Replicating server DNS zone has no contents.
dany2010 replied to dany2010's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Just trying Nslookup server2 And Nslookup server 1 I don't get any errors. That's about all I know about Nslookup tho. We have noticed some workstations have the wrong ip address against their DNS name. -
Backup and restore certain features/roles only?
dany2010 replied to dany2010's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Because its the upstream server to five other server, will the other servers auto detect after install or will we have to reconfigure them all? Not a big job but would like to know before going ahead. -

THanks, Have changed the server so the primary dns points to themselves rather than each other but still no joy. Could the deadlock be caused by something else? If i add server 1 onto server 2 dns MMC i cant see any entries on server 1. If i add server 2 onto server 1 dns MMC i can see everything on both servers. THis isnt to do with the FSMO roles is it? -
Hi, One of our servers could do with a clean install but is currently the WSUS, WDS, MDT, ESET antivirus server. Is there anyway to just back these applications up only so i can install from a server disk and just restore the services? The most important is probably WSUS and MDT. Thanks

Hi, Could you post/PM your script please sted. Thinking i might be able to use it when deploying with MDT. Having it as a startup script will we have to lengthen the time computers wait for scripts which shouldnt be a problem but not something i want to do if i can help it. Looks like our LEA who manages SIMS on our server isnt using SOLUS any more as its shoved in a to be deleted folder.

Hi, We've just been asked to put SIMS on all teacher machines which would take about a year to do. Is there any way to deploy it from a GPO without having a text file with the administrator password in? Had a look on the net and only found a script containing a password. Cant believe how companies like capita and microsoft (office) dont include a MSI. Many thanks, Dan.

[mdt] Create a text file on the C drive when installing?
dany2010 replied to dany2010's topic in O/S Deployment
Hi, Just found a guide on the net. http://www.theurbanpenguin.com/pdf/MDT-OEM.pdf You just add the file into the OEM folder and it copies it over. Will give it a go tomorrow. -
[mdt] Create a text file on the C drive when installing?
dany2010 replied to dany2010's topic in O/S Deployment
Thanks Psymon, Will give it a go Monday morning. Could be the answer, strange as it ran on mine. -
Hi, I would like MDT to create a text file on the c drive before joining the domain. This is used to tell when the installation has started and finished and is used by Group policy preferences. I have tried running the command echo.>C:\Installing.txt This is set as a 'run command line' task in the task sequence before the 'recover from domain' task. All i get however is a error with Notepad as the title and the error The filename,Directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi, Just been reading and the reason why I thought I could only use one share is that it defaults to the first. If I edit the bootstrap file your supposed to be able to see both. We use both WDS for the press f12 pxe network boot an MDT for the os and drivers. We only have server 2008 so no drivers in WDS.

Hi, We have a few machines the are having trouble with folder redirections. Our menus are copied to the C drive of the machines at startup and i can confirm they are on the trouble machines. Group policy then points users desktop and start menu to the C drive folder. This has been working for a while with no problems until yesterday. We thought it could be to do with windows updates until another one of our sites that hasnt yet been set to update is getting the same issues. Any ideas? I've had a look out found a temp reg fix. Havnt checked yet but seemed to be a problem before service pack 1 but all of our machines have that. Many thanks, Dan

Thanks for the replies, just trying to work it out the reason for the next one to do it. Yep tried with mains only and battery only. I gave the cables a wiggle and didnt seem to help. Both seem to be working again now so will have to wat for the next one to do it. One was a Acer and the other i cant remember. We repair machines for teachers cheaply, saves us buying hundreds of laptops. I believe everything spins up inc fan and HDD but you dont get anything on the screen, i believe the backlight comes on.

Hi, I've got two laptops that are doing the same thing, they turn on and then straight back of again. I have reseated the ram etc. I then thought that it could be overheating as i left it overnight and they worked the next morning but after opening i found the insides are clean. They have now been turned on for hours and arnt kicking out excessive heat. Any ideas? The only thing i can think of is something with the motherboard but im not sure. Thanks

Didn't think about KMS, shall give it a go when I get back on Wed. My aim is to be able to press a few buttons and then walk away and let it do everything else itself. No more interaction from us needed. Leaves me more time to do better stuff. The only pain I'm having is having five site I'm having to repeat everything five times, e.g. Rolling out a software package so it doesn't get pulled over slow connections. Once it's setup though it shouldn't be too bad.

[mdt] How to active Windows + Office when complete?
dany2010 replied to dany2010's topic in O/S Deployment
Thanks, That could be the solution. Just trying to get the Task Sequence to activate before joining (moved join domain task down the list). Lets see if this works or breaks everything. -
Hi, We have to use a proxy in our school so windows doesnt activate itself on install. I have created in the task sequence a few command line tasks that add the proxy in which works but i then added another two command line tasks which i set to cscript.exe c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato and cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\ospp.vbs" /act These are set to run after the proxy has been set. Can anyone think why this isnt working? Thanks Update: Found out that once its joined to the domain it requires a domain admin to activate, local admins can no longer do it. Just have to try and find a way round that now.

Hi, There are now three of us that build from the server at different locations. If im working on the server and update the deployment share, what happens if someone tries to install windows from the share when its being updated? Thanks. p.s. Whats the difference between optimize and a complete re-build. The optimise option never works.

Just tried it out on windows 7 again, if you have a local user that has the same credentials as a network user, you have the same perrmissions as a network user with regards to accessing folder shares. Found that out by accident one time. WIll give the runas a go. Hopefully if i get MDT to add a new local admin user and run the script as a network user with the same users credentials it will let me install using the local admin account and use the network user permissions. Update: Just found that runas doesnt allow password input.
-
Just tried editing the xml file manually and it added a new user but it can only install using the administrator account and failed. I have created a application in MDT that runs a script, the script then points to setup files in a folder share on the network. The problem is that the local administrator cant access the network share because it doesnt have permission and we cant give everyone permission to the share as its the SIMS confidential folder. What i was trying to do is to get MDT to use another local user. This user has a username and password that matches a user on the network with access to the folder. I might try using the runas command in the MDT command line box.
-
Hi, I've just found a script online to install SIMS but it requires the local user to have a matching user account on the network to access the SIMS file share. Is there a way to change the default Administrator user to another username? Many thanks

Replicating server DNS zone has no contents.
dany2010 replied to dany2010's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Hi, Yes Windows firewall is used on both servers. In the nameservers tab both servers appear Primary Server network setting: Primary DNS = Secondary server Alternate DNS = Primary Server Second server network settings: Primary DNS = Primary Server Alternate DNS = Second server Repadmin /showreps show replications completed successfully but in the log: dns service error 4013 The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been completed. The DNS server service cannot start until the initial synchronization is complete because critical DNS data might not yet be replicated onto this domain controller. If events in the AD DS event log indicate that there is a problem with DNS name resolution, consider adding the IP address of another DNS server for this domain to the DNS server list in the Internet Protocol properties of this computer. This event will be logged every two minutes until AD DS has signaled that the initial synchronization has successfully completed. -
