If it is jus a VM running AD Directory Services/DNS can you jus not rebuild a DC on the old infrastructure and migrate the services? A bit of work but I personally would not be mucking around to much with DCs, but would give you redundancy if you lost a host for any reason.

You can go to the ESXi host cli and type esxtop and ten press the n key, that will tell you what NIC a VM is specifically using. Handy if you have multiple physical NICs on a virtual switch. https://www.vmware.com/pdf/esx2_using_esxtop.pdf

If you could use link aggregation it might be idea to use a couple of pairs. It's always worth running more than what you need in any case, the most expensive part is normally the labour in any cabling job. If one core does get broken you have another few pairs and future proofing. We normally have 4 or 8 pairs installed whenever we run a new cable minimum and sometimes more depending if it is a main comms and planning for diverse routes.

I'd be inclined to run an iPerf test or set up your own speedtest server :-) Never been a fan of Speedtest.net too many adverts.

I have TelTonika RUT955 at home, quite a lot of features and can even be sent reboot commands by TXT. Jus got a data SIM. I jus have 2 routes on my firewall with the metric set so the 4g is backup and the primary VDSL disables it self if it cannot ping specific external IP addresses I did have a DrayTek 4G router but the ports were limited and no vlans etc. Hopefully getting FTTP soon, the order is in and available in my area but I live in a flat so complicated.

My experience with the folder creations certainly for the Home Drive was that as long as you stuck to the standard and did not use hidden folders it was no problem doing in the users AD object i.e. \\[share_Server]\[shared_Folder]\%username% . and could even update multiple AD objects at the same time if needing to move to a new server.

That is the issue with a PSK, especially as some devices make it very easy to either see or share the key. A PSK per device is better but not as good as 802.1x for sure.

+1 for Keystone Jacks not only does it allow replacement of the individual jack rather than the whole panel if one jack goes faulty, it is a lot easier to work with (and if you do muck up the panel you can easily move a keystone) , I used to jus use a marker when pulling cables from the box having more than one box of cable when running more than one cable is very handy :-) Cat6a you should not use cable ties otherwise you can compromise the CAT6A standard. And yep using pass/though plugs is a lot easier :-) I used to do quite a bit 10 years ago, I'm glad I don't need to do it anymore, hot attics, drilling walls, crawling under raised flooring, dealing with ceiling tiles, sitting awkwardly doing 30+ wall outlets, etc.

Delegated access rather than GPO I'd of thought. Create AD group then base delegation on that. Don't make it Domain Admin, use restricted groups on Domain PCs, etc.

If you have 2 DHCP servers on the same vlan they will likely clash, jus the way DHCP works. PC sends out DHCP discover > Server sends out offer > PC sends request > Server sends acknowledgment. Personally you should not be having any clients on vlan 1 and the client vlan should be tagged all the way through on uplinks. Creating a sub interface for vlan on the smoothwall and implementing DHCP server only on that sub interface even without knowing Smoothwall sounds like the ticket. You defo do not want 2 dhcp servers on the same vlan.

Unless you run a captive portal on the Unifi controller I don't think it matters if it is not available (at least that used to be the case), it is not like other wifi solutions where the APs become paper weights without the controller/s.

Although about 7 years back and on Windows 7 we had all the printers on GPO with loopback processing. It was faultless, we even set it up for enrolment and had the printer networked on each desk which was 100 times better than the previous years where it was plugged into one PC on a table and shared to the other PCs. Literally used to create a OU in AD with a GPO for each table (about 20 tables). Put the PC in the OU for the table and it jus worked, no more urgent call outs during enrolment because someone had knocked the power off on a PC sharing the printer or had not switched that PC on :-)

You can force VMWare to make the VM go into boot menu at next power on, then jus get it to boot via PXE. If the VM is on a different network to your WDS/MDT boot server you might need a helper on that network pointing to the WDS server or whatever you use to boot the PCs from the network.

Personally I'd be careful about recommending any cloud storage based CCTV :-) I'd be inclined to ask why it has to be cloud based storage though.

Had a Golf eTSI DSG as a loan car from garage. Noticed it had off marked on the plus paddle, yep it switches back to auto from temp manual mode. Tried it in my 2019 Seat Leon Cupra DSG and although it does not have off on the paddle the feature still works. No more needing to move the gear selector from Drive to Sport mode to quickly get back into auto if was in auto before using the paddles :-) I've only had the car 4 years and jus noticed that feature, lol.

Set up a user in AD using the MAC address for the username and password, I seem to remember that working but have only done it the once years back.

INMO Its best to put it on a VM to build because you can keep it very near driver free or even totally driver free. We had 2 mages at the last place and we installed all the software on the images using task sequences. It meant we could easily rebuild a PC in lunchtime break and do a class of 25 PCs in 30-40mins with no additional software or minimal updates needed. Getting the software installed was sometimes a PITA as needed to get somethings installed before another but we had minimal changes each year so normally 2-3 attempts and it installed all software without fail.

Teams if normally working (both onsite and WFH), my personal number is known by a few key people but it is never taken advantage of.

Used to have to enable LLDP in the CLI on old Unifi APs but not sure if that is true these days. It would be the first thing I'd look at though.

I'm trying to get Zigbee2mqtt working but as I have a VM on Synology which has a Docker containerized HomeAssistant I think it is going to be a big hassle to get it to work with USB Zigbee and Bluetooth dongles. I have a few docker hosts so I'm thinking of moving it over to get more flexibility. The thing I liked about the VM was it's ease of portability and backup potential whilst in a VM especially as I've invested a lot of time getting HA setup to where it is now.

The intergration with Unifi is comprehensive in HA but personally I'm not keen (Unifi Video debacle) , with Unifi you can change record mode, sometimes use the motion detection, etc. Really the only reason I like Unifi Protect is for the notifications but you seemingly need to allow cloud access for that to work which I'm not happy about (this is using a Cloud Key Gen 2 plus). The Cloud key with the battery is trouble some, mine has given up working on PoE and the battery swelled so I removed the battery and powering it via it's USB connection. I have an Amcrest PoE Pan Tilt camera which I've managed to get HA changing the preset which saves me using 2 cameras for my requirement but it seems to depends on the model what features can be adjusted with HA. The Amcrest had to be added by the configuration YAML as no GUI integration that I could find. Below is an example of the entities HA picks up from my Unifi Flex camera, there is more in the list than shown.

I have my HomeAssistant on the same subnet as all my smart stuff. There are a lot of integrations these days, I started setting up Alexa but I've since binned or given away all the Alexa devices in the hope to find a truly self hosted system reliant on the least amount of cloud services. Home Automation Guy Smart Home Junkie Everything Smart Home I'd also suggest setting up a specific account for things like Google, Amazon, etc and not using your main account. For instance I have Gmail calendar shared from my main account to a dedicated account and that is what HomeAssistant connects to for updates to it's local calendar, then using those calendar events to trigger automations. Starting down the Zigbee route now but looks like I need to move away from a docker instance of HomeAssistant running on a VM in Synology.
