Don't get me started on Windows 8/2012 🙄 I know why they did it was to create a uniform experience between Windows Mobile/Tablets but really. Everytime I have to go on on a Windows 2012 server I cringe.

Yep defo a consideration. I only ever got into MAC because a school I worked at they wanted to use MACs for Video but.....???? Back then the only other thing they used was Windows Movie Maker which was a car crash.

Jus gone bac to MAC at home, I tried Linux for about a year then went back to Windows 10. I haven't bought myself a new PC in absolute years, probably in the 90's and jus bought 2nd hand and installed my own OS (too much bloatware) but now it seems Windows is jus as much bloated with loads of crud I don't want. As I do mostly creative work at home the MAC suited me and I'm well happy with it. Work we are still running W10 but I don't deal with that side jus the network side, thankfully 🙂

The printing topic has gone on for years. In 2009 a secondary school we had tons of desktop printers and a whole repro graphic department at that school but people would still send pages of prints to their desktop printers. In one admin room there was an MFD, each of 3 staff members had a desktop printer on their desk and the room was no bigger than 5m square. The users desktop printers were requiring replacement toners at least once every 3 months. No backup from SLT to remove the desktop printers.

Personally I would not backup to anything but an encrypted location with Synology Active Backup you can do this. Personally I use an S3 bucket for my home network. But obviously you need to check if this is GDPR compliant etc. as storing others personal info and financial info.

Another vote for Dell. The driver download site for HP is painful.

Use a priveledged account not the normal user account. Account Delegation is the best option rather than using Domain Admin.

AB tutor can defo have a impact. Teacher bans student from Internet, next teacher comes in and does not realise. I did see this in a previous employment but way back in 2009/10

I wouldn't and I don't think you can. You really want iLO on it's own network as it gives console access to the server. Jus get an extra NIC card, you could use the existing LAN NIC and use a port on the extra NIC and should be able to team them.

There is a way using a sysinternal tool (cannot remember off top of my head the name of it). First find out what DC they are getting locked out on then search the logs for the IP. UPDATE: Oh yeah saw the OP tried this. Does the computer name not tie in with anything you recognise? Typical causes are password changed but a device still connecting using the old credential (i.e. mobile device, desktop). At a previous employment we stopped using lock on PCs and forced all desktops to restart nightly which solved a lot of this for us. People would leave them selves logged in to a PC, lock it and walk off then change their password. If you use Office 365 or Google maybe check logs for the user account to make sure someone is not trying to access their account.

Personally I'd like to kick that globe icon off the f****** Globe. The old icons were much more informative i.e. exclamation mark or red cross. And it seems these days with each new version Windows puts one more click between the user and the actual information they want to troubleshoot issues or get basic information unless you know the cli command or can search in the search box i.e. compmgmt.msc or diskmgmt.msc .

A DP can even run on a suitable desktop, does not need to be a server. It would save the bandwidth across the link. Does not matter if you are not a school the process is no different :-) The other option as you say is to limit the clients down so it does not effect the network as a whole.

I know you can do it with SCCM but have you thought about a distribution point at each site rather than each client talking cross the link. Sorry if miss-understood your question. We had similar issues and put a DP on subnets with large number of clients as the performance hit on our firewall was drastic, our server is separated from the clients by the firewall.

Some manufacturers use a proprietary PSU and the PWR for the SATA drives comes off the motherboard. In the BIOS you should be able to select the boot drive alternatively if there is a boot menu option when the PC goes through its BIOS you might be able to select the correct drive in there.

I'd look at Veeam free version, leaps and bounds ahead of Windows backup INMO.

Home Assistant is a great call and has come on in leaps and bounds. Automate heat depending on room presence. Automate lights based on time and what activity is in the room, etc. Switch off and monitor smart plugs. Using Zigbee you have no need for an app to setup the device to WiFi which can be a royal PITA, jus make sure the Zigbee bridge is in join mode and press the button on the Zigbee device. Also Zigbee can use non-battery powered Zigbee devices to provide a mesh network.

If you currently run CC then consider what you use it for. If you don't use CC at all then defo why bother :-) First EDU job I had they used CC2.5 and CC3. We moved to vanilla windows AD and never really looked back. Flash back of issues with RM EasyMail and subsequent migration to Live@EDU. The 2U application server with a Celeron inside sticker was the talking point of the IT team, lol. CC had it's uses back then :-)

Got a query that I cannot seem to answer. Scenario, want to replace my 2 home firewalls that are HA Active/Passive. The firewalls I have disable all ports apart from management and HA on the passive device. Looking at 2 UDM Pros in HA Shadow mode to repalce them as trying to get updates for my current firewalls is a PITA. Soon will be moving to FTTP so would like to have the UDMs at the perimeter once I remove the DrayTek vDSL. My main concern is it I have switches directly plugged into the UDM via any of the LAN ports will I encounter loops? I don't want to really wnat to have a core switch and route vlans on the core although I have a few MicroTiks kicking around. I run MSTP on the switches. I'm not sure if the UDMs can use MSTP. I'm reasonably happy with the switches I have at the moment. Going with the UDMs since they now can work by Zones which I prefer and will be less of a headache dealing with interface based rules. I have an extensive home network, I guess been my hobby as well as fulltime job but it keeps me off the streets and gives me a good lab to play with. I don't run AD anymore at home though, lol mainly IoT/Smarthome projects, NAS for video work, etc.

I have seen a issue with SMB before caused by a switch fault. Worth looking at as a quick fix/test and switch to a known working port.

I'd look at VSX rather than VSF for core, VSX is more suitable for core layer if using Aruba CX. Once you get started it becomes relatively easy. You will likely need to create a route from the next hop i.e. firewall to the core for the subnets that terminate on the core. @FN-GM says about using firewall vs ACLs. Firewall rules are generally easier to configure, I'd certainly consider routing Guests, WiFi and maybe even servers at the firewall level rather than heavily using ACLs. As soon as you enable routing on a switch it will most likely allow traffic unless you ACL.
