveniently off this week).

I'm very confused by IIS rewrite rules and I'm hoping than one of the panel can help. Our new website is at http://oursite.ac.uk and it actually goes to http://oursite.ac.uk/index.php. We have a bunch of directories within the physical site, for example moodle and each of these contains an index.php which redirects the user to the real url for that application. What we find is that http://oursite.ac.uk/moodle/ is directed to the 404 page and http://oursite.ac.uk/moodle/index.php is redirected to moodle. Any idea how we do a rewrite rule to chuck index.php onto the url, if it isn't there? This is out attempt (which does nothing - on the plus side it doesn't break anything)

Sorry about that - I haven't used it for 6 years and I can't remember what it does and doesn't do.

We use Digital Signage - by Lobby Sign They look very nice but in reality they aren't very good. The software is very basic and although they can be networked, you have to VNC to each one to post the info to them (fill in a form on the screen), rather than creating a presentation and sending it. We have three. It wasn't my decision.

Two 500Gb RAID1 drives in the box and a 500Gb external disk that everything is backed up to. I'm using about 220Gb all up. Movies are on DVDS and VHS tapes, music on vinyl, cassettes and CDs and pictures are in the photo albums on my bookshelf.

Funnily enough I have seen two of these this week on the outskirts of Birmingham. I suppose it could be the same one twice but the locations were a couple of miles apart. One was on the road and I suspect the police may take a dim view of that. We already have barcodes printed on the plastic photo ids. Basically we want a scanner to dump the info into a db on a server somewhere.

We've been asked to dream up something on the cheap, where by students can scan their id cards when they enter a room and scan it again when they leave. The date, time and id number will be recorded in both instances. It is only going to be used in perhaps four or five rooms. I was thinking of a headless, ancient PC in each room with a bar code scanner attached. I have no idea as to what software to run on these PCs - the time clock systems that I've looked at seem to be way OTT for our needs. Any suggestions most gratefully received.

We host a Joomla! based intranet with links to all the things that people might need like email, policies, standard documents etc. On the front page is the today in college notice, the weekly briefing and general staff notices. These last three parts are updated by several people. As we have users with a range of experience, from those who shouldn't be let near a computer to experienced users, we have word documents that they change and save and save it again as "web page filtered". This is displayed using an iframe.

There are people who think the moon landings were fake and professional wrestling is real I remember the Apollo 11 landing well - we were given a day off school to watch it. Those with parents who worked, stayed at school and watched it there. I sat, glued to the screen all day, waiting for the moment, clutching a little scrapbook. In the week before the landing, the local newspaper printed drawings of the mission, which you could cut out and stick in the scrapbook. I still have this.
