  1. Thanks for the quick reply. Yep, its a global catalogue and DNS but i have just thought. The workstations will only have the original server in there DNS network settings. Does the login process use DNS only? Could this be the problem? Cant try it out until Wed but would like to go in with hopefully a answer.
  2. Hi, We just installed and promoted a second server to a DC replica using the standard dcpromo. We were hoping that we could take down the original server with everyone still being able to log on but we get the message saying no login servers available when we do. Is this normal without seizing the FsMO roles? Thanks.
  3. Not sure if i have read your question right but it sounds like something we did when first setting up folder redirection inein 7. If you set documents rediction to a folder, e.g. \\server1\docs and try to view that folder it will show asmy documents. If you then go into that folder and look at the address bar you will see the old name.n We solved it by redirecting to a folder inside the users personal are e.g \\server1\docs\mydocs.
  4. Hi. We are just moving profiles to a new server and would like them all to deleted and created again. The problem is without the users profiles on the server the first loging takes 2 minutes. Is it possible to create the profile fairly quicker without the user logging in? Dont want them to have to wait so long. Many thanks.
  5. Yeah, trying to block everything from being copied, printed, and edited if i can.
  6. Hi, We have a excel file containing the schools assets and would like to create a program in visual studio that can read the file and allow searching for a record. We would like to ba able to search with the assett number and then view all data (columns in the xls file) on that asset. I have done a few minor things in VB but its been such a long time now. Does anyone know of a guide or something similar that would help in this? A database would be easier but we cant change it. Many thanks.
  7. Hi. One of my schools has three switches. All covering different parts of the school. Two are gigabyte switches and the other is 100mb. The two GB switches have the ability to disable flow control on individual ports. The 100 switch doesn't have this function. The servers go into one of the 1000 switches. The workstations are then mixed between 100 and 1000 speeds. Should I disable flow control on any of the ports? Many thanks
  8. We've had this happen twice now on just one printer. Did you find a reason for this happening?
  9. Hi, We are based over five sites and each site has a print server to stop traffic going over the WAN. If we installed paper cut on our main server and then installed the secondary server version on the other sites, does it transfer the print job from site A to site B and then site A again or does it just send details on how many pages the user is trying to print? Many thanks, Dan
  10. Hi, At the minute there is no real rules on what ip address should be given to devices so I would like to get one sorted. Has anyone got a document that says what ip address ranges should be used for different devices? Many thanks.
  11. Thanks for you replies, Glennda, do you then just run the cables virtically straight from patch panels to switches? Think this would look brill. Would love to see a pic if you couldget one.
  12. Hi, One of our cabinets was just thrown together before i got here as they took over the network from the council so its not the best looking job but they just didnt have time to sort it. Now its half term i would like to rip it all out and start again but have never done it before so im looking for some tips on how to keep it all tidy. Its only a small cabnet with two panels and one switch but if it goes well i may tackle the others. If you fancy showing your cabinets then feel free. Messy and tidy. Thanks.
  13. Hi, We are looking to go through our shared drives and remove anything that hasnt been accessed in a few years. We would like to be able to search for files that havnt been accessed and then move them to our archive area. We would however like to keep the file in the same directory. e.g. if a file came out of english\ks4 it moves archive\english\ks4. Is there a bit of software to do this? Many thanks, Dan
  14. We have almost the same issue. We can ping IP addresses but not some DNS names. Im wondering if there is a bug in one of the updates as its only just started happening in the last week
  15. Hi, Some of our DNS names arnt being picked up by the server and one or two windows 7 machines also have the same issue. We can use the ip address but not the DNS name. We've tried restatring the service with no luck. Its only started recently so we are wondering if its a bug with one of the new updates. Regards, Dan.
  16. Thanks all. Found the GPO way of setting registry permissions and that sorted it. To change permissions goto: Computer configuration, Windows settings, Security settings, Registry.
  17. Hi, We are trying to remove libraries and favorites from the navigation area in explorer using the registry tweaks however some reg edits dont work. On some we get permission denied error and one doesnt apply at all and gives no error. This is the one that doesnt apply and gives no error. Hive HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Key path CLSID\{323CA680-C24D-4099-B94D-446DD2D7249E}\ShellFolder Value name Attributes Value type REG_DWORD Value data 0xA9400100 (2839544064) Any ideas whats wrong? Many thanks, Dan
  18. Hi, Remembering back to one of the lectures that i had i can remember them saying that one slow device would slow the entire network. So if i had a 10/100 device on a 10/100/1000 network then the whole network would run on 10/100. I believe we were on the the topic of error detection. Is this correct? We have got 10/100 switches and getting speeds on 1.**mbps so im guessing its running at 10mbps. Many thanks. p.s. We also have vlan's going over a 1mb connection.
  19. Some busy people here. Seems like localzuk is just about to start what weve been doing. few interesting issues with server 2k8 and windows 7. Most recent one is that we had to look into removing libraries from the left as it was saving into their profiles slowing login times. Server 2k8 GPO cant controll everything in Windows 7 so a few registry changes have had to be made. GPP seems to work well though. Just dont do a delete all printer preference as it seems to kill log in times. I can recommend Novatech's trolleys. We've just brought one and its brill. Another local school recommended it to us
  20. Hi, So we are just getting the final few problems ironed out of the network and its started to get a little quiet. We've also almost finished getting moodle ready to go. Im now wondering what the next thing to work on could be? What is everyone up to at the moment? Whats the latest thing your working on? Many thanks, Dan.
  21. Hi, Our moodle is almost ready for content and at our latest meeting the idea of buying content was brought up. Things like revision content etc. Apparently the reason the last VLE failed before i started at my school was because of the initial load on staff. Has anyone brought in content? How was it? Many thanks, Dan.
  22. Yeah, but just wanted to what happens . Update: Was a bit boring. The main server realised what had happened and it shows that the backup server is now the rid master. Would we need to transfer the FSMO roles if we dont plan on making changes to the structure and just allow users to log in until the main server comes back online? Max 1 week of this.
  23. Thanks edutech. Just shut down the main server on my test network and managed to seize the FSMO on the backup server. Followed Using Ntdsutil.exe to transfer or seize FSMO roles to a domain controller. It tried to safe tranfer the role but that failed as the main server was not contactable so it just seized the role. Command result shown below. The operation masters screen now shows the rid master as the backup server. Am now going to start the main server up again and see what happens as it still thinks its the master.
  24. Thanks Bio, unfortunately we are out of budget for a few months so looking for a free/cheap solution for now. Tried recovering the c volume from a backup of our main server and booted from it but it gets to loading screen and just crashes and restarts. Probably drivers which I believe there isn't a solution for. Will probably continue with server replication by joining the server to the domain and dc promoting it. Need to look into how to promote it to the main server if the original main server is not repairable.
  25. Just created a little virtual network consisting of two servers. I setup the first and then joined and dcpromo'd the second backup server. i then turned the main server off and created a new user on the backup and could log in with this new account so it seems to talk to both servers. With the main server off however, if i try going into group policy management it says it cannot connect to the server. Is it possible to check if this is replicating? It also looks like DNS is replicated as well. Would this be correct?
