Use 'RegShot' to see which registry key is being changed. Take a backup of the c:\documents and setting\default user folder The use the load hive function in regedit to load the ntuser.dat in c:\documents and settings\default user (this is a hidden folder). You'll be asked to give this hive a name call it anything you like (Percy is a nice name). Apply the same registry settings to the default user hive (not the .default hive, the that might be called Percy). Then unload the hive. If you're using mandatory profiles make the changes to the mandatory profile instead (if you're doing this post back, there are a few snags). If you're using roaming profiles your best option is to make an ADM (which I've never got the hang of) or use the REG WRITE command in one of your logon scripts.

We're probably the last school in the history of the world to make the leap to DHCP (no giggling at the back, there was a good reason for it). Anyway I used to use Angry IP Scanner to check various machines were switched on. This was easy because our IT suites had predictable sequential IP addresses. I think you'd be better off using virtualisation. Have you thought about what will happen when the kids start putting the hard drives back in the wrong computers, if they're not all identical (or running OEM XP with activation) it could be a nightmare.

VMware server lets you stop and start VMs from the command line (so it would be easy to call it with a script). It might be possible to cook up something that lets them start up the VM and then access it via remote desktop. The only thing is VMware server doesn't have any shared drives support (although you could do this via remote desktop).

I've had similar issues. I don't think gigabit fibre can step down to 100mb in the same way copper does.
