We're only a mainstream school but we have previously had quite a high rate of attrition of portable devices. We're using Lenovo M10 HD tablets in either BobJGear or Otterbox cases and so far we've only lost 2 out 80 purchased to physical damage and 1 replaced under warranty.

We don't encourage Zoom as we have both Teams and Google Meet licensed, but the number of external agencies using it means that banning it outright is a non starter.

My previous schools were gigabit internet via Gigler, and then City Fibre - I've been badgering my contacts at City Fibre about every 6 months to get my new schools connected - no dice so far. My Son's school has now been connected after I stuck my oar in at their governors open meeting pointing out that they could now do gig internet and rent gig dark fibre for less than the cost of their current internet and upgrading their point to point links to gig (they're a 4 school mini-MAT in less than a square mile with one school with 300mb internet and 100mb p2mp between schools ) not sure their IT guy was super happy, but it's cheaper and better!

When I was in secondary, we did the following: Laptops & Tablets: brought to IT helpdesk, mac registered so it could be allowed on the wifi - not by radius, just by mac filtering - and given a meaningful name in DNS, MITM Certificate installed, basic health checks carried out on the device, confirmed the presence of some sort of anti malware. Same filtering level as any other student device. Phones: not allowed on the wifi.

can you snapshot and try an in place upgrade to 19? I've had a similar issue with a 16 print server running Uniflow after a few weeks uptime, certain things (like releasing jobs) just grind to a halt, reboots take ages, windows updates not working, slow to log in - sits preparing windows for far longer than you'd expect for a server with the resources it has... Did an in place upgrade to 19 and touch wood we've had no issues since July.

Wanna be more specific, or are you leaving it for other people? I keep a couple around for emergencies!

That sounds like something your IT provider needs to sort out if they want it. I had a similar thing in reverse - we had an IT provider that we moved on because on because it was taken over by our MAT. I was also new in post, and in the process of due diligence we realised that we'd never had any our cabling certificates for the cabling they'd installed but that it was itemised on the invoices. Turns out they hadn't done it at time of install. A stink was raised by the MAT and a very grumpy pair of installers came to test all the cabling and unpleasant amount of it failed. Further stinks were raised and long story short, they didn't rectify any of it, but they also didn't get the contract get out payment of close to 20k. The incumbent IT person and staff hadn't noticed because devices had failed back to 100mb or even 10mb in some cases and just kept going.

Apologies for sounding cynical here, but I've done this several times at 3 different establishments... And, well, basically the feedback is always the same... 1. We want iPads because oooh shiny 2. Everything is too slow 3. We want you take almost all the security away. 4. We don't know how to use most of what we've got, but we also don't want to attend any training. I'll get back in my box now.
