Hello! I've never been away in Jan before but one of the guys at work is off to Egypt and says it will be hot! I'm thinking about taking the missus as part of her Xmas present but wondered if any of you have been anywhere nice in Jan before??? I only want to go for a week and i'd like all inclusive if possible. I don't really fancy Egypt, heard too many bad things about getting ill Any thoughts??? Thanks

Hi there, I'd recommend the Huawei Symantec 2600 with 12 x 300 or 450 GB SAS drives You would need to replace your primary unit with this and use veeam or double take to replicate data from his remaining EONstor unit You could go with two units and use the Huawei Symantec replication software If you need more info on Huawei Symantec (i know they're not well known as yet) let me know. Price to you would be circa 12k and will depend on level of support required Also, if you want me to quote on other solutions that you have found, just say. Hope this helps

If Virtual servers and Virtual Desktop aren’t important to you in the next 3 or 4 years, then what you describe would do the job but it's what i would recommend as it really good value for money. Obviously it depends on budgets etc

Hi, One of the best solutions for what you describe would be the SGI (silicon graphics) Origin 400 system It’s a blade centre (made by Intel) with an integrated dual controller SAN, integrated dual switch Ethernet and dual PSUs etc. Like a datacentre in a can All fully redundant and all managed through a single GUI It supports 6 blades in total, all of which can support up to two 6 core CPUs, 96GB RAM So as much performance as you will need in almost all scenarios at the SME. You get a 7.2TB SAS based SAN, which is virtualised so you just creat pools of RAID 5, 6, 10 etc and present virtual disks to the hosts in the chassis This means that you can fail a blade over without worrying about where the data sits as all blades have access to the same virtual storage pool (kind of like VMotion in VMWare but without the need for VMWare) Circa 20k for 3 blades running 16GB RAM and dual quad core Xeons each 7.2TBs dual controller SAN 2 x 10 port GigE switch blades Dual PSUs 3yrs support Install takes about 30 minutes Fully stacked this solution will scale to support a massive workload Its used often for VM and VDI and certified with all the common app vendors. Hi, My suggestion here would be to use ISCSI but still directly connect it to the storage sever for the time being. When you are ready you can replace your core switch and VLAN the ISCSI traffic off to give a dedicated Storage broadcast domain LAN This will give you the same sort of dedicated fabric that you would get with FC (albeit not as fast) You are unlikely to need FC below a user count of 500 seats I’ve seen 2000 seat implementations of ISCSI work very well. However, having said that you could buy an Array which supports both FC and ISCSI on the controllers In a joint venture between Huawei (27Bn dollar Chinese telco provider) and Symantec, they make one (2600) which has twice the number of front end ports you would normally find on a small SAN (4 FC and 4 GbE per controller) it also has a SAS backplane which is faster than the standard 4Gbps FC loops you normally get. Its supports snapshots / replication, mixed disk (SAS and SATA) and is VERY cost effective. If you bought a similar array from EMC or Ntap it would cost you 50k You can have 20TBs RAW with dual controllers and 3yrs support for sub 16k with the 2600 We use several of these in our private cloud to run our VMs and they’re superb It’s an entry level Enterprise SAN array, which will scale to 96 drives and can support both file (SATA) and transactional (SAS) workloads concurrently. The overland array like similar Netgear or Q is really just an expensive SOHO product, Its not something you would ideally want to rely on as a core foundation to critical systems in a corporate office environment
