Which version, I was always under the impression that Smartboard Software (pre version 10) could be used on any computer as long as it wasn't attached to a competitor's whiteboard. It's freely available from their web site.

Most schools have already moved away from the two networks model. VLANs doesn't sound like the right way of going about it. VLANs let you keep networks separate even if they share network hardware. Are the two networks physicaly connected and are they using the same IP range?

I was about to point out how Capita had financialy supported the Labour party. But erm.... Rats, sinking ship, biting the hand that feeds you, yadda yadda yadda. In a sane world it would probably make sense for the government to produce a school management software package (or procure it centrally). All schools need to produce the same returns and hold the same information after all, and this is set down by government. But since every time our government commission an IT projector it goes £47bn over budget and then doesn't solve any of the problems it's meant to, it's probably best leaving capita to it.

Someone I went to school with went down for armed robbery about a year after we finished school. Although he covered his face he was a regular in the shop and had been in there wearing the same clothes about an hour earlier.

As people have said above, it should be fine, just be careful. We've had this a few times. Including once incident where I over heard a teacher in the staff room telling another teacher her projector had gone bang and she wasn't sure who she should tell about. The second teacher being the one who mostly used the room. EDIT: I've just googled your projector. I wouldn't bother putting a new bulb in something that old, especially if you can find a replacement with the same throw.

Try to run your quotes through more then one supplier. We've found suppliers often bend over backwards to get new business and then become less generous. We bought two servers and a SAN, our main supplier was over £2k off, so we went elsewhere. Oddly enough he's now trying much harder for our business. However, we have issues with the company who supplied the kit in the end. The equipment came in dribs and drabs, and they not only invoiced before it all arrived, they contacted us asking why the invoice hadn't been paid. To compound this they ignored many emails.

Two ancient servers are going, being replaced with two new servers, a SAN and some ESX. This will include a new rack for the Server room and a lot of tidying up. We're also adding in Exchange to the above. VLANing our network (we share a broadcast domain with another school at the moment so can't use DHCP ). 10 classroom PCs and some admin/office PCs. We've already done two ICT suites.

We turned our library into an ICT suite. But we'd built a new library first. The new library has 8 PCs, it is still predominantly a space for books.
