  1. Just trying to plan our wireless network upgrade. From looking around Aerohives wireless planer looks to be the best. The online form just wont work though so i cant get a copy. Starting to put me of the company as their support team hasnt helped in live chats or email.
  2. Try running rsop.msc. It shows you what policies are applied to the computer and any errors. Have solved a few issues of software not installing with this. Ive foud manually uninstalling software deployed with GPO causes issues, The registry keys it uses to tell what software has been stored by gpo are here: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Group Policy\AppMgmt Can try deleting the folder for the java software.
  3. Ricoh have their own free app now. The downside of apps is that it doesnt add the printer intothe printer list in safari so you have to save as a image or document and load that file in the app.
  4. Wondered why I got up at 8:30 today. Never sleep later than 7:30.
  5. I know what you mean about getting blood from a stone. I'm trying to get the wireless planner tool, I've been in live chats and email convos with them and still no email with it. Think their poor customer service has lost my business.
  6. Have you tried running rsop.msc when logged in as the student. It will give you a list of all currently applied settings and which GPO they came from inc any errors. The obvious things youve probably checked already are permissions to the new SEN desktop folder to ensure they have permission and also to check that they are not in a group youve denied access to. The other thing is trying the enforce GPO option incase its inheriting your normal redirection GPO.
  7. Hi, Just trying to install Ubuntu Server for Nagios but having trouble from the start. To access a unrestricted internet connection in windows we just set the gateway to the unrestricted router and remove any proxies. Tried adding the gateway in interfaces but it still wont connect to o things like apt-get update. Any ideas? Many thanks
  8. Five schools here, all use the same domain. Diferent GPO's for each site for software installs but they all use the same pupil and staff GPO's.
  9. Or go for a cmd script and run this script as the login script with loopback. Just change the if statement. Not tried or tested. Checking AD Group Membership from a Batch File | IT. Tech. Internet. @echo off cls set i=0 set group=SomeAdGroup set user=%username% echo Checking if %user% is member of %group%... for /f %%f in ('"net user %user% /domain | findstr /i %group%"') do set /a i=%i%+1 if %i% gtr 0 (goto :member) :nomember echo %user% is not member of %group% goto :end :member echo %user% is member of %group% :end As you can probably tell when we have a problem here my mind just goes crazy and is like try this, try that, now this... Normally get a answer fairly quickly though.
  10. How about on the group policy settings you can remove authenticated users from the security filtering. (the page where you can see what the gpo is linked to) Remove authenticated users and just add the security groups you want it to run on. Not sure if because its using loopback if it would apply with just a use security group in there. Worth a go, im just thinking aloud.
  11. You would probably need to create a GPO and link it to the computers. Enable loopback processing and set in the user configuration the papercut exe to run at login. You would then need a wmi filter that only lets the policy run if the user is a member of a secuirty group. Unfortunatly i cant help with this bit. i only have a wmi filter for if a file exists and i robbed that from google.
  12. Have you tried enabling in the registry again? Theres a fair amount do but some sites have a bat file to download such as How to Enable or Disable the Libraries Feature in Windows 7 Havnt tried or tested the restore registry edits.
  13. Hi, Just trying to setup RemoteApp. I started with the cannot connect error so added the TSGateway into IIS and the Gateway settings in RemoteApp manager. Now ive got a new erro saying because of the forward proxy configuration it cant connect. Cant find any info about this one. Any ideas? Edit: Found the answer. Where it isnt connected to the domain you have to use the IP address rather than the host name.
  14. Thats the answer, thanks. Suffixes dont exist for IPv4 in DHCp anymore by the looks of it (option 119).
  15. Thanks both. Combining both posts i can now ping computer.domain.com. Any ideas how i can get it so you dont have to type the FQDN in? Trying to get AB Tutor Control working with group.
  16. Hi, Trying to use our other domains dns server in a forwarder from our main domain so i dont have to remember all the IPs. Have added it into both our DNS server as a forwarder (not a conditional forwarder). Restarted DNS, cleared the cache. NSlookup when i typed a PC name in says non-existant domain. I can type in \\servername and its lets me in but i cant ping the servername or any other device. Been a while since ive done anything DNS wise. Any help would be appreciated.
  17. Reading it in tapatalk I could only see the first line. Couldn't understand why I wasn't getting it. V good
  18. Hi, Looking into RDS and watching some vids on RemoteApp. After creating a installation package of a remote app and deploying through GPO the user opens up the app and it looks like it would if installed fully on the local machine. Is it the server or the local machine that carries out the processing? Say encoding a video. If they opened up a file on their memory stick would they have to wait for the file to transfer to the server before the Remote App loaded? Many thanks
  19. Thanks jbailey. Sound like your original thoughts is the same as mine at the minute. Where everything is old people just don't like it. They have had to redo the system three times apparently because they are using old servers and its just overloaded. Looks like you use session Host with the aero tick box checked rather than virtualisation host and having mountains of virtual win 7 machines. is that correct? I think it If I got the job there I would get a demo of what a system could actually do. I see dell were doing lots of thin client stuff at Bett. It defiantly has its advantages but would be concerned about things like the smart board software, and if it could actually be used for all classrooms especially in IT. I notice you say you havnt moved these over. Out of interest and off topic, what do you do with your old servers?
  20. That sounds like a good plan for older machines Jonah. How do staff, especially technophobia staff get on with ubuntu and then understanding and using Remote Desktop?
  21. A good vid there. As he says a lot of people use admin accounts for convenience. My manager does and I never touch his machine because I don't trust it. The worry is, being logged in as a domain admin opens up the entire network. Just type \\domain.name in and see what comes up. Sometimes I roll with a local admin, and this is what any part time technicians can ever access here.
  22. The problem I've found with open source things like Zabbix is they aren't the most easy thing to setup. Where they are made to run on Linux and made to monitor so many thing you seem to have to be a programmer to work out how to tell it to monitor something. I never got my head round the language in the time I had as there doesn't seem to be great documentation anywhere. We use spiceworks mainly, AB tutor for the monitoring, the dude is good for network traffic between servers and basic checks that are built in.
  23. Hi all, Just looked around another school and they are using Remote Desktop Services. This was apparently setup because of the age of the machines and them struggling to even watch videos. It would seem on the local machines have on them office and the SMART Board software. All else is done through the RDS. Theres a lot of issues in the school and from the meeting i had they are keen to get things put right and seem to be willing to spend out where needed. When I do anything I always try and make it as simple as possible for everyone. In my current school we don't use RDS as we have a good rolling computer plan so equipment doesn't get to this state. From watching someone use the computer they have to go through logging in locally and then opening up Remote Desktop and connecting to a different server depending on what they want to do, this leaves them with two or more desktops open. This to me seems complicated for new users and I know some staff that I've managed to get using a computer in my current school wouldn't cope with that. If you use RDS, how do you use it? How do you keep things simple? If you use it only because of dated software, would you scrap it if you could get the cash for new machines? I understand the reasons it was put in but wouldn't choose it at the moment.
  24. Thanks for responding. Im guessing this has been changed since v6 then. Have groups in v6 and have applied policies to them but they dont get added. Update. Its actually working, havnt tried for a while and its obviously been fixed in the newer v6 program. Do you know when it applies? do you have to restart AB tutor to apply? What about when you change policies, does it update? Will have a play now.
  25. Thats extreme sjpage. The school can survive for a few years and then when the ageing machines start to go wrong your stuffed. That's what happened to my school before my manager showers up and argued for more budget.
