  1. Hi, We currently use AB Tutor to block websites but this takes ages to roll out the banned websites to computers. The obvious answer would be to stick in a proxy but our network spans over five sites so each site would need its own proxy which would work out expensive. One proxy would work but the site containing the proxy would be bombarded with data. Is there a piece of server based software that rolls out banned websites when the computer starts so internet data can still go from computer to the WWW without going cross site first? Many thanks
  2. Hi, This program is so confusing to setup new items to monitor. What im looking to do is monitor disks on a machine. e.g. Disk 0, Disk 1, Disk 3. Some of the drives are mirrored so the D drive will check both Disk 1 and 2 so we cant just scan the D drive. Any ideas? Thanks
  3. Hi, I've just been given one of our MacBooks with the flashing folder icon, no OS error. I've just put in a new HDD and ran the install disk and it can't find the HDD on the install wizard. The disk utility program show it as a 1 5tb HDD even though it's only 250gb. When I try and erase and format it just gives a IO error. I've tried jumpering the two left and two right jumpers reading that this sometimes work but no luck. I've also tried our imaging software to try and format but that just error. Any ideas? Thanks Just reading a bit more and everything seems to ok. It's probably a 06macbook but I'm trying a 250gb HDD". Only thing I havnt tried is formatting in another machine or holding d on startup to run a hardware test. Will give it a go in the morning.
  4. Thanks for all your replies. If we were to run a script to install office would it install on load up when it says please wait before logging in and extend this part? This is what we are after. The thing that we dont like about deploying it with MDT is that we cant then role it out to other machines that are not installed using MDT.
  5. Both look like top solutions. Thanks Will give Zabbix ago but looks a bit complicated setup. PRTG could get a bit costly but does everything.
  6. Hi, I would like to deploy Office 2010 using GPO software installation rather than using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit to make things cleaner. I know Office 2010 does not include a MSI and i dont like the idea of scripts. Has anyone tried creating a MSI with a program such as Advanced Installer?
  7. Hi, We now have 7 servers on five sites and it's getting a bit much monitoring every single one every day. I've been mentally busy over the past few days and hadn't noticed one of the backup drives has been down for two days so it's getting dangerous. Is there a piece of software that includes sensors to check all network shares, processes, and windows server backups and gives an alarm if something is wrong. I have a few small spare monitors that I'm going to setup as a spanned multiple display and leave on for showing this data. Any ideas? Thanks
  8. Didnt even think about that. You would have to wait overnite before rolling out. Is there a replicate now button? IF we are just rolling out a small program we dont want to have to wait. Another simple way i guess is to create a little robocopy sctipt that can be run to mirror the folder. I can then run it manually and see when its finished to update the GPO.
  9. Hi, Just reading up on DFS namespaces and MDT. I've found that you cant use a domain namespace for the actual image e.g. \\domain.local\Deployment. Will it cause any errors if i use a domain namespace for application installs? Thanks
  10. Hi, Currently our network is over five sites. Each site has its own file server and each server has its own programs folder that contains all of the msi's. This means that software is installed from the local servers rather than over the VLAN. All sites contain the same software so what i would like to do it create a domain DFS namespace with the five folders all replicating so i only have to make the one change. I can then also delete the five software installation gpo's that we currently have one for a single gpo that points to \\domain.local\programs\msi file. The biggest concern i have is that two of our schools currently have mega slow connections and from experience found that installing from another sites server took about a year. Is DFS clever enough that it will ping the five servers and then choose the local server rather than a server from another site?
  11. Think i;ve found the answer. Ran delprof2 on all machines and deleted all user profiles from the server. Seemed to have fixed it but havnt properly tried it out yet. Guess it stores the settings in their profile or something
  12. Thanks all. Put one through the battery backup plug and the otherthrough the surge protector. Not 100% safe if one PSU goes but we are in and out all day so hopefully would see the warning symbol if one went.
  13. Managed to get this splash screen working today. Brilliant idea, I've also set the permissions on the MDT share to deny pupils and staff. This means if they get past the splash screen then they still cant see the images.
  14. Thanks, Most of the bios have passwords and default to boot from the HDD except if The boot menu key is pressed. Most of the machines protect the boot menu but some don't for some reason. MDT asks for a password before showing a list but didn't think about it. Will try entering a pupil password tomorrow to see if it lets them passed. Might already have the answer. If not il give the splash screen a go, not a bad idea.
  15. Hi, I've just finished setting up WDS and MDT to roll out windows 7 but i've found a problem. Is there a way of stopping Windows Deployment Services automatically authorising computers that have been approved before? I can see many of our computers breaking because the kids have discovered how to reinstall without a CD. This also would mean we could get rid of the F12. I've found the command to manually delete the approved list but can see this being forgotton to be done by the other techies. Many thanks, Dan.
  16. Hi, When i first started here they had both PSU's going through the UPS. When the UPS dies it dropped the server. Is it best to have both PSU going through the UPS and just say that its rare that it fails or do you have only one going to the UPS and one going direct to mains? Many thanks, Dan.
  17. Hi, Occasionally we get the odd issue with people profiles which requires us to delete their existing and get the server to create a new profile for them. What i've found is that if you delete their profile from the server, if the user then logs onto a machine that they have been on before it then copies the bad profile back. This means we are having to go round every machine that they have been on to ensure this doesnt happen. Is there an easier way do this?
  18. Hi, I've coppied scratch.ini to "pragram files\scratch" which works under my name. Under any other user it doesnt work and shows all drives. Any ideas? I've set everyone to read and execute. Thanks
  19. Have loads of space left but would like to hide as it causes a bit of confusion. As we have several sites we have mapped a drive to a folder containing the redirects to each sites local server share. The disk space shows what's on the redirect server and not on the actual server where they are saving so when they save the free space never goes down so they think it hasn't saved properly.
  20. Hi, Is it possible to remove the bars underneath drives that show current drive space? Many thanks
  21. Hi, Just installing WSUS on the second server and trying to link the database to the original but im getting the error Server does not exist or access is denied. In the the servises on the main i cant see MSSQL. Does this mean SQL isnt installed? I havnt installed SQL, does it need to be installed before? Any ideas? Thanks
  22. Hi. Im currently looking at setting up WSUS but am a bit worried about Eset Endpoint causing the system to crash on shutdown when installing the updates meaning a complete reinstall on all computers. With Nod32 we found the only way to update the machines was to disable the antivirus completely and restart otherwise it would crash on shut down. Guess it blocks installs. Any one had issues with the new endpoint and updates? Many thanks.
  23. Thanks all, We have accidently not deleted one or two before and it seemed ok but didnt know if the server logs whats been installed on a computer. Will save me some time. Just need to get WDS sorted now, guessing you can specify a name before it installs and joins.
  24. Hi, Al of our computers are given a name depending on where they are in the building. This name never changes. When we re-image machines we have been deleting them from the AD first and then moving them back into the correct group once completed. Is this necassary? If we dont delete them from the AD and then reinstall and join will all the GPO's including the software installation GPOs be applied again? Many thanks. Dan
  25. Hi, Work is currently asking about any training i would like to complete so ive spotted the Cisco Certified IT Network Training Package provided by careermatch. Cisco Certified IT Network Training Package Has anyone done this? What do you think? Many thanks. Dan
