Nah, I wasn't going to (I did do St Davids, Georges and Patricks Days though) but one of the departments put the US flag up yesterday so gave us the idea and I couldn't resist! If anyone's interested, here're my other ones throughout the year: School wallpapers - Imgur

At BETT this year, I saw a talk from a lady called Charlotte Beckhurst (link to her blog: About | ChicMEEk) who works at Hartsbrook E-ACT Free School. They are doing some really cool things with their pupils using Windows 8 apps and touch-screen monitors, plus things like sky-drive linked cameras/phones. I was really impressed by some of the things shown as well as the videos of the pupils actually using these things properly. Might be worth getting in touch!

Continuing my themed all-school wallpapers for various events throughout the year, the boss suggested I do one for "Independence Day" Seemed a bit of an odd request, but there you go! (It was a good film, mind) http://i.imgur.com/hrKgZoGl.jpg It gave me a giggle and the kids like it (even though I depressingly realised that most of them probably weren't even born when it came out!) so thought I'd share

It's been a while since I used it, but I remember this working really well in the past: Blog: How to use the AppDeploy Repackager | ITNinja (Link to the program is on that page too)

I experimented with this myself last summer. To start with, you'll need to buy a Minecraft licence for each machine. These guys: MinecraftEdu :: Home are re-sellers who give discounted rates to schools etc - they also have some quite cool looking custom versions for education. Next, you'll pretty much need to set up a server - it doesn't need much on it or much overhead - I was going to use a VM with 1GB RAM if I recall correctly. The problem I had was that for the server to work properly, it needs to basically report in to the main Minecraft servers (called the Heartbeat) and it won't run properly without, even if you just want it as a local LAN server*. My problem was that the Minecraft stuff was all blocked by the council and there was zero chance of them unblocking it, so I had to drop the whole idea. (*If this has changed in the meantime, I'm more than happy to be corrected/updated as it would be awesome!) Edit - Just to add, that since this fell through, I've been running a Kodu club instead that all the kids who wanted Minecraft are coming to and they're loving it. It's kind of like Minecraft in that they make their own world, but they can actually edit everything in this and make anything they want pretty much http://www.kodugamelab.com/

I was really looking forward to this, but as a lot of people I'm quite disappointed. Between the massive focus on US-only TV, the not being able to lend a game to your mate thing and this. I'm just crossing my fingers that we'll see some stuff at E3 to fix things. Ninja edit, Ok they've updated the article since last night, sounds like they're still hedging their bets...

Smoothwall block page not working
Valyyn replied to cogrady84's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I had a similar problem when I first started in this job (similar in that the page loaded, but all the pictures on it were blocked). This fixed it for me: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/smoothwall-direct-support/79990-problem-smoothwall-blockpage.html Specifically this post: -
Another one for SAM here. We started using it last summer and it's quite good. It's really handy being able to use the app on your phone/ipod touch to scan things wherever you are too (although I'm waiting for a Windows Mobile app, since I've changed phones!)

I believe they're doing a slow roll-out of V4 at the moment so as to work out the bugs faster and not overwhelm their support guys. With us, Impero called us up and asked if we were free to do the upgrade. We asked them to call back after school, which they did. They then mark your account as being V4 enabled, and on the server you do a check for updates (they were on the phone to us the whole time). It then updates and, after a reboot, we started updating the clients as they checked in automatically. From my experience (happy to be corrected though!), you may as well do your training with v3 anyway, since there's not much difference from a user point of view between 3 and 4 - it's a lot smarter looking with nicer icons and a bit faster but that's it really. The real differences are in the back end for the admins, with things like patch management and much faster log viewing etc.
-
I'll second that - I've put in three suppport tickets through their site in the last month (all very minor niggles after upgrading to V4, just things I wanted to let them know about, really) and every time without fail, I have had someone call the same day with a fix - the last two I actually had a call within fifteen minutes of submitting the ticket! Absolutely can't fault them

Source: What happens when pirates play a game development simulator and then go bankrupt because of piracy? | Greenheart GamesGreenheart Games I don't know about "stealing the entire game" from Kairosoft, I'm sure it helped get the ideas down but not much more than, say Theme Park and Rollercoaster Tycoon! There's a lot more stuff in their game, not to mention that it was all actually coded and made by them, from the graphics up, they didn't actually steal any code or anything from Game Dev Story.

We had that problem, it was actually to do with .net framework 2 and 3 not being turned on by default in Windows 8. See here for turning it back on though: How to enable .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8 in Offline Mode The GUI way kept refusing to work for some reason, so we had to use the offline command at the bottom of that article

Would it let you shift&right-click, then "Run as different user"? http://i.imgur.com/1qTBV7n.png

Robocopy - Will it delete files in destination by default?
Valyyn replied to Mrmichaelhill's topic in Windows Server 2008
It's been a while since I've used it, but I don't think it will delete files that no longer exist in the source unless you use the /PURGE switch. Edit: looking at robocopy /? I think that's right: But maybe test it on a non-important file first, just in case -
Yeah, Microsoft's official line if you don't have a 2012 DC (and I don't know many people that do yet) is to install RSAT on a Windows 8 computer to do it. Hacking the xml is unsupported, but a lot of people have reported success with it: Implementing Internet Explorer 10 GPP with Windows 7 and server 2008 r2

Just to check, are you looking under Group Policy Preferences? As that's where you do all your IE settings for IE now, they did indeed remove the branch from where it used to be: http://i.imgur.com/Sp9a20il.png

We've used these guys for many years now and they're really good on pricing: Asher Design and Print but we do our own designs. They do offer design services, but no idea on costing for those I'm afraid. The other company we nearly used was Yearbooks Direct - the samples they sent us were very good quality but were slightly more expensive. From the look of it, they offer pre-designed books that they basically insert the names and photos etc in to. Hope this helps!

Java tries to bundle the Ask toolbar with it and has it ticked by default. Says it all really, since Oracle took over it!

On the actual login screen, we don't have a huge amount really. We got it set to show a blank frame for the user icon (ideally would like to get rid of the frame entirely, but can't do that ) and a custom background, specifically: http://i.imgur.com/RrnfIdWs.jpg

Ok, I've got some info for you, their email address is [email protected] Their contact phone number is 01844 291039, which I believe is John Binstead, who I think is their secretary. I hope this is of some help! If it's no good, drop me a PM and I'll see if I can get their President's info

Nice one Fiza, thanks for that - will add that to our catalogue, looks handy! Thankfully, starting with Server 2012, you can finally force a gpupdate remotely! http://blogs.technet.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/communityserver-blogs-components-weblogfiles/00-00-00-91-74-metablogapi/7532.122212_5F00_0329_5F00_WindowsServ9.png http://blogs.technet.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/communityserver-blogs-components-weblogfiles/00-00-00-91-74-metablogapi/5282.122212_5F00_0329_5F00_WindowsServ10.png

Don't know if it's of any use, but here we have the notification area hidden for all non-laptop users, which means that they cannot see the sound icon to adjust it anyway. To get round this, we put a shortcut to "C:\Windows\System32\SndVol.exe" on the Start Menu, which opens up the Volume Mixer with volumes etc.

I've had a google for this and I'm not sure it's doable :/ The guys at sevenforums don't think so at least, and they tend to be pretty good: Desktop Icon Resize with Mouse Wheel - Windows 7 Help Forums Edit - That said, if anyone does know a way, then I'd love to know it too

I'd definitely recommend giving the local Lions club a call and seeing if they can help - if you let me know what town (guessing Aylsebury from your profile?), I can get you some contact info. This is pretty much exactly the sort of thing we try to help with

I have much to be proud of (apparently!)
